Computer Hints Please do NOT turn the computers off after class If the previous instructor has not log off the computer you can Go to the Start menu and then Log Off, just like you would do so yourself If a message tells you someone else is logged on but you aren t on his/her desktop, select Switch User or Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete And then log in as usual 2
Computer Hints cont. If the computer doesn t seem to be in the right configuration Check that the document camera is off Hit the windows button and the letter P at the same time and choose the duplicate option If the SmartBoard is not working Check that all the cables, namely the USB cable from the board to computer, are plugged in Check that the presentation mode is duplicate If all else fails, call IT (x27548) or ETC (x63600) 3
Turning it on At the bottom, right hand corner of the board is the Power button It will be red or amber colored Push it and it will turn green, then the board will turn on It is best to log on to the computer before the screen Side light Power button 4
Side Light The side light is on the lower, right hand side of the screen If the screen is off, the light will be off or red Once you ve turned on the screen, the side light should turn green If the side light fails to turn green and the screen is showing the SmartBoard logo, there is no signal coming from the computer Check that the Document Camera is off Check that the USB cable from the board is plugged into the computer If all else fails, call IT (x27548) or ETC (x63600) 5
If the Screen doesn t work If the SmartBoard still doesn t show your computer screen Check the input setting It should be VGA-1 for the desktop Check that the Document Camera is off Check that the USB cable from the board is plugged into the computer Check the presentation settings on the computer Press the windows button + P then select Duplicate 6
The following does not apply in room PL 161 7
Pen Tray At the bottom of the SmartBoard is the pen tray with 4 colored markers, an eraser, and two buttons The buttons are a keyboard (left) and mouser right-click (right) The pen slots are colored Lift a pen and you can write in an open program (PPT, web) or a SmartInk page will open The color of the marker isn t important, the slot on the tray is what color the ink will be Whichever item was pick up from the tray last is what the board thinks you are using 8
Writing Only use a SmartBoard pen or your finger No whiteboard markers! Pick up a pen and write on the SmartBoard or use your finger after taking a pen out of its slot The ink will be the color of the pen slot, not necessarily the pen You can write on a Word document, PowerPoint, or in a web browser If you don t have something open to write in, a SmartDocument will open to capture your pen strokes 9
Calibration If your writing isn t where your pen goes, you need to orient the board Press the keyboard and mouse buttons, at the same time, on the pen tray An array of targets will appear on the screen Using your finger or a pen, tap the center of each target Protip: use the pen and drag it to the center 10
Saving At the end of a power point presentation Go to menu Select end of show Answer yes to adding notes File > Save I recommend Save as so you have a clean version of the presentation for later use 11
Erasing The eraser is the central item in the pen tray To use it lift the eraser and wipe it across the text you no longer want You can use the flat of your hand to erase, if you have taken the eraser out of the pen tray To erase large amounts quickly, take the eraser in a circle around what you are erasing then tap the eraser in the center of the circle All the ink in the circle should disappear 12
Turning Off Push the now green power button A new window will pop up Push the power button a second time The board will now be turned off If the board is left on the blue screen will wear out the light in the projector 13
Laptop To connect your laptop use the cable bundle next to the board Do NOT change the connections on the computer tower or monitor! If you need a different connector, contact the ETC equipment check out at x63600 Cables to connect a laptop 14
