2 If you live in private accommodation, you ll need the following to recycle: 1. An Internal Kitchen Caddy for your food waste. 2. A 23 litre External Container for use on food waste collection days. 3. A Roll of Clear Bags for clean and dry recyclable materials. 4. A Recycling Calendar advising you of your collection dates. This can be downloaded from the website If you don t have any of these, contact the council on to obtain them, or go to the Council Cash Office at Canolfan Rheidol.

3 Food Waste is collected on a WEEKLY basis. All unpackaged food waste, whether cooked or uncooked, can go into your food waste caddy. This includes: Fruit and Vegetables Meat, bones and carcasses Fish and bones Dairy products Tea bags and coffee grounds Egg shells Any outdated food waste Bread & Pastries Any left-over food from plates Small amounts of vegetable oil Tissues, Paper towels and kitchen towels Please do not use carrier bags to line your caddy. Use newspaper or compostable cornstarch bags, which are available at the Council Cash Offices, Tourist Information Centres or various Supermarkets.

4 Recycling is collected on a WEEKLY basis. All dry recyclable material must be placed loose into the bag. Do not place separately bagged items into your recycling bag. Recycling bags are available FREE from Council Cash Offices, Tourist Information Centres and some Post Offices. Visit for more information. Paper most types including newspapers, magazines, directories, writing paper, junk mail, etc. (Wallpaper & greaseproof paper cannot be recycled.) Cardboard boxes and packets. Food tins, drinks cans, pet food tins, aerosols, aluminium foil and foil trays (Crisp packets cannot be recycled.) Cartons - juice, milk and soup waxed Cartons. Plastics - see opposite for a list of what is accepted.

5 Fizzy drink bottles and oven-ready meal trays. Bottles for milk and washing-up liquid. Food Trays, cling film, bottles for squash, mineral water and shampoo. Carrier Bags and bin liners. Margarine tubs, microwavable meal trays. Polystyrene: e.g. Yoghurt pots, foam meat or fish trays, hamburger boxes and egg cartons, vending cups, plastic cutlery. Please wash out all items that have been used as packaging for food or drink. Note that GLASS, is NOT to be placed in the clear recycling bag, please take to the nearest recycling bank. If you place glass in your clear recycling bags, they will not be collected.

6 Some recyclable materials are not collected at the kerbside at the moment, but there are recycling banks located around Aberystwyth to accept material such as Glass, Batteries, and Textiles. 7 So what can you do about the items that you can't recycle via your kerbside collection or recycling bank? The answer is don t throw it in the bin but take it to the Household Waste Site. Some of us also call it the dump or the tip - they are the same thing! Items you can recycle at the Household Waste Site include: Small electrical appliances i.e. hairdryers, razors, irons, radios and CD players. TV's and white goods such as fridges Wood, batteries, textiles, garden waste, metals, used cooking oil and much more. 8 At the end of the year, if you have unwanted items that are still in working order, instead of throwing them away how about trying to reuse them by donating to other students via the Students Guild; donate to a local charity shop in Aberystwyth; or take them to CRAFT a community reuse organisation. Don t throw away anything that can be reused for a good cause. There are numerous charity shops in Aberystwyth which will gladly take donations of clothes and household items. CRAFT is located at the train station behind Wetherspoons. It is a community Reuse organisation which will accept items including Furniture, Homeware, Electrical Items, Computers, Books, Jewellery and Clothes. Don t throw those unwanted textbooks away either, put some cash into your pocket by selling them to a second hand bookshop or a Fresher!

9 Residual waste (black bag) is collected on a FORTNIGHTLY basis on the same day as your recycling and food waste collection. These are your last resort, if there s no other way to recycle it! Check your collection day at Put your rubbish out on the morning of collection by 8am. Rubbish cannot be collected if left inside the boundary of your property, i.e. In your garden. It must be placed on the pavement to ensure collection. You could face a 100 fine from the council if rubbish becomes an issue at your property. Rubbish should not be left to accumulate in the front garden as it can attract rats/vermin and seagulls. Similarly, food spillages can attract mice, ants and cockroaches.

10 Tagged Recycling / Food Waste If your waste has been tagged (orange sticker/label), this indicates that an unacceptable item has been included or that the waste is in some way contaminated. Please check that all items in the bag are correct and remove any that are not. Why doesn t Ceredigion collect Glass? The recycling collection scheme involves some compaction of the bags collected. Glass items placed in the recycling bag would be likely to break, which poses a health hazard for the operatives who sort the recyclate when it reaches the Materials Recycling Facility. Glass should be taken to your nearest bottle bank.
