1 i EXPLANATORY NOTES This annual Industry Performance Report on goat presents the industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age classification; volume of production; supply and disposition; and monthly average prices at farmgate level. The Livestock and Poultry data system of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) is supported by two (2) major surveys namely: 1) The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) which covers one (1) of the four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) consisting of 9700 sample households in 673 sample barangays nationwide. 2) The Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which covers around 305 independent farms with farm capacity of at least 21 head of adult goat. Both surveys for goat are simultaneously conducted every semester in all provinces. Another survey that supports the statistical requirements of the livestock and poultry sector is the Survey of Animals Slaughtered in Abattoirs and Dressing Plants. This covers around 1,005 accredited and non-accredited abattoirs and 98 accredited dressing plants nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

3 iii HIGHLIGHTS The country s goat inventory as of January 1, 2009 was estimated at 4.19 million head, 0.42 percent higher compared with last year s headcount. Around percent of the goat population were female breeders or doe, 8.89 percent were male breeders or buck, percent were kids, and percent were classified as castrated male and other goat for fattening. 4 1 GOAT INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT INVENTORY By Farm Type Total goat inventory as of January 1, 2009 was estimated at 4.19 million head, 0.42 percent higher compared with last year's headcount of 4.17 million. Of the total goat population, percent were raised in backyard farms while, those raised in commercial farms accounted for only 1.05 percent. By Age Classification Of the total goat population, around 37 percent were female breeders, 9 percent were male breeders, 33 percent were kids, and 21 percent were male castrated goat and those intended for fattening. 5 2 Top Producing Regions The top producing regions in terms of total goat inventory were Region Vl (14.46 percent), Region VII (12.74 percent), Region I (12.59 percent), Region XI (8.95 percent), and Region III (7.58 percent). These five (5) Regions accounted for percent of the country s goat inventory. Figure 5. 6 3 GOAT INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY-DISPOSITION Volume of Production The total volume of goat production in 2008 was estimated at thousand metric tons. This was 1.90 percent higher than the previous year's output of thousand metric tons. Supply and Disposition Total supply of live goats in 2008 was estimated at 7.40 million head, 2.90 percent higher than last year's level. The growth in the supply of goat was indicated by the increment in beginning stocks and in the number of live births, which grew by 3.10 percent and 2.69 percent, respectively. In 2008, total disposition of goats was 3.20 million head, up by 6.35 percent from last year s level. Goat slaughtered in 2008 accounted for 95 percent of the total goats disposed. It has increased by 7.31 percent compared with 2007 records. Table 3. 7 4 SUPPLY-UTILIZATION AND PRICE Supply and Utilization In 2008, total supply of chevon stood at 53,152 metric tons. Estimates of net food disposable were 40,094 metric tons of carcass and 13,058 metric tons of offals. The derived estimates of per capita consumption for carcass and offals were 0.44 kilogram per year and 0.14 kilogram per year, respectively. Farmgate Price The annual average farmgate price of live goat in 2008 went up from previous year s P69.93 per kilogram to P74.71 per kilogram. The highest average farmgate price in 2008 was registered during the month of July at P77.24 per kilogram. This was 9.79 percent higher compared with the price in the same period in On the other hand, the lowest farmgate price was recorded during the month of February at an average of P71.36 per kilogram.
