Women outnumbered men, 55 percent to 45 percent. The average age of Fairgoers is 33. More than 446,893 frugal Fairgoers took advantage of free or discount admission promotions offered throughout the 2014 OC Fair including Super Pass, weekly community donation drives (We Care Wednesday), Kids Days, Seniors Days, sponsor-related promotions, Rise & Shine and more. 5 OC FAIR ADMISSION AND PARKING Super Pass* The OC Fair Super Pass is valid for one (1) admission each day of the 2015 OC Fair (July 17-August 16, open Wednesday-Sunday) for the owner of the pass only. This pass is non-transferrable. Children 5 and younger are free every day. General (ages 13-59) $35 Senior (ages 60+) $28 Youth (ages 6-12) $28 Single-Day Admission Prices* General (ages 13-59) $12 Seniors (ages 60+) $7 $5 on Seniors Day (Friday) Youth (ages 6-12) $7 Free on Kids Day (Thursday) Children 5 and younger are free every day *Additional admission may be required for shows in the Pacific Amphitheatre, The Hangar, Action Sports Arena and other special events. 8 HEADLINE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE OC FAIR The OC Fair is proud to offer Fairgoers three complexes within its gates featuring premiere entertainment for Fairgoers including original concerts, action sports and live performances. Pacific Amphitheatre Under the Orange County summer night sky, Fairgoers can rock out with artists including The Offspring, Fifth Harmony, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, The Band Perry, Dirty Heads, Charli XCX and more. With 8,300 fixed seats, the Pacific Amphitheatre offers an intimate concert experience. All Pacific Amphitheatre concert tickets include free Fair admission for before and after the show the same day as the show plus a free ride on the La Grande Wheel in the Carnival after the concert. The Hangar In this aviation hangar-type building with a 50-foot arched ceiling, Fairgoers can enjoy the best in tribute bands covering pop and rock favorites such as The Eagles, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Black Eyed Peas, Metallica and Brooks & Dunn, in addition to original music from Aer and Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez. See page 8 for schedule. Action Sports Arena If it will cause adrenaline to flow or crowds to cheer, it will be featured in the Action Sports Arena. Action-packed lineups include traditional and motor home demolition derbies, motorcycle speedway, rodeo, monster trucks, mixed martial arts and the new-for-2015 Cavallo Equestrian Arts Ma Ceo. 12 125 YEARS OF THE OC FAIR The OC Fair is celebrating 125 years in 2015 with the theme One Big Party. Since its quaint beginnings in 1890, the OC Fair has grown to a 23-day extravaganza that welcomes more than 1.3 million guests every summer. Big, The Beat Goes On, Let s Eat!, Home Sweet Home, Come & Get It, Summer Starts Here, One Big Party Home Sweet Home The OC Fair has called several cities in Orange County home over its 125 years. It started as a horse race with a few exhibits in Santa Ana in In 1911 it was moved to Anaheim and themed Anaheim Carnival. In 1917, after the Orange County Farm Bureau was formed, the Fair moved to Huntington Beach. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Fair called Santa Ana and Pomona home. In the 1940s, it returned to Anaheim and took a hiatus during World War II. In 1949, the Fair found its current home at the former Santa Ana Army Air Base when the State of California authorized the purchase of the base to be utilized as the fairgrounds for the newly formed 32nd District Agricultural Association. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa, which included the fairgrounds, was incorporated. Dates The OC Fair has grown from a three-day community event to a month-long summer must-do. From 1890 through 1971, the Fair was three to six days long and was held in either fall or summer. By 1972, the Fair was a standard summer event that had extended its dates to include 10 days of activities. For the 1987 and 1988 fairs, guests could enjoy 11 consecutive days of fun and from , they had 12 days. From 1992 to 2002, the OC Fair hosted 17 consecutive days of events and in 2003 extended its dates to 21 days and closed on Mondays. More Than Just A Fair The OC Fair has offered a variety of entertainment beyond concerts over the years including record-breaking Ferris wheel rides, cattle drives down city streets and beaches, pageants and more. Here s a short list of some of the special events the OC Fair has hosted: 1897: The opening day of the Fair was coined Ladies Day and all women were admitted free. 1906: The Fair celebrated the completion of the Pacific Electric Railway from Los Angeles to Santa Ana with floats and various products of the county on display. 1922: The automobile was a featured exhibit. 1936: The Greatest Historical Parade recounted the romantic story of California with floats and more than 1,000 costumed people and 500 decorated horses participating. 