It s been a profitable Bankers Trust strategy since our founding in Headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, Bankers Trust is the largest privately held community bank in the state, with assets exceeding $3.6 billion. Banking is our business, and we work very hard to excel at what we do. Our mission defines our work we seek reasonable profit, ethically earned. Three guiding principles integrity, community and inclusion tell us how our work is to be done. Our nearly 100-year history has demonstrated that we are stronger when individuals and organizations, both business and civic, know they can rely on our integrity and partnership. We seek inclusion within Bankers Trust because we believe differences feed our capacity to prosper. We choose community engagement because we recognize that, along with thousands of others, we are the communities we serve. Internally, community engagement reinforces a sense of ownership and civic responsibility. It allows our more than 500 exceptional employees to reach beyond banking relationships and form new connections as neighbors and friends. These connections help us build a larger, more diverse and more loyal customer base. If we believe in community engagement, how could charitable giving be anything less than a corporate priority? Annually, Bankers Trust allocates more than $1 million to community projects and our employees devote more than 14,000 volunteer hours to local causes. We believe this level of engagement is one reason our assets grew 32 percent and our earnings doubled in the last five years. The Bank s charitable giving program is driven by three objectives: Community Development We support economic development, affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization and community services targeted to low income individuals and families. Culture and Inclusion We promote organizations and activities that enhance quality of life with an emphasis on multicultural and other inclusive initiatives. Employee interests We seek to maximize employees impact on our communities as they volunteer or make personal financial contributions. The following pages highlight these objectives in action. If we believe in community engagement, how could charitable giving be anything less than a corporate priority?

4 Bankers Trust is in the business of helping our neighbors and friends move toward their dreams. Oakridge Neighborhood Services Once upon a time, there were 17 acres of parklike land in urban Des Moines waiting to be put to good use. Those acres became the Oakridge Neighborhood, a donor-funded organization providing affordable housing to families needing a secure, safe place to live. The intent was always to move these families toward self-sufficiency and self-reliance, but to meet that goal the neighborhood required more than just places to live. It needed a basis for cultural adaptation, childcare and education for all ages from preschool through adulthood. And that s how Oakridge s Neighborhood Services came to be. The foundation it has been building since the mid-1970s has made Oakridge a true community where, as Chief Executive Officer Teree Caldwell-Johnson proudly states, Families thrive and children succeed. Like many other urban communities, the Oakridge Neighborhood includes people from many countries, many backgrounds and varied expectations. Nearly 80 percent of the residents of Oakridge come to us from countries where life is very different from life in this country or this city, said Caldwell. These newcomers want to succeed here, but they benefit greatly as would we in their situations from help in taking first steps toward their dreams. Bankers Trust is in the business of helping our neighbors and friends move toward their dreams. We know that young people striving to succeed in high school and in college will one day be the people who become bankers or entrepreneurs or corporate executives. Many will want to buy real estate, borrow funds for business transactions or plan their retirement and all such aspirations are good for bankers and for our communities. These are good reasons for our nearly 20-year partnership with Oakridge Neighborhood Services and, in particular, our support of its Youth Summer Employment Program (YSEP). We are the major funder of Oakridge YSEP, a ten-week summer youth employment experience that involves young people from middle school through college by engaging them in academics, employment, career exploration, community engagement and self-directed service learning. Mondays through Thursdays, participants engage in classroom enrichment activities in the morning and work experiences in the afternoon. The work experiences are paid, and they are designed to provide strong models, deepen participants belief in their own potential, and help them begin realistic paths toward a rewarding future. Fridays are reserved for widening horizons and deepening understanding of what it means to be a lifelong learner and a good citizen. Bankers Trust personnel offer relevant instruction in social expectations about money and hands-on help with learning how to manage a paycheck, pay for continuing education and save for the future. These are hard lessons for everyone, but they are particularly challenging for young people whose families have had no disposable income. We have been well rewarded for our investment in education at Oakridge. Caldwell-Johnson credits us with helping to equip more than 500 young people to succeed in our community, and several Oakridge YSEP graduates have returned from college to intern at Bankers Trust.
