Our school work together to make sure we all live a happy and healthy lifestyle. We work even harder to make sure the life we lead won t affect the planet for our future generations around the world. We like to share our Eco ideas with our community and global links and are always happy to take on board ideas of others. Evelyn are working hard to... Re-duce Re-cycle Re-think Re-use As a whole school we are led by our team of Eco Warrior Reps. They work hard in leading the school in making a difference to the world we live in. This involves modelling Eco initiatives and providing continuous guidance for the pupils of Evelyn and the community. we are striving to make an impact on our school, community, country and planet.

Our Eco Warrior reps encourage pupils to consider re-usable tubs for their packed lunches, in order to reduce the amount of bag, foil and paper waste. A chart has been produced by the team to display how many pupils are using re-usable storage for their lunch. Our goal, is to become the first school to be a package free lunch school. Each class have a recycling paper bin. Posters have been displayed on these bins to remind everyone to use both sides before disposal. The team monitor the bins to ensure paper has been used to its full. Paper that is found with opportunity for more use is taken out and placed in classroom scrap paper trays and to the office for the fax machine. At Evelyn, we value and uphold our one school rule RESPECT. Respect, for ourselves, our friends and our environment. We therefore, work as a whole school to keep our school an enjoyable and exciting learning place. Around our school grounds, bins are provided. There are waste bins and recycling bins. During the warmer seasons, we are given the choice of eating lunch outside. It is important that all the bins are clearly labelled, in order for everyone to dispose of their waste accurately. We carry out lots of learning outdoors, such as, Shakespeare plays in the amp theatre, nature walks, art and PE lessons.

At Evelyn Primary school, we appreciate the need for biodiversity, it demonstrates a natural environment. We enjoy the many gardens we have at our school Our Reflection garden is a place were we can take a book and read, have time with friends or take time alone to reflect. Plants are planted in pots around the school to attract wildlife and to also provide pleasure for ourselves and our community. Through curriculum areas we are able to explore biodiversity, e.g. green plants, living things and their environment and life processes. As much as possible, throughout the year, our large school field is available for us to use. We embrace the opportunities for running free on the open field, getting lots of exercise, developing specific sport skills and discovering hidden worlds, such as habitats for wildlife. Once every half term our team ask their families and friends for used magazines to bring into school. In the school grounds, the team hold a magazine bazaar for parents and the community. The magazines are re-sold and the money is used for supporting our Eco initiatives, e.g. water butts for the school grounds. Magazines that aren t sold, are recycled. We are pleased to support a charity called Blythswood. A clothes, books and shoe recycling bin has been placed in our school grounds for parents and the community to bring their unwanted items. Our school holds an annual bring and buy book fair. This is a fun activity and an ideal way of showing how we can re-use books whilst raising money for local charities. We now have 2 outdoor, industrial, recycle bins. Eventually, we would like for the council to take away one of our waste bins, so that the majority of our waste is recyclable. Over time, this action will make a difference to our planet and our schools budget, as we save money on having less waste bins empties.

Eco warriors monitor the amount of food wasted at lunch times. The food waste is weighed every day with a digital weighing machine. The children then make a recording of the weight. A target is produced from the results and presented to the school. The ink and paper used in the photocopier are monitored weekly and data is shared at meetings. The team, through discussion, are able to create targets from the collected data. Fuel is monitored by the team and our schools site manager. Feed back on the fuel bills is shared with the team by our head teacher, Mrs Arnold. All pupils at Evelyn Primary are encouraged to water plants around school with old dregs of water from water bottles, before throwing it away and refilling. Evelyn s travel plan is a scheme which encourages pupils and parents to think more about the way in which they travel to and from school. Other means of travel are advised, such as, Car share, cycling and walking. A WOW (walk once a week) register is taken every day to calculate the children s mean of travel. A prize giving ceremony takes place at the end of the year to reward the children who make the most effort to use means of traffic, other than car. We are pleased to offer pupils a cycling proficiency training course, which is both enjoyable and provides cycle safety education. We are pleased that we are now able to offer a safe and secure bike shelter for children who wish to travel to school on their bikes.

Eco warriors work hard and think of more Eco ways to communicate to parents and the community. We have a parent mail system set up and continue to encourage parents to access all school correspondence through . The reception area of the school displays a monitor which communicates school activity and Information. We hold community coffee mornings to demonstrate our Eco work. These are led by the Eco Warrior reps. A poster created by the Eco reps has been given to parents to provide ideas for making a change to the planet. Assemblies are another form of communication to our community to demonstrate our Eco efforts. Our local councils environmental sustainable team are accommodating in providing us with updates through assemblies. As a school, we believe it is important that everyone understands the root reason for making changes, like, re-using, recycling, reducing and re-thinking. Consequently, our Eco team have produced posters to explain more about global Perspectives, such as: energy, biodiversity, water, healthy living, litter, transport, waste and our environment. We have provided some useful websites to explain further

Save it Make it Use it Our local council provide compost bins for us to make our own compost. A whole school effort is made to save peelings and cardboard and place them in the appropriate bins, The Eco Warriors collect daily, biodegradable peel bags from the bins and place them in the compost bins. We are on our third bin and are hoping to be using our own school made compost in the next year to help with our school planting and hopefully hold a plant stall in the Summer fair. Although the Eco Warriors work together as a team, they are split into smaller teams to carry out specific responsibilities.
