6 USF s Ca re e r O u tl ook G U I DE Accounting Businesses from the corner donut shop to major corporations need to focus on costs, control expenses and calculate return on investments in many of the decisions they make. The accountant or the chief financial officer is a key member of every top management team. You will be judged on how ethically, competently, and professionally you deliver that service. CAREER OUTLOOK: The US Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that accountants are one of the top ten growth jobs as the nation looks at possible tax law changes and an uncertain cost for money. Jobs are expected to grow at a rate of 16% over the next decade. On average, starting accountants can expect to earn around $33,786. Computer Science America continues to compete successfully in part, due to our ability to use technology. It can be utilized in just about every field: business, medical, education, law enforcement/security, service industries, communication (voice, visual and print), science, engineering, gaming/ simulations, manufacturing. Students majoring in one of our Computer programs start taking CS courses freshman year. As a result, you are ready for potential internships as early as the spring of sophomore year! CAREER OUTLOOK: To assess the job outlook one need look no further than Silicon Valley which predicts continued growth in the next few years with 89% of the firms expected to hire. Over the next decade, jobs are expected to grow 12%. Average starting salary is around $50,000. Entrepreneurship It all begins with an idea! The successful entrepreneur has not only an idea but a plan. Students will take courses that give them the skills to pursue their entrepreneurial spirit. The courses will provide you with theory and application experiences to execute your plan. Emphasis will be on business plan development and handson exposure through internships. CAREER OUTLOOK: Opportunities and pay scale are only limited by the scope and success of the entrepreneur! University of St. Francis Finance The Finance major is designed for students who intend to assume professional roles as financial managers. A student may choose among four concentrations which put into place an innovative approach to learning combining traditional curriculum, experiential learning, practitioner based instruction and certification ready curriculum. Each concentration prepares a student for a unique career path in the field of finance. CAREER OUTLOOK: The US Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts jobs in this area will grow by 23% over the next decade. National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported that the average salary for finance majors was $51,503. Healthcare Management The new health care law coupled with growth in the health care industry has opened opportunities for the creation of many new and exciting careers. The health care management field focuses on planning, directing, or coordinating medical and health services in hospitals, clinics, physician group practices, health insurance companies, public health agencies, nursing facilities and other health-related organizations. Our program prepares healthcare managers and administrators for careers within a healthcare facility or business. CAREER OUTLOOK: Employment of medical and health services managers is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Average starting salary is $35,220 as reported in the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
7 Right: Computer Science majors are challenged by ample software programs and a robust computer infrastructure to design applications and simulate programs. Numerous computer labs, a data communication lab, PCs, Macs and campus wi-fi are available to all students across the campus. Information Technology Access and delivery of information is critical to any organization. The IT professional designs and maintains efficient and effective use of network technology into existing company structures. Graduates have knowledge, skills, and strategies for the deployment of emerging technology, installation and maintenance of networks, management of resources and security of systems to support a firm s functional areas such as finance, human resources, management, marketing and supply chain management. CAREER OUTLOOK: Jobs are expected to grow and average starting salaries are around $50,000. International Business With the growth of international trade and the multinational component of many US businesses, it is no wonder that there is a growing demand for business graduates with global communication and business skills. The International Business major is designed to provide the student with an interdisciplinary degree combining courses in business, foreign language, and area studies. Courses will be designed to emphasize applied practice thereby enhancing a student s marketability in a variety of career options with global corporations, banks, government and non-governmental organizations, and other international organizations. CAREER OUTLOOK: Entry level job earnings in international business can range from $32,000 to $50,000. Management Skill shortages, diversity issues and global competition are but a few challenges facing today s manager. Leadership ability, quantitative analysis skills, oral and written communication skills, a solid background in business - accounting, economics, finance and marketing - are all part of majoring in Management at the University of St. Francis. Critical thinking, motivating, and acting ethically are all necessary for successful managers. CAREER OUTLOOK: Employment opportunities are expected to grow by 12% over the decade. Entry level management positions can earn anywhere from $30,000 to $55,000 per year. Marketing A common misperception of marketing is that it s purely selling a product. Sales are only one aspect in this broad and exciting field. Today s marketing jobs offer a fast paced, challenging and rewarding career. E-Marketing has revolutionized our traditional concepts of marketing, advertising and customer relationships. Technology is changing the competitive landscape making today s marketing professionals a critical component in every organization s success. Organizations rely on marketing to assist in making strategic decisions about product development, pricing, positioning and placement. CAREER OUTLOOK: The average salary for beginner level marketing professionals is about $43,325. Transportation & Logistics Management Transportation & Logistics Management will prepare students for knowledge intensive positions within this fast growing industry. Graduates in this major will be prepared to solve complex problems and meet organizational goals in a variety of venues including business logistics, distribution, supply chain management and domestic and international transportation management. CAREER OUTLOOK: Median starting salary can range from the mid $40s to $60,000 according to Logistics Magazine 2012 salary survey with excellent job prospects because of an aging workforce. All job outlook data gathered from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. College of Business and Health Administration
