1 What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? This has been a busy year, delivering In My Shoes training, and also continuing to improve the software. Principle goals have been to make the system clearer, easier and more cost effective to use. The purpose of this document is to describe the more significant changes. These are the ones that are more likely to be seen or encountered, and may be confusing to existing users. There have also been many less obvious improvements in both performance and function that may not be immediately apparent. The latest version is (build 280). The build number does make a difference, so even if you have with a lower build number, it will be worth updating to the latest version. The latest version will not expire until mid 2016, when we expect to launch another major update. If you are not familiar with In My Shoes, and are wondering what this is all about, you can get more information here-> and here -> Part 1 of "Emotions & People" now a standalone module Above is the Emotions & People module as it used to appear. The diagonal line (emphasised in red) indicated that it involved two parts. The first, (top left) investigated whether a child was able to acknowledge having experienced emotions represented by the emotions palette. (Remember, up to this point exploration of affect has all related to another child). The second part (bottom right) explored the child's experience of positive and negative emotions in relation to significant individuals associated with various settings. The two parts made it very difficult to train this module and also to remember how to use it! We decided that we could separate the two parts and make part 1 a standalone module called Have you ever?", which naturally fits in after the Emotions and Scenes module. You can see from the new main screen below that Have You Ever becomes module 4. What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 1

2 Note that results of the insertion of a new module 4, the numbers of the subsequent models are all incremented by one. You can also see that the layout of the screen has been much improved, and a new colour coding system introduced to age with identification of the function of the modules. The blue arrows indicate the recommended flow through the core modules. There is an information sheet which explains all this in a little more detail, which can be downloaded here > It can also be seen that the setting pop-up menu (marked 1 above) has been moved so it is associated with the modules it directly affects. Overall window size has been increased to allow for the new layout and to make things generally a little less cramped. What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 2

3 Emotions palette The function of the emotions palette has been modified so that the currently selected face is offset (1 above). This emphasises what has been selected, and also allows the text box containing the interviewee's label for the emotion to expand so that longer labels can be seen in full (2). You can also see at (3) a new icon which when clicked opens the message box. The existing keyboard shortcuts (control-0 on Windows & command-0 on Mac) and the corresponding menu items still work. However it is much easier and more transparent to click on the envelope icon to enter a message. It also enables older children to choose to do the same thing without using the In My Shoes menus. The new message icon is available on all screens, and works the same way wherever it is found. What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 3

4 Text messages and markers There are also other changes to text messages and markers. The first is that the font size has been increased in order to aid readability. The second is that 'markers' are now referred to and labelled footnotes". We decided to make this simple change because during training we were continuously describing them as working like footnotes which indicate with the number the point during the interview at which something occurs and the footnote text describing what took place. It is also now possible to enter footnote text at any time, not just when quitting the program. This function has been added at the bottom of the messages menu ( highlighted above). Exporting to PDF and HTML Results files can now be reliably exported in both HTML and PDF format on both Mac and Windows platforms, and by all users whether fully trained and authorised, or currently in training. Export is achieved via the File menu. HTML is generated by selecting the option marked 1 export as web doc '. PDF is produced by selecting the option marked 2. Once you have selected a folder for HTML or PDF exports, In My Shoes will remember your choice and will automatically select it in future when you choose the same options. 5 Emotions & People results matrix Part of the results file which has not always been as easily interpreted as it might be is the results matrix for the Emotions & People module. This summarises information about the people selected and thus associated with different emotions. You can see above that the first row underneath the emotions (marked 1) indicates whether each face was enabled (= yes ) or disabled (= no ) during this module. For ease of reference the colours of the rows associated with each person alternate red and blue. There is no significance associated with these colours. Reading across the table, each person has 2 numbers associated with each emotion or a dash if they were not selected at all. The upper of the 2 numbers indicates the order in which the person appeared onscreen (left=low, right=higher). The lower number indicates the order in which they were taken from the people chooser and placed in the lower part of the screen. Examining the table above, it can be seen that Benny ( 2 ) and Abi ( 3 ) were both prioritised over other figures for selection in association with positive emotions. In contrast, Benny's step-mum ( 4 ) was selected second for the tearful face, and first for the angry and worried faces. "Rachel's scenes" Above is the scene selector displaying what has traditionally been referred to as Rachel's scenes. This is because they were developed by Dr Rachel Calam, a member of the development team. If selected in the preferences, the Emotions and Scenes module runs presenting these What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 5

