3 Speciality areas within Pharmacy Aseptics Mental Health Clinical Pharmacy Medicines Information Services Clinical Trials Dispensary work, including taking in and handing out dispensed prescriptions Pharmacy Technicians are also employed by community Pharmacies

4 The Training Courses Trainee Technicians undertake two courses, which run concurrently over 2 years. BTEC Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science;- Edexcel Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (NVQ) Day release from work is provided for the BTEC course (This is a set day and trainees must attend regularly) Attendance is monitored by the course provider and by the workplace training managers NVQ Each candidate will have an assigned work place assessor

5 The Two Year Training Programme 2 year Educational Plan (rotations) is given to each trainee at the start of the course, work place rotations include;- General Dispensing (including Blister pack, Clinical Trials, and Controlled Drug Dispensing) Prescription handling (taking in, validating and handing out prescriptions) Reception Stores and Ward Stock Top Ups Community and Mental Health Aseptics Medicine Information Clinical Pharmacy

6 Employment status whilst Training Trainee Pharmacy Technicians are contracted members of staff Trainees will be employed by the Trust full time (37.5 hours per week) Trainees will be required to work weekends, bank holidays and late evenings on a rota basis Trainees will receive an annual leave allocation in accordance with NHS Agenda for Change rules Fixed term contract for 2 years

7 Workplace support and training In addition to the courses trainees will complete a workplace training manual designed to teach the trainee the practical aspects of the job. Workplace mentors will support the trainees in the workplace Trainees are allowed study time during the working week to complete their work.

8 Essential entry criteria for the course Applicants must have the following minimum entry criteria to be considered for this training position;- 5 GCSEs grades A-C (or equivalent) These must include;- English Language Mathematics Two science subjects or double science. Applicants must also satisfy the essential criteria as stated in the person specification of the job description.

10 Salary and Professional Registration Salary as a trainee is 15,411 in year 1 rising to 16,512 in year 2 Starting salary for a newly qualified Pharmacy Technician who secures a position in the NHS is 18,838. With experience this can rise to 22,016 With additional accreditations a Higher grade Pharmacy technician s salary can range from 21,478-27,901 Very Senior Pharmacy Technicians can earn up to 47,088 Community Pharmacies and Private Hospitals will have their own pay rates/scales As Professionals, Qualified Pharmacy Technicians must register with the GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council) Registration fees; ( 102 initial application fee [once only]; plus entry onto the register 108; Thereafter 102 annual renewal) * Salaries and Professional fees correct as of March 2015
