14 1 Refurbishing wooden windows The problem: cracking paint A typical weathering problem with wooden windows: the paint cracks, peels away and the wood weathers. The goal is a uniform sanding pattern with clean transitions between the wood and the old paint. Step 1 Using an orbital sander set at high speed, the old paint and the damaged areas are vigourously sanded with coarse sandpaper. To sand the edges and corners, a sanding pad in the shape of a flat iron is used. Step 2 For the desired fine sanding pattern, the areas are again sanded using fine sandpaper. It is important that the transitions between the wood and the old paint are cleanly sanded. 14

15 Exterior work Wooden windows Festool guarantees longevity. The result The window frame displays a very fine, clean sanding pattern and is perfectly prepared for a new undercoat. This result is quickly and easily attained by using a Festool DTS 400 EQ, a light, hand-held orbital sander with a sanding pad in the shape of a flat iron, and Festool Brilliant P40, P80 and P120 sandpaper. Many Festool electric power tools have already been in use for 30 years or even longer. This is because of their robust design that prevents them from wearing out quickly. 16 2 Refurbishing metal railings The problem: rusty metal With the passage of time, rust always appears. And rust leads to holes that degrade the quality of any new coat of paint. A high material removal capacity rotary sander will guarantee a flat, even surface. Step 1 The old paint and the rusted areas are removed at high speed using a sander with coarse sandpaper. Without much effort, the rotating sanding motions quickly remove the material. Step 2 After all the depressions have been removed, the railing is then sanded using fine sandpaper. The fine metal dust is efficiently removed right at the work area almost 100 % of it. 16

17 Exterior work Metal railings Festool thinks in terms of systems. The result All the rusted areas and depressions on the railing are removed. The railing is sanded down to bare metal and prepared for a new undercoat. This is done using a Festool RAS E rotary sander and the proper sandpaper, which is Festool Saphir with grit sizes P50, P80 and P120. The metal particles are removed using a Festool CTL MIDI mobile dust extractor. There is a perfect tool for every job. And behind each tool, there is a perfectly matched system from the sanding pad that is individually selected for the task, to the high capacity abrasive with a long service life, and all the way to the perfect extraction of dust and waste. 18 3 Refurbishing old shutters The problem: weathered slats The many small gaps between the slats make this work time-consuming. In spite of that, it is worthwhile to prepare a clean surface. The perfect tool for this is the RO 125 FEQ with a sanding pad for slats. Step 1 To sand off the cracked paint, the geardriven eccentric sander is set for coarse sanding, and then used at low speed after coarse sandpaper is installed. The special sanding pad easily gets between the slats. Step 2 For the fine sanding, the switch is simply set to the fine sanding position and the coarse sandpaper is replaced with fine sandpaper. So that the edges are not damaged when they are sanded, a protector is installed. 18

19 Exterior work Shutters Festool gives you three in one. The result The old paint is cleanly sanded off between the slats and the shutter is ready for the next step. The sanding was done with the ROTEX RO 125 FEQ gear-driven eccentric sander, which can be switched between coarse and fine sanding. When combined with the DX 93 E along with the matched slat sanding pad, all the work on the shutters be done using electric power tools. Particularly suitable for this task are the Festool Cristal P40 and P80 sandpapers. One tool for three applications: coarse sanding, fine sanding and polishing if necessary. This saves a great deal of time when working because, by using the Festool ROTEX, you do not change tools you simply switch to another setting. 22 1 Refurbishing radiators The problem: damaged radiators Time leaves its mark even on such longlasting components such as radiators. To refurbish them, a great deal of timeconsuming detail work must be done, which also requires a great deal of effort. Having a sanding pad that fits perfectly to the heating tubes is very helpful... Step 1 To be able to efficiently sand the damaged areas on the heating tubes, a profile sanding pad that perfectly fits the tubes is required. Using the D I Y profile sanding pad kit, it only takes you a few moments to make a custom pad to suit the profile of your heating tube. The sanding that is done is clearly faster than any sanding that would be done manually. Step 2 After high speed sanding with coarse sandpaper, a P80 fine grit paper is installed. Here too, valuable time and effort is saved here because the sanding pad perfectly fits the profile of the radiator. 22

The result In just minutes, without having to do any time-consuming detail work, the radiator is ready for a new undercoat. This saving in time is repeated for each additional radiator thanks to the Festool D I Y profile sanding pad kit, the Festool LS 130 EQ linear sander and the Cristal sandpaper in grit sizes P40 and P80. 24 2 Preparing walls and ceilings The problem: high ceilings It would be so easy to sand walls and ceilings if it were always possible to work on a scaffold. In practice, however, even ladders are often cumbersome. The solution here is a long-reach sander that can be fitted together to suit the height of the ceiling. Step 1 After filling the seams and screw holes, the surfaces are sanded using a combined long-reach and short-reach sander. The surfaces are sanded at medium speed with a rather fine sandpaper because the sander is very powerful. Step 2 For perfect surfaces, sanding is then carried out using P180 sandpaper up to the edges and in the corners. Thanks to the mobile dust extractor operating in the background, the tool lightly adheres to the surface and can then be easily guided with little effort. 24

26 3 Refurbishing wooden doors The problem: large areas that need to be sanded Anyone who wants to refurbish old doors cleanly and with high quality results has to go through many sanding and painting steps. Combined with the relatively large surfaces, this means a lot of time and effort. Large amounts of the finest paint and wood dust are created that go everywhere in the room. Step 1 The paint is sanded using an eccentric sander with a tall stroke. The large material removal capacity is beneficial and, together with the overlapping sanding motions, a flawless surface is obtained. The dust that is created is immediately removed thanks to the mobile dust extractor. Step 2 After the first sanding pass with a rigid pad, a softer pad is now installed and combined with fine sandpaper. The advantages of the smooth sanding of the eccentric sander are now clear. A first class surface without visible spiral marks! 26
