Between mid-1991 and mid-2015 Preston had an increase in population of 11,302 (8.7). This growth rate was much higher than the North region rate of 4.8 and the Lancashire overall rate of 5.4. It was under the United Kingdom rate of By 2039 the population of Preston is projected to increase to 145,500, a percentage change of 3.6 from 2014 estimates (rounded figures). Greater population increases are a sign of affluence as people move to where there are jobs, good schools and a good environment. 7 Employment by Broad Industry Group According to figures from an ONS survey in September 2014, the Public admin, education and health sector employed the highest proportion of persons aged 16 to 64 (39), followed by Financial and Other Business Services (19) and Wholesale and Retail, including motor trades (18). Preston and Blackpool have a higher proportion of public sector employment such as civil servants and local government employees than other districts in Lancashire.
