2 Message from the President Dear colleagues and friends, I am very happy to share with you my experience as IFITT president in 2015 and to introduce this Annual Report, whose structure I will follow in the next lines. IFITT Board, Members, and Community. Thanks to the help and commitment of a very dedicated Board and of many other IFITT members, the presence of IFITT has grown quite substantially both offline and online. I want to take this opportunity also to thank in particular four members of the board Aurkene Alzua-Sorzabal, Wolfram Höpken, Alessandro Inversini and Dimitris Serifis who will not be able to stand for re-election: IFITT is what it is also thanks to your great work, and we still need your support! IFITT for Excellence & Networking. In 2015 we have continued the experience of IFITT Hangouts on Air, which has demonstrated to be very successful and to provide the flexibility needed by an international network like ours. Additionally, we have published further IFITT interviews, and we have had the great honor to receive an ad-hoc video message by Mr. Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of UNWTO World Tourism Organization, in the occasion of the World Tourism Day This year we have launched IFITTtalk, as an outcome of the strategic board meeting we held in Lugano before ENTER2015. IFITTtalks provide the opportunity to our members worldwide to design and run local events, with the scientific, communication and economic support by IFITT. I must say that this has been a great idea, and we have already had five major events, able to bring IFITT to different places, and to become a major complement of the yearly ENTER etourism conference. Message from the President The educational section of our website has been substantially enriched by a brand new etourism Knowledge Map, which features updated bibliographical data on etourism research, and etourism courses from currently 21 most prominent universities and institutions worldwide. The IFITT Doctoral Summer School hosted this year by MODUL University in Vienna (Austria) has provided, as usual, a great platform for knowledge experience, professional growth and personal enrichment. I cannot at all summarize a number of other events we have somehow supported throughout the year, but you will be able to see in the coming pages their extension both in terms of geographical reach, as well as in terms of covered topics. IFITT for Innovation & Development. In 2015 IFITT has run a series of awards, promoting excellence in research and professional practices. The recipient of the IFITT Hannes Werthner Tourism and Technology Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the field of tourism and technology, has been awarded to prof. Josef A. Mazanec, whom I want to congratulate again for such a great achievement. 2

3 IFITT has also offered its ICT4D scholarship to junior researchers coming from developing/emerging regions, another sign of our commitment towards an open and sustainable academic and research environment. ENTER etourism Conferences. ENTER2015 in Lugano (Switzerland) has been a great success, and I am looking forward to a great ENTER2016 in Bilbao (Spain). This year we have received several applications to host ENTER2017, and Rome (Italy) has been selected as the venue for it. As they say all roads lead to Rome IFITT Gadgets. Both the Moleskine notebook and the IFITT pins have been very well received by our members. Thus we have decided to go further adding one more gadget a USB pen which can improve the physical presence of IFITT in our everyday life, and a deeper sense of belongings by our members. *** I want to thank every board member and all of our members and friends for a very successful 2015, and I am looking forward to new common enterprises in 2016! 10 IFITT for Excellence & Networking Hangouts on Air Throughout the year leading up to ENTER2016 conference, IFITT has hosted a series of discussions with experts from academia, industry, and destinations on various hot topics in ICT and tourism. They were broadcast live on IFITT s Google+ and are available now on our YouTube Channel. In the occasion of the World Tourism Day 2015, IFITT members were honored to receive an ad-hoc video message by Mr. Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General, World Tourism Organization UNWTO. IFITT for Excellence & Networking 10

11 The first IFITT hangout on air in 2015 happened on April 14, 2015 with Jamie Murphy (Australian School of Management) and J. Bruce Tracey (Cornell University). It was dedicated to the following topic: How MOOCs will revolutionize tourism and hospitality education and impact our research. The hangout was moderated by Nadzeya Kalbaska (Università della Svizzera italiana). The second hangout took place on May 19, It discussed the success story of the International Student Conference in Tourism Research (ISCONTOUR) by showcasing high quality research conducted by students and graduates. Roman Egger (Salzburg University of Applied Sciences) and Christian Maurer (Krems University of Applied Sciences) were featured in this discussion, moderated by Iis Tussyadiah (Washington State University). The hangout on August 13, 2015 had Sharing Economy as a topic. A discussion on the sharing economy in tourism and how it would transform the industry was made by our panel: Dzmitry Bazhko (Airbnb), Courtney Ries (Travel Portland), Dianne Dredge (Aalborg University), and Szilvia Gyimothy (Aalborg University). Iis Tussyadiah, IFITT vice president was the moderator of the talk. The last hangout on air this year was held on November 25, The topic of the discussion was augmented reality (AR). In particular Timothy Jung (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Alex Gibson (Dublin Institute of Technology) talked about the state of the art of AR, expectations regarding AR in terms of developments and applications in tourism, impacts for tourists, attractions and destinations. 13 IFITT Doctoral School IFITT Doctoral Summer School is a unique platform for knowledge and idea exchange in the field of Travel and Tourism technologies. The summer school provides inspirational and practical insights on the actual and future technological trends. Early-career researchers, both at Master s and Doctoral level, can familiarize themselves with various research methodologies and are introduced to the world of academic publishing. The third IFITT Doctoral Summer School happened in the MODUL University Vienna (MU) in Austria at the end of July This year IFITT Doctoral Summer School has been co-chaired by professor Karl Wöber and Daniel Leung. 14 IFITT talk This year IFITT has initiated a new format of supporting independent organization of workshops that deals with topics related etourism. The main objectives of the IFITTtalk workshops is to spark conversations, introduce new approaches, stay informed, find strategic partners and network, transfer knowledge between academia and the industry. In 2015 five successful events took place, while enriching discussion about etourism and increasing the footprint of our association globally. 16 IFITT Education As part of its Social Corporate Responsibility and its agenda to further enlarge the global etourism community, IFITT is keen to disseminate knowledge about Tourism and Technology. We would like to encourage students, trainers and scholars from around the world, to access educational material and information to enhance their topical understanding. The transmission of technical and intellectual skills and concepts through a variety of learning experiences enables learning individuals to develop career opportunities in today s multicultural and technology-driven working society. IFITT supports this challenge around life-long learning by providing an etourism curriculum that is based on stakeholders and pedagogical needs. Further etourism learning and resource material can be found in the IFITT Digital Library: full abstracts and bibliographical data from the two major research resources in the field of etourism, namely the ENTER Proceedings Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism and the Journal of Information Technology & Tourism (JITT) is accessible in the Digital Library. IFITT members get access to the full ENTER Proceedings ( ) through the Members area. In addition, the IFITT etourism Wiki is a theme-specific Wikipedia and comprises already in more than 40 topics in the field of etourism, ranging from ICT applications in the various tourism and travel industries, over smart phone applications, recommender systems, data mining and online auctions in tourism. 20 ENTER etourism Conferences The Major Annual Event of the IFITT Community The conference offers a worldwide and unique forum for attendees from industry, academia, government, and other organizations to actively exchange, share, and challenge state-of-the-art research and industrial case studies on the application of information and communication technologies in travel and tourism. The conference brings together the research community with industry, and it is organized in three streams: industry, destinations, and research tracks. The conference also features several world-class keynote speakers. ENTER conference proceedings are published by Springer.
