2 The Role of the Chair Recruitment & Selection Research has shown again and again how important the Chair is in ensuring that governing bodies work efficiently and effectively to help raise standards in their schools. This course will concentrate on what are recognised as the two key roles of the Chair in achieving this aim: Working with the Headteacher; The effective organisation and management of meetings. Trainer: Jan Jenkins These workshops have been designed for Governors throughout Bridgend County Borough Council to assist them in the processes involved in recruiting and selecting staff. By the end of the event, you will: Be familiar with your role as Governor in the recruitment & selection process; Be aware of the support available; Be able to conduct recruitment and selection in a consistent manner; Be aware of the legislative framework surrounding recruitment and selection and in particular discrimination and its consequences; Have sufficient knowledge and confidence to enable you to recruit and select successfully. 3 School Data Workshop Using Data The aim of the workshop is to ensure that governors have a basic awareness of their rights and responsibility. The workshop will cover key information for schools about the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information. Delegates will undertake a variety of exercises throughout the session. The Data Protection element includes an introduction to the 8 principles of the Act, and will also go into more detail about requests for personal information and the ICO s powers. The Freedom of Information section addresses what constitutes a valid Freedom of Information request and covers exemptions under the Act. The use of systematic data analysis is a significant issue for Governors. It is a central part of the Common Inspection Framework and School Effectiveness Framework. This training course has been specifically designed to give governing bodies a practical understanding of the need to effectively analyse data which leads to school improvement and raising standards. This course will: Help support the understanding of Governors in fulfilling their role in the Common Inspection Framework specifically key question 3; Focus on the relationship between the Governing Body, school leadership and Local Authority school support services in using data to support School improvement. 4 Induction for Governors Governors responsibilities for Looked After Children (LAC) In this module we will consider the roles and responsibilities of governors and that of the governing body as a whole. This module will consider: The strategic role; The critical friend; The accountability of governors; The code of conduct for governors. Trainer: Jan Jenkins This training is particularly relevant of the link governor with responsibilities for LAC but all governors are welcome. The training session will include: Information regarding Looked After Children; Local Authority and school responsibilities including LAC designated teachers; Specific responsibilities for governors for Looked After Children. Aims: To ensure school governors develop an understanding of the Looked After System; To inform/raise awareness of school governors responsibilities regarding Looked After Children within their school; Outline the roles of responsibilities of the Designated Teachers for Looked After Children. 5 Finance & LMS Handling Complaints Child Protection This session will give Governors an awareness of the financial implications of Local Management of Schools (LMS) and their role within the financial framework. Items covered will include: Local Authority Funding; Local Management of Schools (LMS); Bridgend s financial scheme for schools; Budget preparation and monitoring. Trainer: Judith Tutssel This module will provide Governors with a general understanding and awareness of their role in dealing with general complaints about the school and any community facilities or services the school provides. The objectives are for Governors to understand: The legal framework and the role of a school complaints policy; The process of developing/amending the school complaints policy; The content of a school complaints policy and the requirement to publish the policy; The relationship between school complaints and appeals; The procedure for dealing with complaints. Trainer: Gary Winston All schools have a statutory duty to exercise their functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and it is recommended that all governors attend child protection awareness training. The awareness training will include: Legal context; School s responsibilities; Categories of abuse and signs and symptoms; Child protection process including referral. Registration enables us to make all the necessary catering, seating and copying arrangements for each training session. It also ensures that we are able to contact all attendees in advance in the rare event that a course is postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
