LET S GO TO A MOVIE Creating a Movie Poster

WHAT DO POSTERS DO? According to the French historian Max Gallo, "for over two hundred years, posters have been displayed in public places all over the world. Visually striking, they have been designed to attract the attention of passers-by, making us aware of a political viewpoint, enticing us to attend specific events, or encouraging us to purchase a particular product or service." Early event/movie posters can be very collectable.

IN THE BEGINNING The great revolution in posters was the development of printing techniques that allowed for cheap mass production and printing. This included the technique of lithography which was invented in 1796 by the German Alois Senefelder. Lithography stone and mirror image print The invention of lithography was soon followed by chromolithography, which allowed for mass editions of posters illustrated in vibrant colors to be printed. Posters were made for everything from shows and events to every day products. Lithography Press Example of Chromolithography

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Alphonse Mucha Jules Cheret THE GREATS OF POSTER DESIGN Choose one of these artists to research. Post one of their posters to your Weebly. Include a four step critique in your post. Also write a short paragraph about who the artist was and what made him special.

FILM POSTERS Film posters have been used since the earliest public exhibitions of film. They began as outside placards listing the program of films to be shown inside the hall or movie theater. Originally, film posters were produced for use by the theaters exhibiting the film that the poster was created for. The copies of the posters were required to be returned to the distributor after the film left the theater. k

CLASSIC MOVIE POSTERS By the early 1900s, they began to feature illustrations of a film scene or an array of overlaid images from several scenes. Other posters have used artistic interpretations of a scene or even the theme of the film, represented in a wide variety of artistic styles.

CONTEMPORARY MOVIE POSTERS These posters use digital photos and editing software such as Photo shop to illustrate the film.

WHO MAKES THESE THINGS ANYWAYS? Research current movie poster artists. Pick one artist to find more information about. Post one of their movie posters to your Weebly. In the same post, give a brief bio about the artist you have chosen. Then explain why you chose this artist, and what you like about the poster you chose.

LET S MAKE OUR OWN! Write a proposal for your movie and it s poster in your notebook. Please include. Genre of the movie (Love story, Action, Sci-fi, Horror etc.) Title of the film Who will be in the movie? No celebrities, include yourself and people you know. A list of photos you will have to take to make your poster. Draw Thumbnails Draw four small pictures of the poster you want to create The purpose of drawing four is to come up with four different ideas for the whole poster You do not have to draws it perfectly! Each drawing must be around 3x4 inches

HERE IS A SAMPLE The poster on the right can help you to create the text for your poster. The poster must include everything on the sheet of instructions I give you The bottom, text rich. Portion of the poster is called the billing block. Below is a sample of what it should look like.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD POSTER DESIGN INCLUDE: Arrange the image(s) and text without a lot of busy clutter. Arrange the design and lettering to attract the attention of passersby. Consider how effective it will look next to other movie posters. Text and design should be large enough to be seen from a prescribed distance, usually 8-12 feet. Use harmonious color combinations. Design and text style must complement each other. Use a modern up-to-date art style, unless you are deliberately trying to create a poster that is mimicking an older style. The design should not detract from the impact of the words.
