1 Check out e books on your ipad, iphone or ipod Touch Go to the App Store and download Overdrive. (It s free!) Open the Overdrive app. You will be prompted to sign up.

2 To make an account, you will have to enter your name, and a password. If you do not wish to receive s from Overdrive, uncheck the box that says me recommendations Click Sign Up when you are done. You will then be taken to the Overdrive home screen. If this is your first time using, it will tell you you have no books checked out yet. In the future, books you have checked out will show up here.

3 The three lines at the top left of the screen will always take you to the Overdrive home menu. You can start looking for books by clicking on those three lines. Your menu will open up. To get started finding a book, add a library by hitting Add a Library. Type in the city name, library name, or zip code. If you type in just Altoona, several choices will come up. Choose Indianhead Federated Altoona

4 Click on Wisconsin Public Library Consortium. After you add it (the star will turn yellow), you will have to click it again. You ll be taken to the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium site, Wisconsin s Digital Library. Something to note: The default loan period is always set to one week, and many people like to keep books longer. To change this before you check out a book, you will have to sign in. To do so, click on the little orange symbol that looks like head and shoulders. Search for Altoona, and choose Indianhead Federated Altoona. Then enter your library card number when prompted. This is the number underneath your barcode and should be entered with no spaces.

5 When you are logged in, you ll see your bookshelf which may be empty if you have not checked out any books yet. Click on Settings. (This is located on the right side of the screen on the ipad, and the top of the screen on the iphone.) In Settings, you can set your lending periods. Whichever box is highlighted orange is what you will get. There are also options to set the maturity level and change the contrast. Overdrive will save your settings for the next time you log in. If you know you will always want a three week checkout period, you only have to change your settings this one time.

6 When you are done, click on Wisconsin s Digital Library to take you back to the homepage. You can search for books in a few ways. 1. Use the search box located on the top right to search by author, title or subject. 2. To browse genres or formats, use the links in the purple box at the top of the page. If at any point you want to view the links after you ve left the home page, hit the Menu button and it will reappear. The above image shows what you will see on your ipad. On an iphone, you will see the following: Use the magnifying glass to search by author, title or subject, and click on the three orange lines on the top left to browse genres and formats. To tell if a book is available or not, look in the top right corner. There will be a book icon or a

7 headphones icon. If the icon is headphones, that means the book is an audiobook. A black icon means the book is available, a gray icon means you will need to place a hold. To see only available books within your search on your ipad, look to the facets on the left and touch Available Now under Show Me. On your iphone, click on gray bar that says Filter search by: at the top of the screen and and then choose Available Now. When you find a book you like, click on it. If you are signed in, there will be an orange box next to the book that says Borrow. If you are not signed in, it will say Sign in for Availability. Click the button to sign in if you are not already. If you want more information about the book before borrowing, you can hit More.

8 When you are ready to check it out, hit Borrow. You have now checked out the book and it is on your Wisconsin Digital Library account bookshelf, which you will automatically be taken to. Even though you have the book checked out, you will need to download it to the Overdrive app. Hit the orange Download button. Select Adobe EPUB ebook. Hit Confirm and Download. The book is now on your ipad/pod/phone!

9 To get back to the Overdrive home screen to read your book, hit the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the upper left corner. Choose Bookshelf. Your book should now appear on your bookshelf. To read it, Click on it. The app will give you tips on how to read the book. Follow the instructions. Swipe left or right to turn the page. To get back to your bookshelf, change text size, adjust brightness or use bookmarks, hold your finger down in the middle of the page until you see black edges pop up on the top and bottom. The upper left icon with three lines is still your menu. You can use that to get another book or go back to the bookshelf. Use the sun in the lower left to adjust brightness. Use the Aa icon

10 to adjust text size. You can try other buttons to see what your other options are. Your book will automatically become unavailable when the loan period ends. To erase it off your device or return it early, go to your bookshelf and hold your finger down on the cover until options to delete or return pop up.
