3 Objectives of the framework Meet skills shortages To contribute to the tackling of the intermediate skills gaps in the UK, by expanding our Print Apprenticeship numbers to create a skilled workforce, whilst at the same time retaining traditional handcrafted skills. Apprentices will have transferable skills, gained as a result of both academic study and practical on-thejob experience. Create a diverse workforce To attract new recruits into the Print Industry from a range of diverse backgrounds to address current skills gaps in the industry and to increase the number of previously unrepresented group (females, ethnic minorities and those with a disability) It also aims to meet the specific challenges of an ageing workforce. Develop existing workforce To provide opportunities for existing staff in the Print Industry to upskill and equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the many challenges facing the industry so that they can respond effectively to the changes in developing new products, new markets, technological advances and legal and environmental requirements. Develop skills and raise industry standards To provide quality, sector specific skills development for those who wish to attain the highest possible standards within their chosen occupational area and provide progressional opportunities to facilitate them working to their greatest potential. Career progression opportunities To provide career progression into employment at higher levels within the Print Industry or, for those who wish to pursue additional learning, in a Further or Higher Education arena. Apprenticeships The UK has an ageing workforce where there is a real danger that invaluable skills will be lost. Apprenticeships are an effective training tool which: Ensure business continuity Transfer skills, expertise and knowledge Ensure that workforces learn the best skills for your business Keep valuable skills within the business and in the family' 2

7 PLTS Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (England Only) PLTS are made up of 6 groups of skills, which represent the qualities and skills required for success in learning and life. 1. Independent Enquirers 2. Creative Thinkers 3. Reflective Learners Learners will have opportunities to develop, apply and assess all the PLTS elements within their chosen Apprenticeship / Advanced Apprenticeship Framework. PLTS is covered within the Coatings Industry Apprenticeship framework and its assessment must be integrated with the assessment of the main competence and knowledge units. PLTS should be integrated within the assessment criteria to explicitly recognise the application of these skills in sector related contexts PLTS are to be considered as an integral part of the planning, review, assessment and guidance cycle that is adopted as Apprentices progress through the areas of principal learning PLTS don't have to be in each individual unit 4. Team Workers 5. Self-Managers 6. Effective Participators PLTS have to be formally assessed in an Apprenticeship. For each group of skills, a focus statement sums up the range of skills alongside a a set of outcome statements to indicate the skills, behaviours and personal qualities associated with each group. Each group is distinctive and coherent but also interconnected. Learners are likely to encounter skills from several groups in any one learning experience. For example, Independent Enquirers set goals for their research with clear success criteria (Reflective Learners) and organise and manage their time and resources effectively to achieve these goals (Self-Manager). In order to acquire and develop fundamental concepts such as organising oneself, managing change, taking responsibility and perseverance, learners will need to apply skills from all six groups in a wide range of occupational and learning contexts. PLTS must be recorded as part of the Apprentice s portfolio and cross references should be made to any supporting evidence to demonstrate the effective application of the referenced elements of the skill. They take informed and wellreasoned decisions, recognising that others have different beliefs and attitudes. Identify questions to answer and problems to resolve Plan and carry out research, appreciating the consequences of decisions Explore issues, events or problems from different perspectives Analyse and evaluate information, judging its relevance and value Consider the influence of circumstances, beliefs and feelings on decisions and events Support conclusions, using reasoned arguments and evidence Creative Thinkers Individuals think creatively by generating and exploring ideas, making original connections. They try different ways to tackle a problem, working with others to find imaginative solutions and outcomes that are of value. Generate ideas and explore possibilities Ask questions to extend their thinking Connect their own and others ideas and experiences in inventive ways Question their own and others assumptions Try out alternatives or new solutions and follow ideas through Adapt ideas as circumstances change Reflective Learners Individuals evaluate their strengths and limitations, setting themselves realistic goals with criteria for success. They monitor their own performance and progress, inviting feedback from others and making changes to further their learning. Assess themselves and others, identifying opportunities and achievements Set goals with success criteria for their development and work Review progress, acting on the outcomes Invite feedback and deal positively with praise, setbacks and criticism Evaluate experiences and learning to inform future progress Communicate their learning in relevant ways for different audiences Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) 7

Self-Managers Individuals organise themselves, showing personal responsibility, initiative, creativity and enterprise with a commitment to learning and selfimprovement. They actively embrace change, responding positively to new priorities, coping with challenges and looking for opportunities. Seek out challenges or new responsibilities and show flexibility when priorities change Work towards goals, showing initiative, commitment and perseverance Organise time and resources, prioritising actions Anticipate, take and manage risks Deal with competing pressures, including personal and work-related demands Respond positively to change, seeking advice and support when needed Manage their emotions, and build and maintain relationships Effective Participators Individuals actively engage with issues that affect them and those around them. They play a full part in the life of their school, college, workplace or wider community by taking responsible action to bring improvements for others as well as themselves. Discuss issues of concern, seeking resolution where needed Present a persuasive case for action Propose practical ways forward, breaking these down into manageable steps Identify improvements that would benefit others as well as themselves Try to influence others, negotiating and balancing diverse views to reach workable solutions Act as an advocate for views and beliefs that may differ from their own.
