1 Products, equipment and their use for styling and finishing hair - (1 of 4) Every salon will have its own preferences relating to the range of products it carries and the tools and equipment to be used on its clients. As a rough guide it is expected that salons will have sufficient materials to allow hairdressers to deal with different hair and scalp types and conditions. For example, products for: greasy hair and/or scalp dry hair and/or scalp normal hair and/or scalp dandruff affected scalp. There will also be products designed to create different styling effects. The salon is likely to provide the more expensive equipment and most salons are equipped with hand held hair dryers and heated styling equipment. Products There is a huge choice in the ranges of products that are available for use when styling and finishing hair. Your own salon may have a full range of products from a particular manufacturer. These products may be different to the products used by the salon down the road, but often have similar features and benefits. The most frequently used styling and finishing products are: Heat protectors Sprays Mousse Creams Gels Lotions Serums It is, however, expected that hairdressers provide their own styling tools, eg, combs, brushes. Remember: All tools must be cleaned and sterilised/ disinfected before using them on a client. What is the benefit of this for the client? Notes. While salons may use products from different manufacturers, all the products will generally do a similar job. Tools for styling and finishing hair These should include: a range of combs and brushes designed to achieve different effects The choice of tool often depends on: The length of hair The type of hair The texture of hair The density of hair The amount of volume and movement required In addition Your own personal preference You may have to provide your own tools when working in the salon, or your salon owner may provide them for you.

Natural bristle Often has a wooden handle and is made of pig or hog bristle. This is similar in composition to human hair. They can be used for smoothing hair or radial brushes can be used to induce curl and movement for blow drying. Flat Back These often have a plastic Brush handle and bristles. They can be used for blow drying. Root lift can only be achieved with a flat back brush if the hair is short. Vent brush These have a plastic handle and bristles. They can be used to dry short straight hair and will introduce texture and movement by creating an uneven finish to the hair. Combs Combs are available in a variety of sizes. Ideally combs should be made of vulcanite or plastic. They should not be made of nylon or metal as this type of comb can damage the hair. Wide toothed comb Dressing out comb Tail comb Afro rake/ comb Wide spaced teeth best used for combing through wet or long hair Medium spaced teeth for styling and finishing blow drys use on long hair. Tightly spaced teeth with a tail at one end. Can be used for sectioning hair during styling. Very wide spaced teeth used for detangling curly hair. Radial brushes These come in a variety of materials and sizes. They are ideally suited to blow drying hair of any length to induce curl, root lift and movement. Notes.

The use of electrical equipment for drying and styling hair falls within the remit of the Electricity at Work Regulations. Remember: It is your responsibility to ensure that any faulty equipment that you find in your workplace is removed from use, labelled as faulty and reported to a relevant person. Crimpers Diffuser Nozzle Hand held in various types and sizes. Used to shape hair into a variety of wave formations An attachment for a hand-held dryer, used to control the flow of air and diffuse the heat. An attachment for a hand-held dryer, used to direct the flow of air when blow drying and finger drying. Hand held dryers Air styler Curling tongs Hot brush Lightweight powerful dryers for blow drying or finger drying Lightweight hand held dryer with brush attached Hand held in various sizes, types and shapes. Used to add curl to hair. Hand held in various sizes and types. Used to add curl to hair. Notes. Staighteners Hand held in various types and sizes. Used to flatten or straighten curly hair.
