To integrate the content from background courses into problem solving applications on typical food industry challenges 2. To provide students with teamwork experiences while solving typical food industry problems 3. To gain experience with locating and utilizing appropriate resources for technical problem solving 4. To develop skills with technical writing and presentations in the form of proposals and technical reports. Course Materials and References: Recommended Reading --- Hall, D Jump Start your Brain. 2 Topic Outline: The objectives of the course will be achieved through a combination four shortterm projects and one long-term project. DATE CLASS ASSIGNMENTS DUE Jan 12 Jan 14 Jan 19 Introduction to the course; review of course objectives and introduction to short-term (ST) and long-term (LT) project concepts. Creation of teams. Review and assignment of ST1 project topics. Review of outline for project proposals. Create teams for long term problem (LT) projects ST1 project proposals. Discussion of LT project topics. Submit draft of ST1 project proposals by 8 am on Monday (1/18) Jan 21 Review and assignment of LT project topics. Final ST1 proposal due. Jan 26 Jan 28 recommendations for ST1 Presentation of final reports for ST1 Draft of ST1 project report due Submit draft of LT project proposals by 8 am on Monday (2/1) Feb 2 Feb 4 Teams working on completion of ST1 project reports and LT Assignment of ST2 topics. ST2 project proposals. Final ST1 project report due. Submit draft of ST2 project proposals by 8 am on Wednesday (2/3) Feb 9 Feb 11 LT project proposals recommendations for ST2 Final ST2 proposal due. Draft of ST2 project report due

Each team will select 4 short-term (ST) projects and one long-term (LT) project 3. Each team will select a team leader for the LT project. The team leader will change for each ST project. All students will have an opportunity to serve as team leader. Assignments: 1. Each ST project will require submission of a project proposal, a draft project report and a final project report; and an oral presentation of each final report. 2. The LT project will require submission of a project proposal, four draft progress reports, a draft final report, and a final report, and an oral presentation of the final report.

Collaboration is expected and encouraged. All reports from independent projects must represent independent work by the student.
