1 Plants and People Bio 184 Library Database Workshop Leonard Lief Library Homepage Finding Plant Information Using the Library s Databases: Go to the Library s Website at Click on Electronic Databases Then click on the first letter of the name of database you wish to search Look for the database in the alphabetical list displayed Click on the database name to launch the database Off-Campus Access to the Library s Databases: To access the Library s databases from off-campus you will need to enter your Lehman account username and default password after clicking on the database name. Gale Virtual Reference Library A collection of electronic reference books covering everything from the arts and history to medicine and the sciences. It contains 41 medical reference sources and 55 science reference sources. Good database for background information for lab reports. Advanced Search Click on the down arrow to select Keyword (ke) from the pull down list. The * after the word soybean is a wildcard that allows us to search for both the words soybean and soybeans at the same time. 1

3 Author At the end of many articles there is a bibliography. A bibliography can help you to find more articles on your topic. An MLA style citation for the article is at the end of each article. Also, at the end of an article there can be links to related articles. Most articles have links to PDF files, which show exactly how the article appeared in the printed reference source. PDF files are similar to picture files and can take time to open and print. 3
