Your collection day is: Last year we recycled and treated over 80% of the waste we collected. Help keep your community streets clean and green by recycling more using the Council s free recycling and rubbish service. Collection summary Food recycling weekly collections Lockable food recycling bin (to be kept outside) Kitchen caddy (to be kept indoors). all cooked and uncooked food in compostable liners or wrapped in newspaper. Putting your recycling and rubbish out for collection We collect your recycling and rubbish on the same day of the week but with different vehicles. All collections are weekly except garden waste which is fortnightly. We collect as normal on all bank holidays except over Christmas and New Year. recycling weekly collections Green box household plastic packaging - Any plastic bottle (including bleach and cleaning bottles) and any pot, tub or tray used to contain food, but NO black plastic. Blue bag Cardboard. Brown paper. Paper. Glass bottles and jars. Cans and aerosols. Plus 10 other materials. Food and drinks cartons. Rubbish weekly collections Black plastic sacks only non-recyclable items. NO food waste. Garden waste fortnightly charged service Wheeled bin or Council sacks all green waste from your garden that we can compost including grass, weeds, leaves and small branches. You must: Put out your containers by 7am on your collection day but not before 8pm the previous night. Put them out at the front edge of your property where they can be easily seen by our crews. Bring your emptied containers back in on your collection day. You can be fined for leaving rubbish and/or recycling out at the wrong time or place or if it is not contained in appropriate containers and is causing a mess. Living on campus? Please contact your University to find out about recycling in your halls of residence.

Food recycling Please use your weekly food waste recycling collection. Do not put food in with your rubbish. It s really important to use your lockable food recycling bin to stop animals and birds attacking your rubbish for food. Use your kitchen caddy and larger outside food recycling bin to recycle all your cooked and uncooked food waste. We generate electricity and fertilizer from this and it will help us keep your street clean from gulls attacking your black rubbish sacks for food. Line your kitchen caddy with a compostable liner (bag) or newspaper (wrap your food waste in newspaper into a parcel like fish and chips) and keep handy in your kitchen. Empty your caddy by placing your liners into your food recycling bin outside before it gets too full. Rinse both bins regularly to keep them clean. Make sure you keep your food recycling bin locked by pulling the handle forwards so it is secure from animals and birds. Yes please: No thanks: No plastic bags. No packaging of any sort. No liquids or cooking oils. Please use only compostable liners with this seedling logo. You can buy 5 litre compostable liners from local shops and supermarkets. View a list of stockists Online offers are often the cheapest, visit Green box recycling Small electrical appliances Mixed paper Cans, tins, and aerosols Household plastic packaging any plastic bottle (including bleach and cleaning bottles). Plastic tubs, pots and trays used to contain food but NO black plastic. Glass bottles and jars Foil Clothes Shoes Spectacles Batteries Car batteries Engine oil Mobile phones Printer cartridges You must use your green box recycling collection. Please sort the different materials in your box to ensure we recycle the correct things and help our crews to sort faster and reduce traffic congestion. If you have space at home, you could order an extra free green box use your new one to mix your cans and plastics together and put all other recycling in the other box. Any small electrical item that uses a plug or batteries that will fit into a carrier bag. Place next to your green box. Including envelopes and greeting cards. You don t need to remove staples or windows from envelopes. Rinse and squash cans but no need to remove labels. Rinse, squash and put the tops back on to bottles to save space on our vehicles. It is ok to mix cans and plastic together in your box. Rinse and screw metal tops back on. No need to remove labels. Wash and squash. Including clothes, towels, sheets, and curtains in any condition but they must be clean place in a plastic bag to keep dry. Any condition tie together in pairs and place in a plastic bag to keep dry. Include case if possible. All household types. Place together in a small bag at the top of your box. Place next to your green box. Must be in a sealed engine oil container placed next to your green box. Include charger if possible. Any household toner or ink cartridges used for printers

