2 Waste Separation & Recycling Mode An effective recycling system has been developed covering many waste recovery measures that are tailor-made, pragmatic and fine-tuned to fit specific site conditions and to achieve optimal results. Traditional (static) collection mode using recycling bins is complemented by active and mobile collection measures. Common recyclable materials (Paper, plastic & metal) Recycling bins installed at a very high spatial density to cater for the large volume of recyclables arising from massive crowd in a racing event; Locations and deployment of tailor-made recycling bins are carefully chosen and tested, in order to be as accessible and user-friendly as possible; To overcome space constraint, mobile recycling team is assigned to patrol the racecourse promenade with trolleys to collect waste paper and plastics for recycling; Special arrangements to recover unused betting tickets: i) plastic trays underneath ticket columns to collect unused tickets returned by users & ii) designated staff to pick up unused tickets left on seats at the end of racing event; Beverage kiosks serving beer in plastic jars and jars are returned, collected, washed and re-use. This arrangement substantially reduces the number of plastic cups being consumed. To minimize impact to neighbourhood, racecourse has to be cleared and closed (with lights turned off) within a very short time when a racing day/night ends. There is not enough time to finish sorting of recyclables and collection of waste at the spot in one go. Bags of waste are collected quickly and stored temporarily for secondary sorting the next day to recover uncontaminated recyclables 2

3 Extended items of recyclable materials Waste glass bottles from food and beverage service areas are collected and send to local recycler; Used ink & toner cartridge are stored and recovered by the suppliers; Rechargeable battery recycling bins are installed in areas accessible by public; End-of-life fluorescent lamps are stored at a central collection point with valid chemical waste producer registration among different HKJC premises before sending to chemical waste treatment centre for proper treatment and recovery of mercury; A waste compactor is acquired to reduce the amount of space required to temporarily store the solid waste and to improve the hygienic conditions; According to HKJC s waste reduction plan, HKJC is actively exploring a new initiative to convert food waste generated from catering areas to compost for landscape applications in Shatin Racecourse. Communication Place recycle slogan at eye catching area and on waste bins Display notice on Diamond Vision at start and end of race meeting Staff Motivation and Participation Newsletter is distributed to staff regularly, disseminating information about waste reduction and energy saving initiatives and achievements in HKJC; Facilities management team continually explores new initiatives and measures by organizing site visits to other C&I premises and exchanging ideas with experienced peers. Results and Achievements Nearly 250 sets of recycling bins/facilities being installed in the Stands of Shatin Racecourse. Over 22 tonnes of waste paper being recycled form the Shatin Racecourse every year. 3

Apart from the recycling bins in public area, staff are using self-designed recycling bins that are very handy ; Tailor-made waste paper collection trolley to facilitate the cleaning staff for easy disposal of waste paper and minimize work related accidents; High awareness and strong participation by staff results in high recovery rate; A centralized material recovery area is designated in the loading bay to provide sufficient space to sort, collect and store recyclable materials; Volume of waste metals (e.g. aluminum cans) is effectively reduced by using special compressor; Large mobile cages, instead of common recycling bins, are used to collect large amount of waste paper from the printing unit; Toner cartridge and rechargeable batteries are collected by thematic and eye-catching recycling bins 4

6 Extended items of recyclable materials End-of-life fluorescent lamps are stored at a central collection point with valid chemical waste producer registration before sending to chemical waste treatment centre for proper treatment and recovery of mercury; Chemical wastes such as waste industrial oil and lead-acid from batteries are properly stored and regularly transferred to chemical treatment centre for recycling, treatment and disposal; Along the routine items, various thematic recycling campaigns are conducted throughout the year. e.g. ad hoc collection of mooncake container and furniture; For office renovation project, re-use and recycle materials before disposal; Materials and items collected not only sold to recyclers but also donated to charity organizations. Staff Motivation and Participation Staff portal is established online to help to disseminate information on green policy and programs. Recognition is given to staff members for providing green initiatives and applying green concepts at work and in their everyday life; Staff are designated to convene the Inter-Departmental Green Committee to coordinate environmental practices; Inductive environmental training is provided to newly appointed staff to promote the awareness on waste reduction and recycling; Facilities management team continually explores new initiatives and measures by organizing site visits to other C&I premises and exchanging ideas with experienced peers. Results and Achievements Comprehensive suite of materials being recovered: paper, metals, plastics, glass, toner cartridges, rechargeable batteries, fluorescent lamps, etc. Through source separation, over 67 tonnes of materials are successfully recovered annually for the two buildings. 6