1950s: Special events included daily ostrich races, pogo stick races, helicopter rides and a wild animal circus. 1963: A newfangled push button phone was presented by Pac Bell. 1969: A scale model of Apollo 11 was featured. 1972: The first fair stamp in the nation became a reality in 1972 and a special post office was set up at the Fair. 1984: The Fair became bigger than life when an inflatable, 72-foot King Kong towered over the fairgrounds. 1986: An inflatable 50-foot Statue of Liberty wowed guests as President Reagan and Governor Deukmejian paid visits to the Fair. 1988: Skydivers dropped in on opening day. 1991: Dr. Norm Gray, an entomologist from University of California at Davis, performed daily in the arena, covering his body with pheromones (the perfume of the queen bee), resulting in several hundred thousand bees covering his body while he played the clarinet in the key of B. 1993: The Fair marks the 100th anniversary of the Ferris wheel with a record-breaking 38-day Ferris wheel ride. 1994: An authentic cattle drive down Fairview Road was staged with more than 125 riders and 250 head of cattle. 2001: The Fair introduces adrenaline junkies to the Orange Crush Demolition Derby. 2007: The Fair showcased two cattle drives one on the sandy shores of Huntington Beach as part of the US Open of Surfing and in the other some 300 head of cattle were led down the streets of Costa Mesa from Fairview Park to the OC Fair. 2008: The Fair partners with the Maloof Money Cup to offer three days of skateboarding and BMX competitions in the Action Sports Arena. 2009: The Fair offers Fairgoers a self-produced, interactive exhibit called Al s Brain A 3-D Journey Through The Human Brain with Weird Al Yankovic. The Fair adds a twist to the traditional demolition derby by using Class-C motorhomes instead of cars. 2011: Fair sets a new attendance record with 1,401,267 guests over 23 days July 15-August 14. The 2011 Fair was themed Let s Eat! 2012: The Fair turns the popular demolition pink for breast cancer awareness and the first all-female derby called Damsels of Destruction Demolition Derby. 2013: The Pacific Amphitheatre saw its highest grossing season ever without lawn seating. The Fair also introduces the OC Fair Foodies, a collection of food-related costumed characters that roamed the property and accompanying plush toys available for purchase. The Fairs Foodies included Olivia (orange), Cornelius (roasted corn), Arturo (churro), Carl (cotton candy), Spike (carrot), Mike (baconwrapped turkey leg), Dip (corn dog), Clemon (lemon), Scoop (ice cream cone) and Slim (slice of bacon). 2014: The Fair saw a record 3 days with more than 80,000 people in attendance. Catch the exotic stilt walking Dragon Knights, be serenaded by acapella sensation Side Effect, feel the beat with Street Drum Corp or watch in awe the acrobatic feats of the Zu Zu African Acrobats (July 17-August 2 only). The OC Fair is also welcoming back the colorful, costumed characters designed after iconic Fair food introduced in Arturo (Churro), Carl (Cotton Candy), Cornelius (Corn on the Cob), Olivia (Orange) and Scoop (Ice Cream) will be featured as bigger-than-life costumed characters roaming the OC Fair daily. Plaza Pacifica (New for 2015) Welcome to Plaza Pacifica, the OC Fair s newest destination for shopping and entertainment. A designated smoking area is located near the Paradise Cigars vendor booth. Fairenheit 32 The new Fairenheit 32 at the 2015 OC Fair offers Fairgoers the chance to cool off this summer as they skate around an actual ice rink or check out beautiful ice art in the Ice Museum. Skate rentals are an additional fee and Fairgoers are not permitted to bring their own skates. Access to the Ice Museum is free with Fair admission. Plaza Stage Home nightly to the hilarity of Hypnotist Mark Yuzuik and the artistry of Sand Artist Joe Castillo plus community entertainment during the day. Plaza Shopping Village New this year, this casual, open-air shopping experience features select vendors from the Orange County Market Place offering inside the Fair gates a slice of the popular Market Place open on weekends outside the annual OC Fair. Pacific Amphitheatre New this year, ticketholders for events in the Pacific Amphitheatre can enter the premiere venue directly from the Fair through the newly constructed lobby and entrance located near the Green Gate that leads into the top back portion of the seating area. Pacific Amphitheatre The OC Fair s premier concert venue offering an intimate and unique experience to enjoy rock bands, pop stars and comedians. New this year, ticketholders can enter directly from inside the Fair through the newly constructed lobby in the Plaza Pacifica that connects at the top center portion of the seating area. See page 7 for this year s full schedule. Two designated smoking