Confused about plastic packaging? Don t worry about looking at plastic types on your household packaging as this can be tricky and confusing to find. There is a much simpler way to know what you can recycle: Yes please: The easiest way to remember is that you can recycle any plastic bottle (including bleach and cleaning bottles) and any tub, pot or tray used to contain food UNLESS IT IS BLACK. No thanks: No black plastic such as food trays and bags. no film such as cling film, bags, bubble wrap and cellotape. No crisp packets. No polystyrene. no hard non-packaging plastic such as plant pots, toys and washing up bowls. no plastic used to contain medicine or garden chemicals. If you need new or additional free recycling containers please get in touch see back page for contact details. Your weekly rubbish collection Use this collection only for items you can t recycle. Do not put food waste in your rubbish. Problems can arise between you and your neighbours if you do not take responsibility for keeping your house and garden clear from rubbish. We take littering offences seriously and will fine and prosecute where necessary. We don t supply wheeled bins for your rubbish. Use black plastic sacks or carrier bags (tied) to contain your rubbish for collection. We recommend you use a conventional dustbin to keep your rubbish secure. If your property does not have a dustbin, please ask your landlord to provide one. This will prevent gulls and animals ripping open bags which will cause street mess. Please don t overfill your sacks so they can be picked up without them splitting open. Please wrap anything sharp, like broken glass, in plenty of newspaper first. Re-usable rubbish bags You must use your weekly cardboard recycling collection Yes please: Cardboard. Food and drink cartons. Brown paper. No thanks: Plastic, sticky tape and polystyrene. recycle If you live in a street where we have issued Council re-usable rubbish bags you must use them. You must: Put all your black plastic rubbish sacks inside your re-usable rubbish bag to stop birds and other animals from scavenging your rubbish. If you are unsure if your property should have a re-usable rubbish bag or if you need to order one, please contact Council Connect (see back page). You must flatten or cut your cardboard so it fits into your blue bag and onto our vehicles (no bigger than 45cm square). You can be fined if you do not use your re-usable rubbish bag to contain your rubbish.

Keep your garden clean Please keep your front and rear gardens clear of rubbish. Leaving bags of unsecure rubbish in front and rear gardens has an impact on your neighbours and can cause a public health problem. It will also attract birds and other animals and generate complaints. Please be mindful of this and use our weekly collections to keep your gardens clear. We will not collect garden waste in black plastic sacks. If you have garden waste you can use any of the following options. Garden waste You can choose to: 1. Compost this at home we offer bargain priced compost bins delivered to your home. Visit or call * for latest offer details. * Calls cost 5p per minute plus your standard network charge. 2. Use our fortnightly garden waste composting collection you can hire a wheeled bin for an annual charge or buy Council paper sacks from Council Connect One Stop Shops or local outlets. Visit our website for current charges and details or contact Council Connect Take it to your Recycling Centre for free (see inside back page). The World Heritage City of Bath Our city is unique, it attracts tourists from all over the world. Please help by doing your bit to keep it tidy for everyone, including local residents, so we all have a city we can be proud of. Why should you reduce, re-use and recycle? Did you know that students make up approximately 30% of the population of the City of Bath? Last year we produced 85,612 tonnes of waste in Bath and North East Somerset. It costs us 60 on average per household, each year to collect and dispose of your rubbish. Recycling costs us 42 on average per household each year to collect and treat your green box, food and cardboard recycling. While we can provide you with the services, it is up to you to use them and help us reduce, re-use and recycle your waste. We currently recycle around 50% of the waste from households and recover around 80% of the materials from black plastic sacks through a mechanical biological treatment facility in Avonmouth. Reduce We produce more and more waste each year, which causes a strain on our resources and budgets. We must reduce what we waste by being more mindful of the things we buy and consume. There are lots of ways to reduce your rubbish. For tips and advice you can visit our facebook page (see back page) or check out the following websites:

Re-use Modern products often get replaced very quickly and sometimes before they become faulty. This creates the demand for our precious natural resources. If you don t have a use for your unwanted items, someone else might. You should try and re-use items by advertising them locally or donating them to charity. Donate any non-perishable food to Foodbank sofa project and the Genesis Furniture Project may collect good quality items from you for free at their discretion, for re-use. advertise, give away or find items for free on or By buying second hand items you are re-using them or giving them a second chance. You might also be able to pick up a bargain and sometimes better quality than you would find new. Please see our event pages on our website (see back page) for all our events or visit our facebook page for any other local re-use events. Have you tried upcycling? It s great to breathe new life into previously loved items. there are lots of websites to help if you search for upcycling on the internet. Recycling Centres We have three Recycling Centres where you can take larger unwanted or broken household items or extra recycling or rubbish for free. Please take your student ID card to show site staff when you visit, to prove you are a resident. You will not be allowed on site without proof. Your local Recycling Centre is at Midland Road, Bath, BA1 3AT (by Argos on the Upper Bristol Road). Argos Recycle By recycling more you will; save valuable resources, helping the planet. save money, as it costs less to recycle than to send it for recovery or to landfill. keep your streets clean by stopping birds and other animals from scavenging your rubbish sacks. recycle Everything we collect gets re-used or recycled into new things. You can find out where all your recycling goes around the county by looking at our map on our website:
