2 Why Do Seals Need to be Replaced? To achieve longer life, bearings need to be protected against the ingress of dirt and foreign material Some 70% of bearings have reduced life due to: 1. The ingress of foreign material 3. Poor shaft finish. into the bearing chamber. 4. Worn shafts. 2. Poor seal selection, ie; incorrect seal material for the application. 5. Incorrect shaft hardness. Therefore, to achieve longer seal life it is important to select the correct seal for your application. The following areas must be addressed: ENVIRONMENT Shell Sealing Element THE SEAL Primary Sealing Lip BEARING SIDE Hinge Garter Spring The selection of sealing lip materials should be based on sealing applications, compatibity with lubricants being retained or excluded and operating temperatures. These are Nitrile, Polyacrylates, Silicones, and Viton. THE FLUID It is important to check the lip compound compatibility chart below as a number of lubricants are not compatible with standard nitrile lip seals. A machine lead allows oil to be pumped out of the bearing chamber or allows contaminants to be pumped under the lip.
