2 MISSION STATEMENT To provide excellent custodial service that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary learning, teaching, research, and working environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Quality + Service + Cleanliness = Value

3 Green Cleaning Cleaning to protect health without harming the environment. - Steve Askin Custodial Services Green Cleaning Program involves understanding the unique requirements of each UW buildings. We are continuously examining our entire cleaning process and identifying areas needing improvement. Our plans are designed to have a positive impact on cleanliness and the health and performance of occupants.

4 Cleaning Milestones/History Stopped using phenolic based disinfectants Removed butyl and ammoniated cleaners and replaced with neutral cleaners Removed ammonia from inventory and restricted bleach

5 Cleaning Milestones/History Full participation of custodians in the collection of recycled paper, including newsprint Instituted Office Bagit and recycled paper collection system Began recycling floor-cleaning pads (Discontinued in 2004)

6 Cleaning Milestones/History Started using automated dispensing system, thereby reducing large amounts of plastic and cardboard packaging, and the misuse and/or overuse of products.

7 Cleaning Milestones/History Paper towels with 40% recycled content Toilet Seat Covers with 100% recycled paper Toilet Paper with 100% recycled paper Began using high-density trash liners which use less petroleum

13 Cleaning Milestones Environmental Benefits of Micro-fiber Dust Mops UW consist of approximately 5,500,000 sq ft of hard floor surfaces Previous best technology for dust removal was oiltreated, cotton dust-mops (33oz of oil per 100 lbs of mops). Micro-fiber Mops use zero oil Laundering requires fewer oz of detergent per 100 pounds of mops reduction of detergent that reenters the environment.

14 Cleaning Milestones Efficiency Benefits of Micro-fiber Dust Mops Micro-fiber last longer, picks up mounds of dirt and grime with reduced effort. Micro-fiber Technology uses a blend of microscopic polyester and polyamide fibers which are split to create microscopic hooks which scrape up and hold dust, dirt, and grime.

We use 3M products for all above the floor cleaning: Concentrated (Green Seal Certified) Glass Cleaner Neutral Cleaner Bathroom Disinfectant Cleaner General-Purpose Cleaner We use Johnson Wax Professional products on the floor: Green Seal Certified Neutral Floor Cleaner Environmental Preferable Vectra High-Performance Floor Finish

16 Hard Floor Cleaning Tennent T3 FaST System UW has approximately 5,500,000 sq ft of hard floor surfaces. Of those, 2,000,000 are hallways UW has 33 Floor Scrubbers: 9 T3 FaST System (Shown to the left) 1 T7 FaST System (Shown below) 23 other assorted models Benefits Detergent savings Water/sewer savings Cleaner Floors Increased productivity Allows facilities to conserve natural resources and use a product that is environmentally safe; because FaST technology uses up to 70 percent less water and 90 percent less chemicals to clean; FaST Neutral and Heavy-Duty chemicals are Green Seal (GS-37) certified FaST -equipped machines automatically mix chemical and water, then inject air to create an effective, fail-safe foam solution every time Tennent T7

17 Carpeting UW has 2,257,191 square feet of carpet. Carpet can hold more than its weight in soil and can contain contaminants and allergens. Custodial Services approach to carpet care: Matting at all entrances Attempt to capture soil at the entrance ProTeam backpack Vacuums Unique suction method vacuums without stirring up dust. Air stays cleaner; operator can work without breathing unhealthy air Use on hard surface and carpet improves efficiency Picks up 99.79% of dirt allergens down to.3 micron size 4 level filtration prevents particles from being reintroduced into the indoor-air environment Ergonomic design less body stress increases efficiency by 50%

22 GS-42: Green Seal Environmental Standard for Cleaning Services GS-42 provides a certification system that facility managers and others can use to develop their own in-house greencleaning operations or to identify contract cleaning services that are environmentally responsible. GS-42 Specifies: Green chemicals, supplies, and equipment Cleaning procedures Employee training Communication with building owners and occupants Building-specific Green Cleaning Plan Compliance with on-site audits of the facilities using the program