areas are located in specific areas in the concourse. Main Mall Featuring food vendors, The Hangar, The Courtyard, competitive entries exhibit galleries, shopping and guest services. The Hangar Daily Fairgoers can enjoy free community entertainment including local bands performing live and local dance troupes. At night, concertgoers can rock out to hit tribute bands and original bands. Fairgoers with a ticket can enjoy a seat inside The Hangar during the evening shows and other Fairgoers can enjoy from the outside through the large bay doors of the building. OC Promenade Located between the Crafts & Woodworking and Visual Arts Gallery, the OC Promenade features culinary competitive entries, cooking demonstrations and foodrelated exhibits and makeshops. The Promenade Stage also features live music nightly at 8 p.m. from Heavy Mellow, Kris Doron, Flamingo Surf, Oui 3 and Danny Maika (Performance dates vary, see the online schedule for specifics.) See the Food at the Fair section on page 19 for more details on culinary events. Crafts & Woodworking Gallery The beautiful handcrafted work of amateur and professional artisans from throughout California will be on display daily and various free demonstrations held daily. Fairgoers can check out delicate lace work, intricate woodworking, and other creative handmade item plus the Resonate: Hand-Crafted Stringed Instruments Exhibition. Visual Arts Gallery Award-winning photography, paintings, multi-media and the fine arts will be on display throughout the Fair in addition to the various fine arts demonstrations and makeshops offered free daily. Printmaker Carleton Christy will be the featured artist with his exhibition All Across the City and free printmaking demonstrations. From July 17-26, the OC Fair will put on display selection from its permanent collection of award-winning fine art for the Competition to Collection exhibit. The Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibit scheduled for July 29-August 2 will feature the beautiful art of this Japanese formal flower arranging. Then from August 5-16, the Fair will feature a Plein Air Painting Exhibit displaying paintings created outdoors of outdoor sights. Before the exhibit, members of the Southern California Plein Air Painters Association will offer a Plein Air Painting Festival on August 2. The Wine Courtyard Taste award-winning wines by the glass or taste every day of the Fair. On weekends wine lovers can sign-up for special seminars focused on specific varietals. Each paid seminar includes eight tastes, a commemorative 2015 OC Fair wine glass, a 2015 OC Fair Wine Awards Book and snacks. Carnival, Festival & Parade of Products Hundreds of commercial exhibitors selling everything from hats to home improvement tools to products that can solve everyday issues. Two buildings and a breezeway feature new and favorite products only found at fairs and festivals. The Fountain Built in 2012, the OC Fair s own water fountain offers a fun way for Fairgoers of all ages to cool down on a hot summer day. Family Fair Way / Green Gate Area Featuring food vendors, Explorium: Destination Kids, Russell Brothers Circus, Bubble Rollers, petting zoo, Kiddie Carnival and the Sky Ride s west end pick-up/ drop-off point. A designated smoking area is located inside the Green Gate patron entrance. Explorium: Destination Kids Fairgoers of all ages can enjoy free exhibits, hands-on activities and free entertainment like the Magic of Frank Thurston, Prehistoric Pets and Dino Dig Sandbox. In The Good, The Bad & The Unbelievable exhibit, Fairgoers can see which creepy crawlies fall into the good, bad and unbelievable categories. Additionally, contests just for children are held every other hour and the One Big Party eating contest sponsored by OC Fair food vendors is held nightly at 6:30 p.m. Young Fairgoers can make wooden swords and princess hats in the free craft area, discover new information on outer space and climb aboard a Mars Rover in the new The Space Place exhibit or play with puppets and blocks inspired by the medieval era in The Castle Corner. Kiddie Carnival Here is where little daredevils can feed their need for spinning, twirling and just pure fun with rides all geared towards smaller riders including the Dizzy Dragon, Mini Bumper Cars and Pelican Splash. Plus, all riders can hitch a ride down the Fair on the Sky Ride from its west end pick-up/drop-off point. Russell Brothers Circus This family circus delights Fairgoers young and old with winsome acts. The circus is unique in the creative way it uses the performers and audience instead of animals. Multiple performances daily plus children can get into the circus act during the Let s Play contest daily. Great American Petting Zoo (New location for 2015) Fairgoers can get up close to cute critters like baby goats, llamas, pigs and more for free. Snacks for the critters are an additional cost.
