1 How to Borrow Library Books on the Nook Touch with your PC What you will need 1. Westlake Porter Public Library card number (located on the back of your library card, starts with PPPL, a total of 14 characters; card should be in good standing) 2. Internet connection 3. address What you will get as you go through the process: 1. Adobe Digital Editions (this is software you ll be downloading) 2. Adobe ID

2 Getting an Adobe ID 1. Open your web browser on your PC 2. Go to 3. Click on Sign In (located on the right most corner of the page) 4. Click on Create an Adobe Account 5. Fill in the boxes (only fill in the fields with asterisks) 6. Under Communication Preferences, UNCHECK , mail and telephone 7. Scroll down and click Continue 8. The next screen should say Thank you for becoming a member of the Adobe community. You now have an Adobe ID! Go to step 10 to sign out. 9. If you get the message: This is already in use. Please try a different you may have already applied for an Adobe ID in the past. Try to sign in with that and the corresponding password. click on Sign In again (located on the right most corner of the page) under Returning members Sign In, sign in with your and password click on Did you forget your Adobe ID or Did you forget your password if you have forgotten either or both. You will be prompted to fill in your , after which you will either be given a password hint or sent an to create a new password Once you ve reset your password, go ahead and Sign Out 10. To sign out, go back to the right most corner of the page where Sign In was. It should now read Welcome, your name 11. A drop down menu will appear. Click on Sign Out

3 Downloading Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) and Authorizing your Computer 1. Go to overdrive.westlakelibrary.org 2. On the right hand side, under Digital Software, click on Adobe Digital Editions 3. Click on the box that says Get Adobe Digital Editions 4. On the right hand side, under Next Steps, click on Download Now 5. Under Adobe Digital Editions Installer, click on Install 6. Click on Install when the Adobe Digital Editions Installer appears 7. Click YES on the next box 8. The Adobe Digital Editions Setup Box will open. Click Next 9. If you want to change the destination folder, click browse and choose the new location. Otherwise, click Install 10. Installation will begin. Click Close once the process is completed 11. Click I Agree on the license agreement box 12. ADE will open (it s a box with a black background divided into 2 panels) 13. The Setup Assistant will open. Click Continue 14. Choose the Authorize Computer Option 15. Type in your Adobe ID and password 16. Click Activate 17. Click Finished 18. Close ADE

4 Authorizing your Nook Touch 1. Power on your Nook Touch 2. Slide the arrow (called the unlock icon) to the right to wake up your Nook Touch 3. Connect your Nook Touch to your PC using the USB cable that it came with 4. A box will appear on your Nook indicating that your Nook is now on USB mode 5. Go to your PC desktop 6. A box will appear with the words MyNOOKTouch (E:) and below it, a list of options (e.g. open folder to view files, etc). Close this box 7. Go to your desktop and open ADE. -- If you cannot find ADE on your desktop, click on the Windows button on the lower left corner of your screen. In the search box, type Adobe Digital Editions. Drag the ADE icon to your desktop 8. On your PC, you will see the Device Setup Assistant 9. Click Authorize Device 10. Click Finished 11. You should see the Nook icon appear on the left hand panel of ADE under Bookshelves. If you do not see the Nook icon on the left hand panel of ADE, close ADE, wait a few minutes and then re-open.

5 Browsing/Searching for Adobe EPUB ebooks 1. Keep your Nook Touch connected to your PC 2. Open your web browser 3. Go to 4. On the right hand side, under Digital Collections, click on Downloadables 5. Click on the Overdrive Logo (blue box with pictures of people) 6. Our Digital Media page will open 7. SEARCHING: If you know the title of the book you are looking for: -- Type the title of the book in the box under Quick Search, located on the right hand side of the page -- Then click Go -- A list of ebooks and audiobooks will be shown -- Choose the Adobe EPUB ebook format of the book you are looking for. DO NOT CHOOSE ANY OTHER FORMAT or else you won t be able to read your book -- If you do not see the book on the list, we do not own that book currently 8. BROWSING: If you d like to browse, you can do it two ways: BROAD SEARCH: this will list all the Adobe EPUB ebook titles we own (this includes titles that are checked out and titles available to borrow right now) 1. Click on Advanced Search (located under Quick Search, right below the Search box) 2. Click on the drop down menu under All formats (located directly across the word Format) 3. Choose Adobe EPUB ebook 4. Click on Search 5. Titles are sorted according to the Date they were Added to the library s collection. You have the option of sorting them by clicking the tabs for Title, Creator, Release Date, Most Popular, Date Added to Site (these tabs are located right above the first item on the list) FOCUSED SEARCH: this will list Adobe EPUB ebook titles available to borrow right now 1. Click on Advanced Search (located under Quick Search, right below the Search box) 2. Click on the drop down menu under All formats (located directly across the word Format) 3. Choose Adobe EPUB ebook 4. Then click the box next to Only show titles with copies available 5. Click Search

6 Placing Holds 1. If the book you d like to borrow is currently checked out on our Digital Media site (overdrive.westlakelibrary.org), you will see the Place a Hold button, instead of Add to ebookbag 2. Click on the Place a Hold next to the Adobe EPUB ebook format 3. type in your library card number (if you haven t already) and click on Sign In 4. You will be prompted to type in your address twice 5. Click Place a Hold 6. You will receive an when the selected title becomes available for checkout 7. You will have 3 days to check out the selected title, once you receive the

