7 5.1 Sub-projects: Thermal Test Chamber TTC Outcomes of SARDA focus meeting on industry support on 15 Nov Industry is supportive of the test chamber, provided that the price for testing is reasonable SABS will provide price indications, based on industry s commitment of 100 tests in first two years of operation Establishment of a standard for a testing procedure in SA 1/2 Sub-committee SABS/TC086/SC01 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning-Thermal Performance of Refrigerated Transport has been established SANS 1744 is being developed by a Working Group / Task Team Seite 7
8 5.1 Sub-projects: Thermal Test Chamber Establishment of a standard for a testing procedure in SA 2/2 Next steps are 1. Working group to complete the draft and submit to the relevant TC for approval (committee draft for 3 weeks) 2. If no comments received, the document will be circulated for public comment (60 days) 3. If no comments received then publication Until a standard is published in SA, the operator of the test chamber shall base activities on ATP standards and on the advice of the consultancy Cemafroid Further need for national standards on pull down testing and testing of refrigeration units? 11 5.2 Sub-projects: Body Design & Manufacturing Objective: Enable domestic manufacturers to improve thermal efficiency of their products Process: Individual manufacturing training and design support, each beneficiary is going to build a prototype box according to the proposed adjustments which will be tested at the Thermal Test Chamber Outcomes: Estimated annual savings for a large truck: 3,500-5,000 l diesel; t CO 2 p.a. 12 5.2 Sub-projects: Body Design & Manufacturing 1 st mission of consultants EGA to SA in May 2015 Visits to all beneficiaries, evaluation of production processes 2 nd mission in November 2015 Individual advise on improvements on design of the vehicles (reduce heat bridges etc) and manufacturing processes (particularly working with mould and jigs in order to achieve higher precision) GIZ to follow up with each beneficiary on suitability of changes and progress 3 rd mission after commissioning of the TTC Assembly of pilot bodies according to agreed design and manufacturing changes Pilot bodies to be tested at the TTC Seite 12

18 5.4 Sub-projects: Training measures Training Course on Cold Chain Logistics Objectives and background: Create awareness amongst operators and retailers Reduce energy use and therefore greenhouse gas emissions Reduce costs: lower fuel use, more efficient distribution, shorter waiting times, less spoilage due to wrong temperatures Improvement measures: Good practice guidelines, implementation of technology and software, purchasing strategy for new equipment, trainings etc. Implementation to be decided Train the trainer courses with interested operators, collaboration with training institutes Seite 18

20 6 Any other Issues Strengthening of instructional structures in SA The project gladly supports networking and coordination of stakeholders through meetings, study-tours etc this will only be possible for the duration of the project (Nov 2016) What can be done to sustain the networking effects: Strengthening / revitalization of existing association(s)?? 21 6 Any other Issues: new proposals Possible research topics in collaboration with German research centre House of Logistics and Mobility and suitable partners in SA 1. Best practises in cold chain logistics in EU / SA Assess areas of improvements along the cold chain (such as multitemp concepts, loading operations, delivery window concepts) could be incorporated into the cold chain training courses 2. Intermodal bodies concepts for refrigerated transport Analyse the best practices of intermodal refrigerated transport systems globally and investigate its feasibility in SA 3. Utilization of solar assisted refrigerated bodies in SA Analyse the feasibility of solar assistance concepts for different types of refrigeration (independent, belt-driven, eutectics, liquefied gases) 4.
