1 Speech and Language Centre Spelling, Bradshaw Hall Primary School Children in the centre are taught spelling rules appropriate to their level of literacy, not necessarily to their year group. These include: List 1 List 2 List 3 List 4 List 5 List 6 List 7 List 8 Wordlists 1-6 /Spelling Rules Vowel digraphs and trigraphs: ay oy oi ee a-e Vowel digraphs and trigraphs: oo oa oe ou The sounds /f/, /l/, /s/, /z/ and /k/ spelt ff, ll, ss, zz and ck The /ŋ/ sound spelt n before k Vowel digraphs and trigraphs: ar ir ur ow ue ew Vowel digraphs and trigraphs: or ore aw air ear are Vowel digraphs and trigraphs: ai i-e o-e u-e ie igh -tch The /v/ sound at the end of words Adding s and es to words (plural of nouns and the third person singular of verbs) Adding the endings ing, ed and er to verbs where no change is needed to the root word New consonant spelling: wh Words ending y (/i:/ or /ɪ/) The /d_ʒ/ sound spelt as ge and dge at the end of words, and sometimes spelt as g elsewhere in words before e, i and y The /s/ sound spelt c before e, i and y The /n/ sound spelt kn and (less often) gn at the beginning of words The /a_ɪ/ sound spelt y at the end of words Adding es to nouns and verbs ending in y Adding ed, ing, er and est to a root word ending in y with a consonant before it. 2 Below are the wordlists that relate to the spelling objectives in the Speech and Language Centre, however these are only taught to children when it is appropriate to do so. These words are used to teach the spelling pattern; it is not intended to be a list of words for children to memorise. We teach spellings during a discrete spelling session, through letters and sounds and the common exception words are taught in our multisensory reading and writing Words First programme.
