1 Course Syllabus Education Foundations 235: Child and Adolescent Development Time of Class: 5:15 8:15 p.m., Monday night Class Meeting: N/E 213 Fall 2010 Instructor: Tonya Hameister Office: N/E phone: (home), Office Hours: (office) Course Description: Welcome to Child and Adolescent Development. This course is a foundation for many other courses in Human Services and Education. We will follow the physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth of the human from infancy to adolescence. Through many psychological theories and scientific advances, we will study the physical and emotional maturation of children and better understand why both nature and nurture affect so much of what we do. Required Text: Patterson, C. (2008). Child development. New York: McGraw-Hill Publishers. Weekly Chapter Responses: Please understand that I am requiring a one paragraph review of the details of the reading. This will be taken into account for your overall grade. You will receive 10 points per week for the reflective response. I am not looking for regurgitation. I am looking for thoughtful reflection about the material. You should consider these lead questions: What is the chapter about? Why is this information meaningful to me as a thoughtful practitioner? How does this chapter information build from other chapters? What do I agree or disagree with in this chapter? (Total point value: 13 weeks completed but 10 weeks count toward final grade with 10 points per discussion topic completed= 100 points for discussion paragraphs. Each activity, project or test is worth a certain amount of points. Discussion Board- 12 checks on discussion work but 10 top responses X10 points each =100 points (you choose your best 10 responses) Observation Paper- 100 points 2 quizzes and 1 final test- 50 points each for quizzes= 100 points points for the final= 200 points 2 journal article reviews- 2 articles X 50 points each = 100 points Classroom Activities= 10 activities X 10 points each = 100 points Project and presentation- 200 total points Total semester points = 800 points

4 Course Grading Scale A= points 94%-100% A-= points 92%-93.9% B+= points 90%-91.9% B= points 84%-89% B-= points 82%-83.9% C+= points 80%-81.9% C= points 74%-79.8% C-= points 72%-73.9% D, F = Please, don t go there!!!! Course Requirements: Class activities (lesson reviews, behavioral plans according to specific theories, special education programming and reflections of science and theory, issues affecting adolescent development, cross-cultural reviews, contemporary professional development examples and reflections of child and adolescent development, etc.) 100 points total Discussion Board- You will be expected to log into D2L once a week and comment on the position statement given by the instructor. You will attempt to complete 12 discussion topic responses in a paragraph form. The top 10 grades for discussion topics will be counted toward your grade at 10 points each. Exams- 2 quizzes and a final exam- 50 points for each quiz and 100 points for the final (flash cards with vocabulary words from the end of the chapter would be a great idea for studying!) Journal reviews- 2 review papers- 2 to 3 pages each for 50 points per journal article review (100 total points). Observation paper- (from Dr. Kate Short-Meyerson s syllabus) 100 points

5 The role of observer is very important in the collection of information about the human being. This assignment will help you better understand the skills of the observer and the interactions that affect children and their development. You should observe a typically developing schoolage child or adolescent. The observation can take place in any public setting such as a museum, airport, mall, etc. The children can be independently playing or interacting with others such as friends, teachers or parents. Choose an interaction that lasts about minutes. NOTE: Concentrate on writing about the child you are observing and only that child. As you observe, you should take detailed notes, including context (e.g. what the child/adolescent was doing and/or what was happening in his/her environment). You will be expected to write a two page report of your findings and be ready to present your information in class. A rubric for grading and a lengthier explanation of the expectations of your work will be available on D2L. Project and presentation ( from Dr. Kate Short-Meyerson s syllabus)-200 total points The project will ask you to become familiar with a contemporary issue in Educational Psychology and in schools today. You must complete the project as a small group which requires meetings outside the class time. I suggest that you work diligently and consistently on this since there are many parts and the research for background information takes time. You must: 1. Choose a topic or issue from those available from the instructor (or one you might be pining on see me for approval) 2. Summary of two articles- Each member of the group will complete a one-page summary of 2 peer reviewed articles that address your topic of choice. Make sure to consider the quality of the pieces and whether they are substantial enough to add quality information to your presentation. NOTE: Additional resources will be needed to complete this presentation (book reviews, book chapters, peer reviewed articles, online sources from knowledgeable professional organizations, etc.). I recommend that you consider at least 3 scholarly sources for each person in the group for a total of at least nine sources. Article summaries are due two weeks prior to the class presentation on the topic. 3. Group Presentation summary- As a group you must turn in a 5 page summary of your presentation. All members are expected to add to the paper substantively. All members must also take active roles in the presentation to the class. Remember the audience when creating a presentation. You must consider who your audience is, how to catch the audience s attention, how to keep the audience s attention and how to effectively keep the main points of the presentation fresh in each audience member s mind. NOTE: Think about these questions when creating your presentation: What are the main ideas/themes of your topic? How does it connect to one of the major developmental theories this semester? Why is it a contemporary issue in educational psychology today? How will this information help me to be a more informed practitioner in my field area?

6 1. A One Page Lesson Plan outlining the learning goals and activities chosen for the 15 minute presentation and a reference list of sources created in APA style. The Group presentation summary and the one page lesson are due the day of your presentation. 2. Reflection Paper-Please individually assess your work for the project and your presentation in two pages. Consider what helped and hindered your work, what capacity of presentation skills you and others in your group have and what worked with the audience and what did not work. Think like a professional educator and critique your group s work as a whole and in the smaller details. This paper is due one week
