5 Cycling in Venice The City of Venice created a Bicycle Office in 2002 with the aim of promoting cycling through projects and to support the development of cycle-lanes In November 2006, the City of Venice formally approved and published the Bicycle Master plan known as the BiciPlan. It foresees three phases.

11 PRESTO - Promoting Cycling for Everyone as a Daily Transport Mode An Intelligent Energy-Europe project, funded through EACI PRESTO is about competence building in cycling policies! The project aims to offer a set of tools for technicians to create cycle friendly urban environments, to implement sound cycling plans, to start up targeted promotion campaigns and to promote pedelecs. May 2009 Jan 2012 ~ 1,8 mln 12 partners - 7 countries

12 What are Pedelecs? Pedelecs are: electrically assisted pedal bicycles on which you have to pedal to get moving. Pedelecs differ from e-bikes which have a motor which can function independently of whether your pedal or not Electric bike is the: Generic name for all bicycles equipped with a motor (both pedelecs and e-bikes)

14 PRESTO The project s starting point: every city has to find the right balance between infrastructure measures and promotion measures. Depending on the level of development the balance is more towards infrastructure or more towards promotion.

26 PRESTO in Venice: promoting cycling 1 ) No bici, no party The No bici No party campaign is all about bringing city decision makers and local cyclists closer together for three reasons. To reward and encourage current cyclists, collect data on bicycle path level of use and information from cyclists useful to bicycle plan implementation and bicycle path network management and to inform cyclists on facilities available. It consists of a one day event, where stands at 5 cycling points of the City will count and reward cyclists, get them to fill in a brief questionnaire and give them information about bicycle related facilities (bike sharing, bike parking etc).

27 PRESTO in Venice: promoting cycling 2 ) The Green Mile Project The Green Mile project is a sustainable mobility education project with primary schools which places emphasis on the bicycle through a competition which is points based. Classes are in competition with each other and the winning class is that which carries out the most home school journeys in the most sustainable manner. It aims to : educate primary school children and their families on sustainable mobility encourage them to travel in a sustainable manner to school encourage cooperative processes between parents children and teachers to foster cycling.

29 PRESTO in Venice: promoting pedelecs Demonstration of electric bicycles during a City of Venice event To promote the use of pedelecs for daily trips in the City centre, targeting older people. The event will be held during a Car- free Sunday in March 2001.
