2 GAME (Geisel Academy of Master Educators) 2016 Nomination and Selection Criteria and Process Information Sheet 1. What is the overall purpose of the Geisel Academy of Master Educators (GAME)? GAME was formed in May 2012 to enhance the visibility of, and to recognize the importance of, true excellence in teaching and education, for faculty in all types of educational programs within our medical school and medical center. We hope that the master educators who are selected to join the Academy at Geisel (16 were named in the2012 inaugural class, 9 in the 2013 class, 7 in the 2014 class, and 9, with an additional 3 Lifetime Educator recipients in the 2015 class) will then give back to the school by helping younger faculty members develop their teaching skills, and help keep alive the passion for excellence in education despite competing clinical responsibilities. 1A. The Lifetime Educator Award. The award will recognize up to two master educators whose past contributions have had great impact at Dartmouth s Geisel School of Medicine. 2. How do I get nominated? Any faculty member at Geisel can arrange his or her own nomination. Two supporting letters of nomination, written by Geisel faculty should be submitted. 3. What is the timeline for this process? January, 2016 March 31, 2016 April, 2016 May, 2016 Late Spring, 2016 Invitation for nominations distributed to Geisel School of Medicine faculty Nomination packets from the nominee must arrive in Alison D. Ricker s office by 5 PM on Thursday March 31, Selection committee reviews materials from all nominees Dean of Medical School will contact awardees Dean of Medical School will publically announce GAME Class of 2016 at the annual State of the School Address 4. Who will serve this year on the selection committee? The composition of the selection committee includes Dr. Cathy Pipas, GAME 12, Chair; Alison Ricker, Administrator; Dr. David Nierenberg, GAME 12, Chair Ex Officio; Dr. Greg Ogrinc, the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education; Dr. Marc Bertrand, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education; Dr. Peter Mason, GAME 15; Dr. Cam Clark, GAME 15; and two faculty members to be named by the Faculty Council.
3 5. Where do I submit my nomination packet? A pdf of your CV, Educational Portfolio and nomination letters must be submitted by 5:00 pm on March 31, 2016 to Alison D. Ricker, Alison.D.Ricker@dartmouth.edu. 6. Whom can I contact if I have any questions about this process? Cathy Pipas at Catherine.F.Pipas@dartmouth.edu or Alison D. Ricker at or at Alison.D.Ricker@dartmouth.edu 7. What is expected of me if l am selected to join the 44 current members of GAME? GAME holds four or five meetings each year, and members are expected to attend as many as possible. All members are expected to give a workshop (roughly once every 2 years) discussing some aspect of medical education that they are very experienced in and wish to share with the broader Geisel community. These aim to enhance faculty development at Geisel. Members are also encouraged to participate in other GAME programs, such as the developing faculty-to-faculty mentoring program and clerkship reviews for the Medical Education Committee. 8. What do I need to provide to the selection committee? In your nomination packet, you must include your CV (in the standard Geisel format); 2 letters of from two Geisel faculty members who know the broad impact and value of your work in medical education (one will often be your department chair or section chief, but that is not required); and a detailed Educator s Portfolio prepared by the nominee himself or herself that follows this outline closely. The Educator s Portfolio describes nominees activities in each of the eight areas outlined below. Portfolios must follow this outline, so that the selection committee can judge the qualifications of all nominees fairly. The selection committee anticipates that each nominee will excel in one or more of these areas, but may not be active in all of these areas. A. Describe the amount and diversity of your teaching at all levels local medical students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, residents, fellows, CME programs, TDI students, etc. Please include educational activities you may have with Dartmouth College undergraduate students, Tuck students, or Thayer students as well, or with other groups such as local high school students. B. Describe the quality of your teaching in these various situations listed above, summating feedback that you have received. At the medical school, for example, medical students will often complete evaluations of the quality of teaching provided by their faculty, in the form of ratings and free-text comments. C. Describe the amount and type of mentoring and advising that you provide to local learners, including providing personal advice, career advice, and career development for students, graduate students, residents, fellows, etc.
4 D. List and describe your invited teaching experiences regionally, nationally, and internationally, as indicators of the more broadly recognized quality of your teaching, and wider recognition. E. Describe any formal teaching awards that you may have received, whether local, regional, or national. F. List and describe any educational leadership positions you have held at Dartmouth, regionally, or nationally, such as leading or directing courses, clerkships, residency programs, fellowship program, graduate programs, learning modules, or other administrative positions in the broad field of education. G. List and describe any new or innovative teaching modules, courses, techniques, electronic and web-based resources etc. that you have developed, with special emphasis on innovations that have been adopted within or outside of Geisel. H. Describe any research that you have performed and disseminated in any area of education or medical education, especially research that has culminated in dissemination to a broader audience through posters and talks at regional conferences, reviews, peer-reviewed publications, educational products, etc.
