1 ART AND DESIGN The Art and Design course is based on a series of structured projects, which enable the pupils to explore the basic principles of design and encourage them to produce creative interpretations of a wide variety of themes, whilst experimenting with a range of media and techniques. Although we have basically a practical course, the history of art forms an important part of the syllabus. The course closely follows the guidelines of the National Curriculum. All pupils in Upper School will use a sketch-book as a visual diary to record and collect images in a wide range of media which may be used as reference materials for projects. Throughout the school the syllabus aims to: 1. Develop an understanding of the nature of visual thinking and its appropriate language; encourage visual literacy. 2. Develop the capacity for creative thought and action, encouraging the pupil to innovate and initiate effective personal responses. 3. Encourage experience in the use of materials, their limits, and effects on visual imagery. 4. Encourage flexibility of thought and excitement in creating art work which stems from understanding. 5. Provide the experience which enables pupils to discover where their talents and interests lie. 6. Enable pupils to relate their own work to that of other artists and designers. 7. Develop an understanding of the holistic nature of art and design activity. 8. Develop an understanding of cultural influences through art and design. Projects explore the basic elements of line, shape, form, colour, tone, pattern and texture. A sequential development of ideas, visual research and analysis is encouraged. Discussion within a group and at a personal level is considered vital, as is critical appraisal. The key to successful art work is careful observation and recording. Art does not just happen at the fingertips, but is the result of thought and analysis, an approach which we encourage at all ages. As pupils progress through Upper School, they are encouraged towards an increasingly independent attitude, because projects become more involved and thought provoking. The Junior and Senior Art clubs cater for all interests and abilities. The year 7&8 Scholars Art club helps those who are gifted and talented in Art, and pupils who are interested in taking an Art Scholarship to a Senior School (NB. Those who attend this club will be required to complete homework every week) Many of the Art schemes of work have cross-curricular links with other subjects and departments throughout the school.
