1 Water The Co-operative s Green Schools Revolution LESSON PLAN KS3: Creating the world s finest drink clean water. SUGGESTED TIME: 60 MINS Age group No. of pupils in cohort Classroom support (to be completed by teachers) This lesson gives your pupils insight into the processes water goes through before it reaches our taps. They ll be experimenting with different methods of purifying water and learning about how people in developing countries get their water. Learning objectives All must be able to describe basic separation techniques. Most will invent their own methods for purifying water. Some might be able to design methods of cleaning water for developing countries. Success criteria Students will be able to recall all the separation techniques and successfully produce clean water after their experiment. They will be able to state why clean water is important. They can answer a National Curriculum level-style exam question on separation techniques. Curriculum links England Use a range of scientific methods and techniques to develop and test ideas and explanations. Assess risk and work safely in the laboratory, field and workplace. Plan and carry out practical and investigative activities, both individually and in groups. Curriculum opportunities of Science key stage 3 Research, experiment, discuss and develop arguments. Use real-life examples as a basis for finding out about science; study science in local, national and global contexts and appreciate the connections between these. Use creativity and innovation in science and appreciate their importance in enterprise. Recognise the importance of sustainability in scientific and technological developments. Explore contemporary and historical scientific developments and how they have been communicated. Make links between science and other subjects and areas of the curriculum. 1.2 Applications and implications of science Explore how the creative application of scientific ideas can bring about technological developments and consequent changes in the way people think and behave.

Curriculum links continued 1.3 Cultural understanding Recognise that modern science has its roots in many different societies and cultures, and draws on a variety of valid approaches to scientific practice. 3.2 Chemical and material behaviour The particle model provides explanations for the different physical properties and behaviour of matter. Elements consist of atoms that combine together in chemical reactions to form compounds. Elements and compounds show characteristic chemical properties and patterns in their behaviour. Scotland SCN 3-16a Differentiate between pure substances and mixtures in common use and select appropriate physical methods for separating mixtures into their components. SCN 4-15a Through gaining an understanding of the structure of atoms and how they join, begin to connect the properties of substances with their possible structures. SCN 3-15b Having contributed to a variety of practical activities to make and break down compounds, describe examples of how the properties of compounds are different from their constituent elements. Wales Planning Decide on the most suitable type of enquiry to carry out and outline the planned approach/method. Developing Follow the planned approach/method, revise it as necessary and, where appropriate, use a range of apparatus and equipment safely and with skill, taking action to control the risks. The sustainable Earth The properties of solids, liquids and gases and how the particle model can be used to explain these properties. The physical and chemical properties of some elements, compounds and mixtures and how mixtures can be separated by simple techniques. The differences between physical and chemical changes using some common examples. Investigations into the patterns of behaviour of elements and compounds and their use to describe and predict their behaviour in chemical reactions. Northern Ireland Mutual understanding: respect and co-operate with others in the process of scientific enquiry, for example, work effectively as part of a team in investigative work etc. Cultural understanding: consider how the development of scientific ideas or theories relates to the historical or cultural context, e.g. the development of the heliocentric model of the solar system, Jenner s work on vaccination etc. Chemical and material behaviour: atoms and chemical changes, structures, properties, uses of materials elements, compounds and mixtures.

Resources For more information on The Co-operative s clean water in Africa campaign, take a look at: Clean water PowerPoint (supplied) Demos of the different separation techniques: filtration, chromatography, distillation Students experiment for lower ability Usual scientific equipment to filter different dirty water samples. Higher ability: Discovery of dirty-water experiment. Each group will need: Muddy water solution, with some coloured food dye (to represent dissolved solids. You can add sand etc too) Two night lights/candles Sheet of polythene or other plastic about 70 cm by 100cm Sellotape or masking tape (to make plastic sheet into a bag) Kitchen foil 60 cm x 60 cm cloth Clean plastic cup to collect clean water Clamp stand Filter funnel but no filter paper One boiling tube One hole bung (to fit boiling tube) with glass tube fitted 60 cm of plastic or rubber tube. Teaching activities Introduction (WALT) using appropriate pupil language Show the children the picture of a PlayPump. Ask them what they think it is and how it works and get them to write down as many ideas as they can (HSW apply knowledge to new situations). Explain PlayPumps to the children and compare them to how we get our water. Think about the struggle some people have to obtain clean water, what makes water clean, how much clean water they use in one day for example, even the water we flush the toilet with is drinkable! Development Independent, paired and group activity Main practical: in pairs (separation techniques topic and HSW) Lower ability: Go through different ways of cleaning water, giving demonstrations of separation techniques. Higher ability: Frame the exercise in a scenario of being trapped on a desert island or in a developing country with very little resources. Challenge the students to make the dirty water they have found drinkable. (Please see PowerPoint presentation supplied).

Differentiated activities Plenary SEN/G&T SEN students will be given the Thinking your ideas through support sheet to help plan their investigation. Different abilities can be given varying levels of National Curriculum level-style questions. Ask students to debate why a charity should fund a PlayPumps programme and cast their votes. More able groups can be given three different clean water systems to debate and vote for the best method to fund. AfL assessment opportunities (WILF) Assess prior knowledge during the starter and demos Circulate while students do their investigation and probe their thinking Task students to self-evaluate using the criteria Whole-class assessment when students vote in the plenary National Curriculum level-style question on separation techniques. Extension/homework Task students with carrying out more research on PlayPumps. Ask pupils to research exactly how much water is wasted every day in Britain. Taking the PlayPumps as inspiration, challenge the children to draw a full-scale annotated design for another method of obtaining clean water. Follow-up lessons Next lesson in the series: totally neutral water PH lesson Trip to a water-cleaning works Focus on modern water filter systems you can buy and how they work. Whole-school activity Collect rainwater and use it to water plants, fill a school pond or bird baths (project-build the bird baths). Nominate school water monitors who will be responsible for checking that fountains stop, taps are not dripping etc. Start a water-bottle recycling campaign. Encourage pupils to bring an empty bottle to school for drinking water, so they don t have to buy new plastic bottles every day. This could form part of Green Schools Revolution week. Visit for more information. Hold an assembly on the difficulties the developing world faces in obtaining clean water (include positive stories like the PlayPumps).

9 PlayPumps The innovative PlayPump water systems are powered by children s roundabouts. When children play on them, they pump water up to a storage tank for use by the whole community. The PlayPumps are so popular with the youngsters that there is never a shortage of volunteers and the highly efficient pumps also produce extra water for irrigation purposes.

10 The only water you have is dirty What are you going to do about it? Plan and carry out ways to clean your water but remember you are stranded in desert area and you only have: Two night lights/candles A sheet of polythene about 70 cm by 100cm Sellotape or masking tape (to make the plastic sheet into a bag) Kitchen foil 60 cm x 60 cm cloth Clean plastic cup to collect clean water Clamp stand Filter funnel (but no filter paper) One boiling tube One hole bung (to fit boiling tube) with glass tube fitted 60 cm of plastic or rubber tube

12 Did you cover everything? Check the criteria. How did you do? Does it smell clean? No more visible solids? Is it colourless, does it look clean? Did you heat the water to kill the bacteria? Bonus marks Did you actually boil the water so all bacteria were killed? Do you have at least half the original volume of water left?
