1 English 2 Honors Summer Reading Assignment Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell Mrs. Cawley 1. Begin at the end. After the index, there is a Reading Group Guide. Read A conversation with Malcolm Gladwell in order to acquaint yourself with the subject matter of the book. 2. Read and annotate Outliers (using Post-Its or a separate notebook DO NOT WRITE IN THE BOOK). 3. We will be having class discussion on Outliers which will be led by you and your peers. As you read, some things Gladwell says will make you say, Hm. That makes a lot of sense. Others might make you furrow your brow in disagreement or disbelief. Pull 3 quotes from the novel that you find interesting that you would like to bring to the class to discuss. These quotes can be ones with which you strongly agree, strongly disagree, or ones that simply resonate with you. Fill in the chart by copying down three quotes, their page numbers, and anything you d like to say about them. I will be asking you to share these quotes and your thoughts with the class. You will be graded based on the written portion: quote selection & thoughtful analysis, as well as your participation in the discussion: sharing your thoughts on the quote(s) & commenting on the quotes contributed by others. A rubric is attached. This portion of the summer reading assignment is worth 37 points. 4. Lastly, answer all the questions (1-9) in the Questions and topics for discussion section in the back of the book. (I would suggest previewing these questions before you begin to help you read with a focus.) Each response should be a robust paragraph that shows a mature and deep level of thinking. Use sophisticated language and cite textual evidence wherever possible. Although the questions are asking for your personal opinion, refrain from using first person. State your opinions as facts. For example, question four asks, Do you believe that there is such a thing as innate talent? Instead of writing, I do/do not believe there is such a thing as innate talent... simply say, There is/is no such thing as innate talent... and support it with evidence. A second rubric is attached for the grading of this portion of the assignment. This portion of the summer reading assignment is worth 63 points. Enjoy the book!
