10 Farmers in East Trinidad obtained an ex parte injunction Monday to restrain the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and its agents from bulldozing 100 acres of farm land at Crescent Gardens, Mausica Road, D Abadie. It came after the HDC's bulldozers had destroyed plots containing sweet potatoes, pineapple, bodi, cassava, peas, corn and other vegetables on lands that have been cultivated by the farmers for more than 30 years.
11 The Santa Cruz Valley stretches between Maraval and San Juan, along the Saddle Road. It lies between the hills of the Northern Range in the island of Trinidad and Tobago. Previously and important cacao bean producer, much of the valley consists of abandoned cacao plantations, small scale agriculture and naturally occurring tropical flora and fauna. The Santa Cruz Valley is considered prime residential real estate and many upscale residential developments are emerging. Santa Cruz has easy access to the famous Maracas beach, waterfalls, rivers and Golf courses en route to the city of Port of Spain.

13 Agricultural Access Roads Rehabilitation Programme off the ground The agricultural access roads in the Orange Grove East and West Estates were among the first to be rehabilitated as part of the Agricultural Access Road Rehabilitation Programme. The rehabilitation of the access roads at the Orange Grove Estates will help farmers to transport their crop and carry out their livelihood with greater ease and efficiency. One of the key objectives of this rehabilitation programme is to increase farming activity, which would in turn bring economic and social benefits for the country.
14 Harmful practises But disaster officials are blaming the floods on the denudation of the hillsides by builders and on the practises of so called "slash and burn" farmers to clear lands for cultivation. Hills have a natural cycle of replenishment during the dry season, said Stephen Ramroop, head of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), while addressing a meeting of the Inter Governmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean here last week.
