2 Nationwide Education Nationwide, as the world s largest building society, is keen to help pupils build better life skills for better futures and as such is proud to launch this new programme. It s fun and informative and above all, engaging. We trust you and your children will enjoy using the interactive games and the downloadable fact and work sheets. What is sustainable living? Sustainable living simply means living in a way that reduces our impact on the environment. The Earth s resources are precious and our current rates of consumption mean that they will eventually run out. By reducing consumption levels and reusing and recycling goods wherever possible, the Earth s resources will be sustainable for many years to come. Why is sustainable living important? Due to current environmental trends and population growth, sustainable living has never been more important. By teaching our children the importance of the environment and the implications of consumption we can all work towards a more sustainable way of life. Sustainable Houses Much of children s lives is spent in their home or in school and so we have started this programme by looking at how buildings are constructed, materials that are used and how we get power to them. Above all, we look at the most sustainable way for us to build and use our homes. 3 The Interactive Story Book and games If you are using an interactive whiteboard simply use the track pads at the bottom of the screen to navigate between the buttons. If using a personal computer use your mouse to click on the controls at the bottom of the screen. The WASTEWAY story book The story book is a fun activity where pages can be turned and read out aloud. You can also choose to play the narration, which synchronises with highlighted words in either easy or story version. Please note, there is an accessible version of the story, which enables visually impaired users to use the story book. This can be accessed via the accessibility link on the site. Aim: To introduce pupils to the concepts of sustainable living and energy issues in a fun and engaging way. Methodology: All of the controls are at the base of the screen to allow smaller children to reach on interactive whiteboards. If you are using a personal computer, use the mouse as normal. Click on the story button to access the story. Click on the easy button to access the simpler sentence version. Use the contents button to show the contents page with chapters. Use the play button to have the story read aloud, with synchronised words highlighting. Use the pause button to select individual words for discussion. Select 1, 2 or 3 to go to Chapters 1, 2 or 3. Use the stop button to stop the story being read aloud. Use the arrow keys on the far right of the screen to turn pages forwards and backwards. Issues covered in the story: Chapter 1 No Power! Georgia, Lara and Tom are getting ready for school when there is a power cut in their home. They must all continue to get ready, with mum s help, and get to school without any power, as they find the car has no petrol. Chapter 2 The School Trip Georgia and Lara are going on a school trip to the WASTEWAY recycling centre. They get on the school bus and make their way to the centre, passing lots of interesting sights along the way, including farms, electricity pylons and wind turbines. Chapter 3 At WASTEWAY Georgia and Lara arrive at WASTEWAY, where they learn all about recycling and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle at home. They return home to tell mum all about their day and discover that the power is now back on in their home. Sustainable Living 3

4 Games: Each of these games can be found in the contents page of the Wasteway story book. You can also access each game by clicking the 'play game' links below. Missing words (4-7) This activity links into chapters two and three of the story book. By using your mouse, if you are using a PC or a track pad if you are using an interactive whiteboard, select the correct word to fill in the missing blank space in the story. Incorrect words will automatically bounce back again. Picture Quiz (4-7) By using the mouse or track pad, players need to match the word descriptions with the corresponding picture. Incorrect matches will automatically bounce back again. Jigsaw puzzle (4-7) By using the mouse or track pad, players need to fill in the picture on the left by matching the correct shapes and pictures to the right spot. 5 Sustainable Living Cont d Sustainable Living Teachers 4 to 7 year olds SUSTAINABLE HOUSES Fact sheets Energy A simple explanation of how household objects are powered by electricity, gas or batteries; how people are powered by food; and cars by fuel. Work sheets No Energy Pupils are asked to consider the implications of, and write a story about, a day with no energy. Energy Costs A simple explanation of the main energy sources for our bodies, homes and cars followed by an example of how much each might cost a family of four. The Cost of Energy A simple question sheet asking pupils about how different things might be powered and the costs involved, using the fact sheets for reference. Energy Sources An explanation of how energy can be generated through renewable and non-renewable means. Wasting Energy Pupils are asked to keep a diary over a weekend, listing all the ways in which they have reduced, reused and recycled at home. Saving Energy Simple tips to help young children understand the different ways they can reduce, reuse and recycle in everyday life. Work sheet SUSTAINABLE HOUSES 1 Energy Sources We all need fuel (energy) to work. A person gets energy from food. Can you match the other items to their energy source? Coal Kettle Fact sheet SUSTAINABLE HOUSES 1 Non-renewable and renewable energy Fossil Fuels Most of the energy we use everyday comes from fossil fuels, like gas, coal and oil. These have been formed over millions of years from dead plants and animals. They are mined from deep below land and sea. It s expensive and difficult to find, drill and then clean them ready to use. We get the energy from them by burning them, but this can often give off harmful gases into the air. If oil is spilled into oceans or on land it can dangerous to wildlife. These fuels are called non-renewable that means they can t be renewed - when they are used up, or run out, that s it! 8 Cross-curricular extensions Sustainable houses and living can be tackled in many curriculum areas - not just science - and we have listed below some ideas that will fit across the curriculum. English Ask pupils to write a new chapter for the WASTEWAY story, in which the family decide to have a recycling day. Organise the pupils into groups and ask them to discuss one of the types of energy they use in their homes. When everyone has had a turn to speak, each child should show they have listened well, by repeating what someone else in the group has said. Maths Ask the children to put all used paper in a bag for recycling. Each day, they should weigh the bag and write down the weight. At the end of the week, they should work out the total weight for the five days. Ask the children to find out about the cost of energy at home by asking parents about monthly utility bills. Science Ask the children to investigate the types of materials that can be recycled (e.g. plastic, glass, paper) and how this takes place. Give the children a range of different objects and ask them to sort them into groups according to what they re made from. Ask the children to think about their favourite foods and where their ingredients come from. History Ask the children to investigate how people lived in the past, before today s sources of power were used (e.g. cooking on an open fire rather than a gas oven, using animals for transport rather than vehicles). Geography Take the children on a trip to a local power station/recycling centre. Ask pupils to think about ways that people in their local community could improve and sustain the environment. Walk around the school and ask the children to make notes about ways the school is sustaining the environment (e.g. use of recycle bins, energy efficient light bulbs, etc). Art/DT Discuss how we could recycle different materials to create a piece of art. Ask pupils to create an artwork using recycled materials. For example, this could be a collage using magazine cuttings, a sculpture made of used objects or mosaic made of milk bottle lids. Ask the children to create an advertising poster to remind others to recycle, reduce and reuse. Show the children how to make their own recycled paper using pulp from used paper. ICT Have children make their own lists in files on different items they recycle at home or at school. Encourage the children to use the Nationwide Education site at home with their parents, reading the story aloud with them. PSHE/PSE/Health & Wellbeing/PD & MU & Citizenship Ask the children to set a simple goal something they can do to either reduce, reuse or recycle. They should monitor their own progress in sticking to their goal. Discuss some of the ways that people harm the local environment (e.g. throwing litter on the ground, cars producing pollution). 13 Teachers Curriculum Links SUSTAINABLE HOUSES Curriculum Links - Sustainable Schools for KS1 The Government aims for all schools to be sustainable by 2020 and asks them to prepare young people for a lifetime of sustainable living (Department for Children, Schools and Families, now the Department for Education) through their practice and teaching. The National Framework for Sustainable Schools (published in 2006) is broken into eight sustainability themes or doorways through which schools can establish or develop their sustainability practices.