5 Music University Meet Kuuku Saah, a Securities Trading Officer with Bankers Trust, and you ll meet passion personified. In the midst of studying for advanced investment certifications, he ll be the first to tell you he loves his work and he loves playing the guitar. These two loves led him to seek our support of Music University, an October event offered through the Des Moines Music Coalition. Held at Drake University, it is an opportunity for professionals and amateurs composers, performers, arrangers, producers and technicians from around the state and the country to come together, share experiences and learn skills necessary to succeed in the business of music. The programs are a creative mix of renowned speakers from the music field, small group conversations, instructional sessions that focus on practical financial strategies and opportunities to listen and perform together in a variety of public settings. Chris Ford, a versatile performer with an international tour to his credit, is the current producer of Music University. He can manage cash flow and stage impressive public events while building his artistry at the piano. Kuuku has been such a friend to Music U, he said. And Bankers Trust has been helpful in terms of funding the event and providing leadership for the financial management segments. Bankers Trust concerns itself with such a venture in part because an employee we value cares deeply about it. Also, like other civic and corporate leaders in Central Iowa, we believe attracting and retaining young professionals depends on the quality of life our area affords, and the arts are a critical measure of that quality. As a recent Bravo Greater Des Moines study showed, Saah elaborated, it s amazing how much culture and the arts contribute to our economic well-being. Music of all kinds has a strong foothold here, and teamwork across our community will make Central Iowa a cultural hub for musicians. Kuuku Saah wants music to thrive in Greater Des Moines, and so do we. We believe attracting and retaining young professionals depends on the quality of life our area affords, and culture and the arts are a critical measure of that quality.
6 As one of the United Way Chair s Corporations (one of our top 20 corporate donors), Bankers Trust is mission-critical to achieving our bold community goals. Mary Sellers Executive Director United Way of Central Iowa The United Way United Way of Central Iowa is one of our oldest relationships it began with our founding in 1917 and remains one of our strongest. Annually, Bankers Trust joins nearly 600 other companies and organizations and a total of 40,000 donors to raise nearly $30 million for the annual United Way campaign. The money matters because United Way of Central Iowa is working to achieve three ambitious goals by 2020: raise high school graduation rates in Central Iowa s 22 school districts to 95 percent, increase the percentage of Central Iowans who are financially self-sufficient to 75 percent, and increase Central Iowa s score on the Gallup Healthways Well-being Index to 64.5 percent. Executive Director Mary Sellers described the value of our involvement this way, As one of United Way Chair s Corporations (one of our top twenty corporate donors), Bankers Trust is mission-critical to achieving our bold community goals. Bankers Trust s support is wide and deep. It begins with Suku Radia, President and CEO, and Jennifer Bryant, Senior Vice President Human Resources, and reaches from our Employee Events Committee to touch every employee. Our contribution from the Bank and employees totals nearly $500,000 each year and employee participation registers at nearly 100 percent. Bankers Trust regularly ranks #1 in per capita giving and overall participation rate among the Chair s Corporations. Leveraging our contributions with those of other donors is paying dividends. Due to partnership with United Way chapters across the country, more Central Iowa students are graduating high school prepared for gainful employment or further education; more families are living in safe, secure housing and are becoming financially self-sufficient; and more adults and children are benefiting from healthier diets and better access to healthcare services. These friends and neighbors need United Way, and United Way needs us. We are proud to do our part.
7 Message from the President and CEO I consider publicly outlining Bankers Trust s financial performance in our annual reports a privilege, but I value even more the opportunity to tell the stories behind the numbers. In this communication it is my pleasure to share my perspective on the Bank s charitable giving. Missions are organizational, but guiding principles ultimately are personal. Bankers Trust s mission reasonable profit, ethically earned makes room for giving, but it is our shared commitment to integrity, community and inclusion that make our engagement in the communities we serve an integral part of our lives. You have examined Bankers Trust s corporate rationale for charitable giving, and you know the criteria upon which our choices are based. You have read the stories behind three of our partners, but perhaps the most important message is this: there are many more stories to tell. Real commitment can never be anything but intensely personal. My own story has led me to believe deeply in the value of paying my civic rent. We all are standing on the shoulders of others, and we owe our communities the support they require to be the foundation for others growth. It s a story that begins in 1971 when I arrived in the United States at the age of 17 to attend college. I fully expected to get an education at Iowa State and then return to my homeland in Uganda. My father, his father, and his father before him had been highly successful businessmen there, and I was to assume their legacy upon my return. While I was in Ames, a dictator named Idi Amin evicted the entire Indian population from Uganda. My father and mother fled to London with nothing more than they could carry, and I literally became a man without a country, penniless and lost. The people who saw me through this painful time are numerous. The faculty extended their arms to me, inspired me to be focused, and encouraged me to believe in myself and to imagine a promising future in this country. A family in Des Moines invited me into their home for a summer and gave me more than they could have intended. Their lovely daughter became my wife. She is an expert rheumatologist, the mother of our three remarkable children and a far better life partner than I deserve. Missions are organizational, but core values ultimately are personal.
