2 November January, 2016 Through art, connections can develop formally, conceptual or by means of association with other disciplines such as science, history, math, and language. Connections the exhibition will feature the art of EKU s Felicia Szorad and Travis Townsend as the LASC showcases their incredible works in metal and wood. Through this Discovery, students will become aware of the natural connections between art, science, history, math, and language. See all the amazing ways artists use science, history, math, and language to develop their ideas and create their art! During this Discovery, students will get to view how art can connect formally by means of the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, and space), see the different ways artists use science, history, math, and language to communicate their ideas, and how knowledge can be the inspiration for some amazing works of art with a visual presentation and art activity. During the exhibition component of this Art Discovery, students will get to view how art can connect formally through the elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, and space), see the different ways artists use science, history, math, and language to communicate their ideas, and how knowledge can be the inspiration for some amazing works of art. During the art activity component, students will create an art project based on the exhibition Connections as well as gain a better understanding how some artists incorporate language and text into their art with a project that explores the basic elements of art (line, shape, form, texture, color) and principles of design (emphasis, pattern, balance, contrast) along with the history of posters and the art work of Barbara Kruger. Pre-field trip activities and ideas: Below you will find links and a brief description for a handful of short YouTube videos that you can use to prep your students before their Art Discovery field trip. It is recommended to preview all videos to make sure that they are appropriate for students. Also, you can have your student write a reflection about the information presented in these short documentaries and videos.

5 Georges Seurat admired the bright palette of the Impressionists, but he wanted to ground his approach in sound principles of structure and color behavior. Working in Paris in the mid-1880s, the young artist turned to scientific theories of optics and color perception as the basis for his art, which became known as Neo-Impressionism. His methods called for the use of dotted brushstrokes applied according to rules of color behavior. In 1886, he first exhibited Sunday at the Grande Jatte, the monumental painting that has become the most representative work of the movement. After a controversial debut in Paris, the painting traveled to Brussels. While Seurat's novel style confounded most viewers, it attracted an enthusiastic band of progressive artists in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Post-field trip activities and ideas: After returning to the classroom, have your students write a reflection about their experience during their Art Discovery field trip. Some possible questions that you could ask include the following: What is art? Answer: Can tell a story, communicate an idea, express an emotion or a feeling, or reflect cultural beliefs and traditions What is an art exhibition? Answer: A place where art work is displayed such as a museum, gallery or school. Name one of the elements of art? Answer: Line, shape, color, value, texture, and space.
6 Having knowledge in other subjects can make you a better artist, name one of those subjects areas? Answer: Science, history, math and language. What do all artist use to create art? Answer: Their brain. As an art form, posters can do many things. Name one of these? Answer: Communicate ideas and concepts with visual imagery and words, Use symbols to represent ideas, Contain messages that can inform, entertain, and persuaded. Name the artist whose work your art activity project was based upon? Answer: American artist Barbara Kruger
