Next Generation Fiber Access
Helping Customers Fiber Forward Helping customers understand next generation technologies New standards Factors impacting choices Ensuring a smooth migration to next generation Technology coexistence Network evolution Calix future proofs your network ONTs and OLTs 2
Fiber is Our Future Fiber is the only access technology that will meet consumer demand in 2020 Fiber is the only technology capable of supporting 100+ Mbps to GE bandwidths, free of distance limitations Fiber can support the asymmetry of today and the increasing need for symmetrical bandwidth going forward Fiber standards-both PON and Active Ethernet-address the needs of consumers today and can scale to bandwidth demands of the future Access Network 3
Next Generation Fiber Access Both the ITU and IEEE continue to evolve fiber access standards The ITU has completed the 10G GPON standard (10G/2.5G) A 10G /5G up is under consideration at FSAN IEEE has completed 10G EPON standards for 10G/10G and 10G/1G ITU-T/FSAN 2.5 GPON (G.984) 10G GPON(G.987) IEEE Active Ethernet (802.3ah) EPON (802.3ah) 1GE symmetrical 10G EPON (802.3av) 4
U.S. Fiber Access by Technology Number of Service Providers Using Technology GPON +116% BPON - 48% AE / Pt-to-Pt +243% EPON - 6% Nov Nov Source: Broadband Properties, October 2010 *AE/Pt-to-Pt includes business services only 5
Comparing 10G Standards 10G GPON 10G EPON 2.5G GPON OLT 2.5G GPON ONT 1G EPON OLT 1G EPON ONU 10G GPON OLT 10G GPON ONT 10G GPON 10G EPON OLT Bandwidth 10/2.5, 10/5 or 10/10 (TBD) 10/1, 10/10 10G EPON Positives Less asymmetry, 2.5 overlay 10/10 for business/mdus Key challenges 10/2.5 behind 10G EPON by 9 months; still working on 10/5 or 10/10 standard Commercial availability G EPON ONU 10 Gbps upstream is not viable for outdoor, SFUs; 1 Gbps up too low 6
2.5 GPON and AE in One ONT Calix auto-detect ONTs: Automatically switch to the technology used: 2.5G GPON or GE Active Ethernet Allow common inventory of ONTs to be used for all types of customers and applications Enable dedicated and optically split fiber access for business and residential deployments Eliminates the need for truck rolls or upgrade at customer premises when switching from one standard to another Designed to support bandwidth requirements up to 1GE symmetrical line rates 2.5 GPON OLT Active Ethernet OLT 7
Which Way Do I Evolve My Network? Outside plant considerations are key: Either AE or 10G PON are viable if feeder fibers /conduit are plentiful In higher density areas the sheer number of fibers will favor 10G PON Example: Imagine putting 2300 fibers on a pole versus 72 fibers 10G PON is the best choice when feeder fibers or conduit are limited Passive splitting in the outside plant is cheaper than placing cabinets with active electronics Video Headend ISP Video Data Aggregate Homerun PSTN Central Office 8
2.5 GPON With RF Video and IPTV Headend: Analog cable and IPTV encoders QAM Modulator EDFA: Amplifies signal to required db level 100% Digital IPTV Analog Broadcast Video or CWDM 1490 nm downstream λ 1310 nm upstream λ 1550 nm overlay λ Splitter 2.5 GPON Customer Delivering basic analog services via RF and interactive via IPTV Basic analog only subscribers served via RF Subscribers wanting enhanced services served via IPTV with STB Option to operate both IPTV and RF within a premises concurrently 9
2.5 GPON to GE Active Ethernet Headend: IPTV encoders 100% Digital IPTV E7-2 and E7-20 support both GPON and GE Active Ethernet line cards or Calix ONTs support auto-detect GPON and AE 1490 nm downstream λ 1310 nm upstream λ Active Ethernet Customer 2.5G GPON customer converted to GE Active Ethernet customer RF video head end signals converted to IPTV Remove of optical splitters, CWDMs and EDFAs 10
2.5 GPON With RF Video and IPTV Headend: Analog cable and IPTV encoders QAM Modulator EDFA: Amplifies signal to required db level 100% Digital IPTV Analog Broadcast Video or CWDM 1490 nm downstream λ 1310 nm upstream λ 1550 nm overlay λ Splitter 2.5 GPON Customer Delivering basic analog services via RF and interactive via IPTV Basic analog only subscribers served via RF Subscribers wanting enhanced services served via IPTV with STB Option to operate both IPTV and RF within a premises concurrently 11

2.5 GPON with 10G EPON Overlay Headend Analog Cable Encoders QAM Modulator EDFA Amplifies signal to required db level 10G GPON Customer Analog Broadcast Video 1577 nm Downstream λ 1270 nm Upstream RF λ or CWDM 1490 nm Downstream λ 1310 nm Upstream λ 1550 nm Upstream λ Splitter 2.5G GPON Customer 10G EPON overlaid on top of 2.5G GPON E7-2, E7-20 support 2.5G and 10G GPON cards 2.5G GPON customer continues to run RF video and/or IPTV 13
What Comes After 10G PON? FSAN (ITU) is working on NG-PON2 to follow 10G GPON Several technologies are being considered for the standard OCDMA PON OFDM PON WDM PON-a recent IEEE article identified eight different versions Coherent PON is a WDM PON proposed by Nokia-Siemens about which Calix and the standards committee is particularly excited The current WDM PON marketed by LG-Nortel is one of the 8 WDM PONs, but is not likely to emerge as the standard We do not envision commercial availability before 2015 No standard and many competing technologies and interests Standards process will take at least 2 years Key challenges in cost and performance of components 14
Future Proof with Calix ONTs Calix gives you choice which way to evolve your network Calix 700GE ONTs have filters that protect 2.5 GPON downstream receivers from the new 1577 nm 10G PON downstream when operating in both RF and non-rf modes Calix ONTs support symmetrical GE Active Ethernet today 15
Future Proof with Calix OLTs E7-20 and E7-2 designed for AE 2.5GPON and next gen PON 100Gbps per slot bandwidths C7 with 7.0 release already supports 10G per card on slots 9 and 10 Product roadmap currently shows only 10G GPON 16
Calix Fiber Solutions Evolution G and 2.5G GPON Residential 2.5 GPON Mobile Backhaul 2.5 GPON Business Services 2.5 GPON Ethernet OAM 10G GPON 10G EPON Business Pt-to-Pt Ethernet Pt-to-Pt GE Ethernet OAM Residential Active Ethernet Mobile Backhaul Pt-to-Pt GE 17
Calix Ensures A Smooth Migration Calix is committed to future proofing our customers networks All Calix 700GE ONTs coexist on the same ODN with 10G PONs Guidelines will be issued for all 700 ONTs in 2011 Calix will be offering both 10G GPON and 10G EPON Based on customers application requirements and acceptable asymmetry The E7-2 and E7-20 platforms were designed from the ground up to support 10G GPON, 10G EPON and AE/Pt-to-Pt The C7 supports 10Gbps per slot for future services such as 10G GPON For some markets and applications, migration to GE over AE/Pt-to-Pt makes more sense than 10G PON Calix auto-detect ONTs already support GE over AE/Pt-to-Pt Calix will conduct 10G GPON and 10G EPON demo s in 2011, with commercial availability in
