2 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 24, 2008 Dear Parishioners, As you are relaxing and vacationing during these last weeks of summer, please consider what you can do to help our parish in two areas. First, we have a great need for Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers especially at the Saturday 5:00 pm and 9:00 am Masses. At present there are only four lectors assigned to the 5:00 pm Mass and one of them is also assigned to the 9:00 am Mass. Could you give the gift of service to our community? Training and support are offered in abundance! Second, our Finance Advisory Council is working to manage our budget for the next fiscal year. They have noted that plate collections are down during the summer months. However, our parish operating expenses continue. Please consider making your weekly donation for the time you will be gone, before or after your trip. There are many more opportunities to serve our Parish. The list of parish ministries is printed in the bulletin each week. Serving others is a faith filled way of answering Jesus question, Who do you say that I am? Together we are Church! Peace, Kathy Did you know that? In the four gospels the word church occurs only twice, and both instances are in Matthew s Gospel. (16:18, 18:17) However, in the rest of the New Testament church occurs 112 times. This suggests that church is a post resurrection reality and most likely not a concern of Jesus during his earthly ministry. (Living Liturgy) READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Thes 1:1-5, 11-12; Mt 23:13-22 Tuesday: 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17; Mt 23:23-26 Wednesday: 2 Thes 3:6-10, 16-18; Mt 23:27-32 Thursday: 1 Cor 1:1-9; Mt 24:42-51 Friday: 1 Cor 1:17-25; Mk 6:17-29 Saturday: 1 Cor 1:26-31; Mt 25:14-30 Sunday: Jer 20:7-9; Ps 63; Rom 12:1-2; Mt 16:21-27 Please continue to pray for the sick in our Parish Community and their families, and especially for Sharon Bertolero, John Brey, Wendell Dunworth, Valerie Filipp, Paul Flaherty, Julian Goslinski, Dottie Hooven, Dwayne Howze, Robert Hurley, Sophia Lipinski, Andrew Lipinski, Cathie Lutticken, Lea Marlowe, John Martinez, Betty McKay, Kathy Panec, Sharon Pfann, Katie Shur, Laura Toby, David Troidl Budget Goal for Plate Collections is $8, Collections for weekend of: August 16/17: $4, Holy Day Collection: $1, THANK YOU! 4 Sun Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri 08/29 PEACE AND JUSTICE Corner EXTREME HUNGER AND THE COMMON GOOD: Our Catholic social concerns prompt us to work to change policies that aggravate world hunger. Trade policies, crop subsidies and edible corn for ethanol all contribute to a world shortage of food. Bread for the World and Catholic Relief Services are two organizations working to improve food availability in hungry regions. Donations to Project Peanut Butter provide mothers of starving children a nonperishable complete food to give their children. More information on supporting these organizations is on the Peace and Justice table. Did you know that learning with a group of nearby Christians could strengthen your faith and understanding of world concerns? JustFaith groups are forming locally to understand about poverty and peace and the common good. Please consider joining and meeting others with like concerns. For information call Liz Lilly at or Sylvia Villasenor at Young Adult Mass As summer winds down, celebrate the Eucharist with this month s celebrant, Fr. Diarmuid Casey of St. Athanasius on Tuesday, 8/26, 7:30 PM, The Intersection Chapel, St. Nicholas School,12816 S. El Monte Ave, Los Altos Hills. Meet young adults (20 s to early 40 s, single or married) from this and other nearby parishes. A map to the Intersection is posted on the front page of our website, Contact Larry, hudat@stanfordalumni.org THIS WEEK AT ST. Are you, or someone you know, interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? Do you know someone who has not yet completed the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation? The process for this is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA. A new RCIA session will begin in September. Pastoral Associate Kathy Schlosser will be happy to meet with anyone interested in this process. Please call the Parish Office at Spiritual Exercises The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola have helped many to fulfill their desire to grow in knowledge and love of Jesus and so to follow him in greater freedom. The complete Exercises (sometimes offered as a 30-day silent retreat) can be offered as a retreat in everyday life, extended over six months or more. In following this form, the retreatant meets with an individual director weekly and prays an hour and a half daily. Doing the Exercises entails a serious commitment of both time and energy and is appropriate for those already cultivating a generous life of prayer and in regular spiritual direction. If you have an interest in doing the complete Spiritual Exercises in everyday life, our staff would be happy to help you to discern the Spirit s call and will recommend a director when that is timely. Sat Sun 08/30 Confession 4:00 4:30pm 08/31 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Please contact Fr. Tom Carroll (tcarroll@jrclosaltos.org) at The Jesuit Retreat Center of Los Altos for more information.
