2 1. Ask yourself What place am I rounding my number to? Nearest Ten? Nearest Hundred? Nearest Thousand? 2. Think Which two tens, hundreds or thousands does my number fall between? Examples: 32 falls between 30 and falls between 500 and ,492 falls between 7,000 and 8, Look What is the number just right of the place I am rounding to in my number? Examples: 32 Tens place is 3; right is Hundreds place is 5; just right is 7. 7,492 Thousands place is 7; just right is Decide *If the number right is 0,1,2,3 or 4 round down smaller number. *If the number right is 5,6,7,8 or 9 round up to the bigger number.

4 2. Think Which two tens, hundreds or thousands does my number fall between? * * * ,000 Examples: *32 falls between 30 and 40. (30 40) *576 falls between 500 and 600. ( ) *7,492 falls between 7,000 and 8,000. (7,000 8,000)
5 3. Look What is the number JUST right of the place I am rounding to in my number? Examples: 32 Rounding ten; Tens place is 3; just right is Rounding hundred; Hundreds place is 5; just right is 7. 7,492 Rounding thousand; Thousands place is 7; just right is 4.
6 3. Decide **If the number right of the place you are rounding to is 0,1,2,3 or 4 round smaller number, OR **If the number right of the place you are rounding to is 5,6,7,8 or 9 round larger number. Examples: *32 comes between 30 and 40. It rounds to 30 which means it is closer to comes between 500 and 600. It rounds to 600 which means it is closer to ,492 comes between 7,000 and 8,000. It rounds to 7,000 which means it is closer to 7,000.