7 Checking Out 1. Once you ve found a book, you ll see below the title, two or three formats available (Kindle Book, Adobe EPUB ebook, Adobe PDF ebook) 2. Click on "Add to ebookbag" located ON THE RIGHT of the Adobe EPUB ebook icon. DO NOT CHOOSE ANY OTHER FORMAT EXCEPT FOR ADOBE EPUB EBOOK 3. Click on "Proceed to checkout" 4. Type in your library card number (starts with pppl and is 14 characters long, no spaces, no need to capitalize) 5. Click on "Sign In" 6. Click on "Confirm Checkout" 7. Click on "Download" 8. Choose Open with Adobe Digital Editions (default) and click OK 9. Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) will open and will start downloading your ebook 10. Your ebook will open in Readers View. The title page of the ebook will be displayed. 11. Click on the Library View icon on the upper left corner of the screen (it looks like an upright stack of books). This view makes it easier to download the ebook to your Nook. 12. Click on the Thumbnail View icon on the upper right corner of the screen (it looks like four squares and is located to the right of the words All Items ) 13. Place your cursor over the cover of the ebook 14. Click and hold, slowly dragging the ebook to the Nook icon on the left hand panel of ADE. As you drag the ebook, you will see a red X sign. 15. That red X sign will turn into a green plus sign once you ve dragged the ebook over the Nook icon. 16. Release the mouse as soon as the green plus sign appears 17. The ebook will start downloading to your Nook 18. Close ADE after the download has finished

8 How to Safely Remove Your Nook Touch 1. Once you ve download your ebook to your Nook, you MUST safely remove your device from the computer. Doing this will prevent loss or corruption of data 2. From your desktop, go to the lower left corner of the screen and click on the Windows Button (click Start for XP users) 3. Go to Computer (My Computer for XP users) 4. Place your cursor over the Nook icon and right click 5. Click on Safely Remove 6. This message will appear on the bottom portion of the screen: The USB Mass Storage Device can now be safely removed from the computer 7. Unplug your Nook from your PC How to find your Adobe EPUB ebook on your Nook Touch: 1. Press the n on the bottom of your Nook Touch (this is your Home button) 2. Slide the unlock icon to the right 3. Tap the n again. The Navigation Bar will pop up 4. Tap Library 5. Tap the drop down arrow next to the word All (located on the upper right side of the screen below the word Library ) 6. Tap My Files 7. Tap Digital Editions 8. Your library ebook should appear on that page under the ebook title 9. Tap the ebook cover 10. You should see the front cover of the book on your screen 11. Tap the right side of the screen to turn the page forward 12. Tap the left side of the screen to turn the page backward 13. Tap the upper right corner of the screen to bookmark the page 14. To highlight, add notes and look up the definition of a word, put your finger on the word and hold it there until a menu appears. Tap the icon you d like to use. 15. Tap the middle of the screen and a new menu bar will open at the bottom of the screen with the following options: Tap Content to access the Table of Contents, your Notes and Highlights and your Bookmarks Tap Find to look for a word or phrase within the book Tap Aa to change the font type, the font size and the background Tap Brightness to change the brightness of the screen Tap Go To to toggle back and forth between the book s pages

9 How to return/delete Adobe EPUB ebooks on your Nook Touch 1. Connect your Nook to your PC 2. A box will appear with the words MyNOOKTouch (E:) and below it, a list of options (e.g. open folder to view files, etc). Close this box 3. Open Adobe Digital Editions 4. Click on the Nook icon located on the left hand panel of ADE 5. All library ebooks currently residing in your Nook will appear on the right hand panel 6. With your mouse, hover over the cover of the ebook you want to return or delete 7. Click on the faint triangle that appears on the upper left corner of the ebook 8. A drop down menu will appear: If you want to delete the ebook from your book without returning it, click on Delete. The ebook will be deleted from your Nook but the book will remain in your library account until it expires, after which it will be automatically returned. If you want to return the ebook, click on Return Borrowed Item. This removes the item from your library account and your Nook Touch. A copy of the file may still appear in your ADE but it cannot be opened. Go ahead and click on the faint triangle to delete this file. Using the Return Borrowed item option is especially handy when you want to return a book before the due date 9. Close ADE 10. Safely Remove your Nook as listed in the procedure above

10 How to Re-Download your Adobe EPUB ebook If you accidentally deleted a book from ADE, you can download this book again as long as you haven t returned it yet and the book hasn t expired 1. Connect your Nook Touch to your PC 2. Slide the unlock icon to the right 3. A box will appear with the words MyNOOKTouch (E:) and below it, a list of options (e.g. open folder to view files, etc). Close this box 4. Open your web browser 5. Go to overdrive.westlakelibrary.org 6. Click on My Account, located on the series of tabs located below the Westlake Porter Public Library Logo 7. Enter your library card number then click Sign In 8. Click on My Checkouts 9. Look for the book you want to re-download and click on Download 10. ADE will open 11. Follow the checkout procedures as listed above Currently, there is NO RENEW OPTION on Overdrive. In order to borrow your Adobe EPUB ebook again, you will have to go through the BORROWING PROCESS as outlined above.