6 instead of the 'standard' scenes. As you can see, in contrast to the standard scenes, they allow affect to be associated with children in both domestic and school contexts. We have therefore decided to relabel them Domestic & School. There are 3 options available in the emotions and seen preferences (see above). The 'school' option selects only the school scenes from the domestic & school' set. The standard scenes were created in order to assess the ability of the child to use the emotions palette meaningfully. In contrast, Domestic & School are rather more investigative of the child's own experiences. The figures are still not intended to represent the child him or herself, but nevertheless the situations depicted often generate rather more self-disclosure than the standard scenes. 7 Somatic experiences module This module no longer begins with a number of blank pages available.there is a single page to which somatic experiences can be added and labelled. If more examples are required, the interviewer simply clicks on the white cross on a green background (marked 1 above), and a new page will be created. There is also now a small drawer which slides open to reveal 3 options. the drawer is activated by control-alt clicking on the icon marked 2 above. It is shown in the open position. Clicking on the icon marked 3 switches between a single image that rotates to show front and back and the default view of separate images concurrently showing front and back. Clicking on the icon marked 4 switches the figure from closed to one dressed only in vest and pants. Clicking on icon marked 5 switches the figure between male and female images. This allows an interviewee to talk about injury and pain caused to others, perhaps siblings of the opposite sex. Like other modules, Somatic Experiences' has been updated to include the new message box icon (marked 6 above) What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 7

8 Changes to the Experiences module Like the Somatic Experiences module, this now starts with a single page. Additional experiences can be explored by creating another page using the white cross icon marked '1' above This module also includes a drawer (marked 2) which allows The stimulus seen to be changed using the above options. The ability to display any image at all means it is possible to show photographs of any aspects of the child's life and experience with which he or she is having difficulty. 9 desensitisation CBT treatment for anxiety conditions etc. The second icon in the drawer allows changes to be made to the list items displayed on the right-hand side of the screen. The options are the above. The second part of the Experiences module has also been significantly improved.control-alt clicking on any of the text labels highlighted and marked 1 will generate a customisation palette What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 9

10 which enables labels and colours to be customised to the particular needs of the interviewee. This allows the placement of the experience cards to be much more meaningful and personally significant. They can be seen above that what might on the face of it be a uniform problem with school attendance can actually become something nuanced and rather detailed. It also means that not only can hypotheses be generated with respect to possible causes of difficulty, but strategies for change rehearsed. What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 10

11 Forgot to save results? An occasional problem encountered by users is when they failed to select a save location when starting In My Shoes. (This is by clicking on the cancel button rather than the save button when in my shoes has started and requests a file name and location to save the data. It is only when the program refuses to accept text in a message box or a footnote that it becomes obvious results are not being saved. In the past, interviews would have to read a complex message box that instruct them on how to begin to save results. Now you will see the altogether much friendlier and helpful message above. Re-entering Places & Introduction modules In previous versions, re-entering either the places or introduction modules would generate a warning about losing data. Now interviewers are free to revisit these modules. Previous selections will still be visible, and will have been recorded. However it means that an interviewee can change their self representation at any time or change the image associated with a care setting. What's New in the latest version of In My Shoes ( )? - 11

12 Unresponsive Main screen bug In some circumstances the main screen can become unresponsive. It is not a common problem and it has proved difficult to determine the exact cause of this and to resolve it. It can definitely be triggered if either interviewer or interviewee double clicks on the various module panes. It is therefore important to avoid using double clicks anywhere within In My Shoes, but particularly on the main screen. If the main screen does become unresponsive, there is a solution which works in the majority of cases. Select 'Navigation' in the 'Modules Menu (highlighted & marked '1' above)... 13 ... the screen will go black, and the titlebar of the Window will change to "In My Shoes Training" ('1) Select 'Navigation from the same menu again ('2') The screen will return to the main screen, and the module panes will respond to mouse clicks again.
