1 DEC-NSW 23rd August, 2016 Term 3 Week 6 NAPLAN Results: The students in years three and five will have their NAPLAN results with them today. If you wish to discuss your child s results with us, please contact the school for an appointment. We will use the students results to help identify areas of strength and weakness in our school. Aspire Me Sports Camp: Oliver and Matilda attended the years 5 & 6 Aspire Me Sports Camp at Deniliquin last Wednesday and Thursday. They worked with specialist instructors in Olympic Sports, in celebration of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The sports included martial arts, soccer, basketball, indoor hockey, gymnastics, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. We are all interested to read Oliver and Matilda s report of their two day sports camp. Thankyou to Stuart for taking the children to this camp. Riverina Environmental Education Centre: Our year five students have been invited to participate in a day of scientific investigation at the Riverina Environmental Education Centre in Wagga Wagga on Friday 26 th August. During the day the children will be given a number of tasks to introduce the concept of scientific method. They will complete a research task to compare freshwater organisms from different habitats using these techniques. Permission notes should be returned by tomorrow please. We thank our parents for taking our students to Wagga Wagga for this scientific opportunity. Book Fair and Book Character Parade: To celebrate Book Week we are again inviting Pages of Cobram to display books at our school for our book fair sale. This will be held on Thursday 8 th September. The books will arrive at our school on the Monday before, 5 th September and the children will have the opportunity to peruse the books during that week. A percentage of the proceeds from the book fair will be donated back to the school so that we can continue to replenish our own library. Back by popular demand is our Book Character Parade. We ask that the children dress as a favourite character from a book that they have read. We hope that they will have the book with them to show the audience as they parade their costume! Environmental Education and Veggie Garden: As part of the unit of Science being studied by all the students, our veggie patch has been quadrupled in size. We thank Stuart for travelling to Berrigan and bringing the gardens back from the Berrigan Men s Shed. Thankyou also to the Donald Family for supplying the straw/mulch/soil that is in the gardens and to Katie and Alex for delivering it to the boxes. Mrs Bruce is working with all the students to ensure that we have a very productive garden this spring. We have been adding to our compost on a regular basis in the hope that we will have very rich soil to go into the garden beds. To propagate the seeds we need some extra egg cartons, so if you have any spare egg cartons, we would be very appreciative. Hopefully we will have some delicious veggies available later this year! 2 Page 2 23rd August, 2016 FROM THE INFANTS ROOM... Students in the infant room have been exploring different forms of text from wordless texts to animation. Initially we looked at Jeannie Baker s Where the Forest Meets the Sea and Window. Based on the ideas of Jeannie Baker s collages, each student created a collage of what they see outside their bedroom windows. The also composed a descriptive piece of writing to accompany their collage.

3 FROM THE PRIMARY ROOM Sports Camp By Matilda Bruce On Wednesday the 17 th of August Oliver and I went to the Deniliquin Sports Centre for a sports camp. When we arrived we had free time so we grabbed a basketball and shot goals. Then we were separated into two groups, one group did gymnastics while the other group did martial arts. The first activity I did was gymnastics. There were ten stations of gymnastic activities. When we finished we had lunch. After we had lunch we did martial arts. The martial arts instructor taught us how to defend ourselves. The instructor taught us kicks and punches. After martial arts we had afternoon tea. We were separated into the two groups that we were assigned to that morning. The next activity was indoor hockey. We did hockey drills. Then we played a game, at the end of the game we had a penalty shootout. The scores ended up in a 6 all draw. The next activity was basketball. We did drills such as dribbling the ball and stealing the ball off other people. Then we played a game of basketball where there were four groups. I was in the black group and we played against the white team we lost but I didn t mind. While the supervisors were preparing dinner we had free time. After dinner we had a volley ball competition. We won 2 out of 4 games. Then the person in charge set up a projector and we watched the Olympics. Then we went to bed. The next day we had breakfast and started to get ready to walk to the Deniliquin Rams oval. When we arrived at the oval we were split into the same groups as the day before. The first activity was soccer. Our soccer coach Dave taught us some drills and skills. Then we played a game of soccer. We lost but the next game we played was 1 all. Then we had morning tea. Then we went to athletics with Sarah who was a little athletics coach. She taught us how to do high jump properly, how to throw a shot put and how to do long jump. Then we had lunch and went home. I had a wonderful time at the sports camp and I would recommend the sports camp to others. Aspire me sports camp By Oliver Bruce On Wednesday the 17 th of August, Matilda and I drove to the Deni for the Aspire me sports camp at the Deni sports stadium and the Deni Rams oval there were about forty other kids there. We were all staying for the night. When we arrived we were given our name tags and then we had some free time for about ten minutes. Then we met the instructors, the owner of the stadium who was there the whole time, gymnastics coach called Rachel and a Gymnast. We were sorted into groups of about twenty students, the mixed group with girls and boys and the all-boys group. Our group (the all- boys group) did martial arts while the mixed group did gymnastics. We started with learning how to tie the karate belt we were given once we had finished tying the belt we started off with some basic karate moves

Cancer Council recommends that hats are worn when the UV rating is above 3. This can occur on cloudy and wet days.
