1 Vancouver Occupational Therapy For Kids, Ltd. Presents DIR / Floortime Approach Workshop Greenspan & Wieder s Comprehensive Model of Treatment for Children with Challenges in Relating & Communicating, including Autism Spectrum Disorder. with Rosemary White OTR/L-Profectum Faculty & ICDL PhD Faculty Vancouver, BC November 18th-19th, 2012

2 DIR /Floortime is the developmental relationship based approach to treatment developed by the late Stanley Greenspan, MD and Serena Wieder, PhD. It is a comprehensive treatment model that supports parent child interactions with the focus on relationships, as relationships are the vehicle for learning. The goal of a Floortime program is to develop a continuous flow of interaction with a child throughout their day. Initially, this is developed in the focused interactions of the Floortime sessions but then expands to all the incidental interactions that continually occur throughout the day. This conference will go into the depth of the DIR /Floortime model. This includes the D which are the six core capacities of Functional Emotional Development, the I which are the individual differences of the child, and the R which are relationships that are the vehicle for creating learning interactions. Understanding a child s individual differences, including their physiological and emotional regulation as well as visual spatial, auditory/language and motor abilities, is essential for all who work with children on interactions and learning. Extensive use of video clips of case illustrations will be used in this workshop to highlight assessment and treatment. Video clips will include coaching of parents in implementing DIR /Floortime at home, as well as individual treatment sessions and group interactions. In addition video clips will show treatment of children over the course of a number of years highlighting the progress in the child s attention, engagement, social interaction and their ability to develop ideas, build their play with a logical flow and develop reasoning and abstract thinking. Participants will: Understand the many facets of the DIR Model and be informed of it as an effective treatment approach that can be used with children with disorders in communicating and relating including children diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Understand and be able to identify the areas of an individual s unique profile that may affect their ability to relate and communicate. This includes the sensory modulation continuum of sensory registration and response to stimuli and how it influences behavior, attention, impulse control, intent to act, motor planning and sequencing, action, auditory/verbal processing and visual processing. Identify how these unique individual differences influence a child s interaction with people and objects, as well as how we can tailor our interactions to support the development of the child s ideas and then for them to make the link between ideas and abstract thought. Recognize the power of affect to increase the child s attention to task and to enhance the dance of social interaction with a child.

3 Recognize that affect has to be tailored to the individual child to support their engagement, for example, when and how to use sensory and physical activity to engage the child and when and how to use language to engage the child, and help them problem solve and elaborate ideas. Who should attend: This conference is for both professionals and parents. Professionals include: pediatricians, nurses, occupational and physiotherapists, speech and language pathologists, mental health professionals, early childhood and school age educators, behavior specialists, program administrators and related health care. Rosemary White, OTR Rosemary has been an Occupational Therapist since 1972 and brings a wealth of clinical experience to every workshop she teaches throughout the United States and internationally in Canada, UK, Netherlands, Greece, Turkey, South Africa, Uganda and Australia.
