Each Skill Centre features a main workshop divided into individual training bays a classroom for theory sessions and a relaxation area for valuable downtime. Courses range from just four weeks to a year, after which there are a variety of routes that can be taken, including opportunities to progress on to further training for those with the ambition, ability and desire to continue learning. Finally, when the time is right, we ll help you look and apply for employment, from CV writing to preparing you for interviews. 1

At our Skill Centres in Middlesbrough and Sunderland, you will find environments ideal for hands-on learning that really does make a difference. As well as construction courses, we will help you improve your maths and English, which come as part and parcel of your course. 7 A day in the life of... A day in the life of Hi, my name is Sam. I m 18 and have been on programmes at the Sunderland Skill Centre. Before I started, I met with the Engagement Officer who helped me to get on the right course at the right level. So far, I have achieved my level 1 qualification and I m now part way through my level 2. Each day is mapped out in a schedule, but what we do changes on a daily basis. I learn the theory and the practical skills I need for my chosen profession but I also get support in other areas such as English and maths I know they are really important, but I d never been given the chance to improve them before. The work is hard but very rewarding, and I have really enjoyed working as part of a team while developing my individual skills. I am looking forward to starting my career as a painter and decorator and I know the team at Learning Curve Group will be on hand to help me into employment. If you can t decide which construction-based course to take, or are interested in more than one, then Multi Skills could provide you with the broad skills base you need. 9 Multi-Skills CSkills Entry Level 3 in Multi-Skills CSkills Level 1 in Multi-Skills Location Middlesbrough & Sunderland How long will it take? We have Multi Skills courses ranging from a few weeks long to several months. It all depends on what skills you already have, how quickly you take to your new trade and what level of qualification you want. Entry requirements All candidates will be invited to attend a pre-course interview at one of our Skill Centres. 6
10 Plastering Plastering Plastering is a physically demanding trade that, in order to learn, requires skill, dedication and an eye for detail. To get the best out of the course, you must be willing to work hard and listen closely to instruction, as well as work on your own initiative. learners/skill-centres 7
11 Plastering Plastering CSkills Award Entry Level 3 Working in a dedicated training bay, you will learn how to plaster to a high standard. You will carry out, and become skilled at, tasks including: Boarding Rendering and even moulding your own dado rail CSkills Diploma Level 1 Skimming CSkills Diploma Level 2 Repairing damage caused by rewiring and water In addition to practical activity, you will acquire knowledge during theory sessions relating to your chosen craft. You will also be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills with our highquality functional instruction. We can also help you prepare for the world of work through relevant employability support and work experience. Location Middlesbrough How long will it take? Plastering courses can last from a number of weeks up to a year, depending on your qualification choice. 12 Joinery Joinery If you have an eye for detail, pride in what you do and an ability to multitask, then this course is for you. 13 Joinery Joinery CSkills Award Entry Level 3 CSkills Diploma Level 1 CSkills Diploma Level 2 Location Middlesbrough & Sunderland You will work on a variety of projects, where you will learn how to produce different timber joints and cuts, make frames, hang doors and produce stud work. You will also be trained in the safe use of power tools. The course will teach you how to measure up fittings, identify what quantities of materials you will need for the job, and ensure you can create work that is straight and level. You will learn the manual skills of a joiner and have opportunities to be creative, to work from architects drawings and kitchen fitting designs, and even create your own designs. How long will it take? Joinery courses can last from a number of weeks up to a year, depending on your qualification choice. Through expert training on the use of materials, such as oil and water-based paints, you will soon grasp the best solution for each job and how to create the wow factor. You will discover how to impress clients and brighten up their lives by creating the liveable and workable spaces they dream of. You will construct different types of wall fit for a variety of purposes and use special-shaped bricks to create varied brick patterns and features. You will also be given the opportunity to improve your maths and English skills with our high-quality functional instruction. We can also help you prepare for the world of work through relevant employability support and work experience. How long will it take? 20 Maths and English Maths and English Location Various Locations Making notes... reading instructions... analysing information doing calculations interpreting directions... understanding plans... these are all important in everyday life. However, sometimes our numeracy and literacy skills hold us back in general day-to-day tasks and even worse, from getting a job. That s why when completing a course at one of our Skill Centres we are also able to help you improve your English and maths. This is not like being at school, we will get you through your qualifications and on the path to success. Qualifications include: Functional Skills English (Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2) Functional Skills Maths (Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2) GCSE English GCSE Maths A variety of short English and maths units and awards 17
21 Maths and English We can help to improve your core numeracy and literacy skills by enhancing your knowledge, understanding and application of these essential skills. Skills gained include: Writing Reading Speaking and listening Working with fractions, decimals and percentages Measurements Statistics, basic algebra and geometry learners/skill-centres 18
22 Traineeships Traineeships Want to start your career in the construction industry? With a mixture of training and on-the-job experience, a traineeship could lead to your perfect career. Here is what your time on a traineeship might look like: Traineeship Model years old Traineeship Model years old 01 Week one-two Three days per week hands-on consturction 01 training and employability training including job search, interview skills and CV writing. Week three-six 02 Four days a week work experience with 02 employer. 03 Traineeship complete Move on to an apprenticeship or 03 qualification in our centre. Week one-three Four days per week accredited hands-on construction training and employability training including job search, interview skills and CV writing. Week four-six Five days a week work experience with employer. Traineeship complete Move on to an apprenticeship or qualification in our centre. 19
23 Apprenticeships Apprenticeships If you can t decide whether to continue your education or start your career, then you can do both. Apprenticeships are at the heart of a variety of industries and careers. Duration Minimum 12 months and 1 day Undertaking an apprenticeship means you have the opportunity to earn while you learn, work for a real employer and achieve a nationally accredited and recognised qualification. There is also huge scope for career progression and personal development if you choose the apprenticeship route.qualifications are carried out and assessed in the workplace. Life as an apprentice You will be employed by a business and be a fully fledged member of their team, completing your apprenticeship as part of your working week. An assessor will visit you regularly in the workplace and monitor your progress, gathering feedback from your employer on your development. The apprenticeship will be completed through on-the-job activity and off-the-job training and will last no less than one year, after which you and your assessor will plan your apprenticeship completion to suit your needs. A typical day will depend upon the industry you choose and may involve regular hours or shift working. 20
