4 How do I find my institution's URL to access Canvas apps on my mobile device? Every institution (or school) uses a specific URL to access Canvas. Institutions follow a URL structure of [your institution name].instructure.com or canvas.[your institution name].edu. This URL is required to access Canvas mobile apps. Many of the mobile apps allow you to search for your institution or school district directly on the app login page. However, if you cannot locate your institution in the app search list, this lesson shows you how to locate your institution's URL. Note: The URL for Canvas Network is learn.canvas.net. The URL for Free-For-Teachers (FFT) accounts is canvas.instructure.com. Page 4

5 Direct Access to Canvas URL Some institutions will use a direct link to their Canvas account, which makes the Canvas URL easy to find. Hover over the Canvas link and view the Canvas URL, or click the link to be taken directly to the page. Page 5

6 You can also view the Canvas URL at the top of the Canvas login page. Redirect to Canvas URL via Authentication Some institutions may choose to have another domain redirect to Canvas, especially if the institution has an existing portal for student courses. You may have to sign into your institution's internal authentication system before accessing Canvas. As an example, students at Utah State University can access Canvas after signing in to the university's single sign-on landing page. Page 6

7 View Canvas URL Hover over the Canvas button and view the Canvas URL, or click the button to be taken directly to the page. You can also view the Canvas URL at the top of the Canvas user dashboard. These screenshots are acknowledged by their respective universities for use in this lesson. Page 7

8 What is the Polls for Canvas app? The Polls for Canvas app is the easy way for instructors to request student opinion in the classroom and collect responses with ease users only need to download the Polls for Canvas app on their smartphone devices. Polls for Canvas requires a Canvas account. If you are an instructor and your institution does not use Canvas, sign up for a Free for Teacher account. If you are a student and you have been invited to a Canvas course, you can create an account as part of the course invitation. The Polls for Canvas app is available for both Android and ios devices. 9 Create Polls Instructors can create poll questions and start a poll with all their Canvas courses, either all sections in a course or individual sections in different courses. Create opinion polls with no set answer, or create a poll question that requires a correct response. Stop the poll at any time and show and hide poll results with students. Page 9

10 Take Polls Students can view and take all polls available to them. Polls are organized as current or closed; current polls are sorted as to whether or not they have been answered. If an instructor allows, students can also view results for a closed poll. Instructors also have the option to view and take any poll they create for their course. Page 10

11 How do I download the Polls app on my Android device? You can download Polls in the Play Store. Open App Store Open your Android device and tap the Play Store icon. Open Search In the app menu, tap the Search icon. Page 11

12 Search for App In the search field, type Canvas by Instructure. Tap the full name when it appears. Open App Tap the More button if you don't see the Polls app. Page 12

16 Download App The app will download and install. Open App When the app has downloaded and installed onto your phone, you can access the app immediately by tapping the Open button. 17 How do I take a poll on my Android device? Polls are simple to take on your Android device. Open Poll On your dashboard, tap the name of a current, unanswered poll. Page 17

18 Select Answer Tap the circle next to your answer choice. Page 18

19 Submit Poll When you are finished, tap the Submit poll button. Page 19

20 Confirm Submit Poll Confirm your poll answer was submitted [1]. The gray dot indicates your answer choice for the poll [2]. Tap the back button on your Android device to return to the dashboard. When your instructor shares results for the poll, you can view all poll results. Page 20

21 How do I view poll results on my Android device? When your instructor shares results for the poll, you can view poll results. Open Poll In the closed poll section, tap the name of a closed poll. Page 21

22 View Results View the results of the poll. You can view the percentage of students who chose each answer [1]. Your answer is indicated by a green check mark [2]. Page 22

23 View Results with Correct Answer If your poll was created with a correct answer, a green dot indicates the preferred answer. If your answer choice was not the correct answer, a red X icon will appear by your answer. Page 23

24 How do I log out of the Polls app on my Android device? You can easily log out of Polls when you are finished using the app. Note: Depending on your user role, your menu options may vary. Open Overflow Menu Tap the overflow menu. Log Out Tap the Logout button. Page 24

26 How do I log in to the Polls app as an instructor on my Android device? Before logging into the Polls app, make sure you have downloaded the app from the Play Store. You will need to know your institution's URL to access Canvas on your Android device. Note: You must have an account to log in to Canvas. If you don't have an account, view the Canvas sign-up lesson. Open Polls App Open your Android device and tap the Polls icon. Page 26

27 Enter Your Canvas URL Enter your institution's Canvas URL in the URL field [1]. Learn how to locate your institution's Canvas URL. Tap the arrow link [2]. If you are logging in to Canvas Network, tap the Connect to Canvas Network link [3]. Page 27

28 Note: Once you have entered a URL to access Canvas, the Canvas app will remember the URL so you do not have to retype it. Page 28

29 Log in to Canvas The URL you are logging into will be displayed at the top of your screen. Log into Canvas using your username [1] and password [2]. Tap the Login button [3]. If you don't know your password, tap the I don't know my password button [4]. Note: If your institution has customized the mobile login screen, this option may not appear. Page 29

34 Delete Poll Question If you need to delete your poll question, or if you are finished with your poll question and have stopped all polls, you can delete a poll question by swiping the poll question to the left. Page 34

36 Take Polls As an instructor, you have access to take any polls you create for your courses if you are enrolled in the section where the poll is published. Once you open the Take Polls view, you'll see the same interface that your students use when taking polls. To take a poll, tap the overflow menu [1] then tap the Take Polls button [2]. Page 36

38 View Unanswered Polls When you publish a poll for your course section, polls you have not taken appear in the Unanswered Polls section. Page 38

40 How do I create a poll question on my Android device? As an instructor, you can create a poll for your courses. Create Poll To create a new poll, tap the Add button. Page 40

53 View Poll(s) The app displays the course and section for the poll question. A blue dot indicates a current poll. To view the status of a poll, tap the name of the poll. Page 53

54 View your poll to see responses from your students. If your poll was created with a correct answer, a gray dot indicates the preferred answer response. The poll also displays a timer so you can see how long the poll has been open. To stop the poll, tap the Stop Poll button. Page 54

56 Delete Poll If you need to delete a poll session, swipe the poll session to the left. Note: Deleting a poll session cannot be undone. Page 56

View Dashboard Your Polls dashboard shows all available polls. When your instructor publishes a poll for your course section, the poll appears in the Current tab [1]. Polls that have been closed by your instructor and are no longer available for submission appear within the Closed tab [2]. Swipe your device to refresh the app and check for new polls. Page 73
