1 Summer Reading Program Co-ordinator (35 hours/week, 16 weeks) If you are outgoing, flexible, creative, and have an interest in new technology join us for the summer at the Stettler Public Library. The Summer Reading Program Coordinator plans and delivers programming for children and teens designed to foster a love of reading and provide opportunities to express creativity. Anticipated start date: May 2, The theme for 2016 is Wild! This summer, kids are encouraged to escape their everyday, step outside their ordinary and seek the unknown and untamed through reading. Whether it s outdoors, outrageous or out of bounds, the unexplored is calling, and with TD Summer Reading Club books, activities, and an unleashed imagination, kids can let go and find their wild this summer. TD Summer Reading Club website Duties and Responsibilities to develop activity plans and schedules for various age groups; to provide an opportunity for children to be involved in hands-on learning that will keep them engaged in various literacies including digital literacy and introductory STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, as well as with the library as a creative space; to organize imaginative weekly displays and contests; to partner with schools and other community groups and participate in community outreach activities; to promote the program within the community and at events, as well as liaising with local businesses and service organizations for sponsorships/prize donations; to co-ordinate guest speakers/performers and field trips. Activities may include storytelling, creating videos, introductory computer coding, 3D printing, outdoor games, development of interactive displays, art classes, crafts, singing, puppet plays; to develop promotional materials, including social networking and writing a column for the newspaper; to manage the summer program budget, report statistics, and submit program evaluations; to perform other duties as assigned. Requirements: Experience working with children is preferred. A background in Library and Information Studies, Elementary or Secondary Education, Early Childhood Development, Music, Art, Drama, or Computer Science would be an asset. Must be a returning student in fall of 2016; Satisfactory background screening including a Criminal Record Check; Must be available to work day, evening and weekend shifts.

3 Other Requirements The applicant should have an advanced proficiency in the English language, excellent computer and technology skills, including use of social media, experience working with children, and knowledge of the workings of a public library. The applicant must demonstrate maturity, strong interpersonal skills, creative ability, and enthusiasm for working on this project. Duration of Work This is a full-time summer position lasting 16 weeks with an anticipated start date of May 4, The work week will be 35 hours. Occasional weekend and evening availability is required. Education/Work Experience A background in Library and Information Studies, Elementary or Secondary Education, Early Childhood Development, Music, Art, Drama, Computer Science or Engineering would be an asset.

4 Responsibilities: Prepare and present early literacy programs, children's story times, puppet shows, and crafts. Plan and present programs for other audiences as required (e.g. teens, seniors, etc). Assist library branch staff with Summer Reading Club programming. Provide excellent customer service in accordance with the Library's community-led service philosophy. Perform other duties as assigned. Job Requirements: Completion of one year and enrolled in a related post-secondary program for 2016 (e.g. Library Studies, Education or Early Childhood Development). NOTE: Must be a returning student in fall of 2016 Experience working in customer service. Experience working with children is preferred. Experience preparing and presenting programs is an asset. Related library experience is an asset. This position involves day, evening and weekend shifts,

5 Under the direction of the Library Manager or, in the absence of the Library Manager, the Assistant Library Manager the Co-ordinator develops, plans and implements activities for the Summer Reading Program. The theme for 2015 is Play! Summertime is all about freedom - no school, no rules, no structure. You can make up each day, and every day is different. Whether you re on your own or with your friends, outside or inside or upside down, summer is the time for fun and play. For the summer of 2015, we re encouraging kids to see reading as play, and discover that the joyful, boundless and carefree feelings associated with play can just as easily be found in a great book. We want kids to have fun reading and share this joy, while they have the freedom to choose, explore, discover and play, any way they want. TD Summer Reading Club website The Summer Reading Program is designed to: a. attract children to the Stettler Public Library where they will enjoy exposure to books, reading, literacy (both print and digital), and related activities; b. allow children the chance to discover their local library as a fun and safe place to spend time, leading to a new generation of library users who carry their love of libraries into adulthood; c. provide an opportunity for children to be involved in hands-on learning that will keep them engaged in various literacies including digital literacy and introductory STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, as well as with the library as a creative space. Activities may include storytelling, guest speakers, creating videos, introductory computer coding, 3D printing, other technology/building activities, development of interactive displays, art classes, crafts, games, singing, puppet plays, contests, and field trips. Duties and Responsibilities a. to create and deliver a summer reading program for three age groups (ages 5-8, 9-12, and teen) b. to develop activity plans and timelines that can be used subsequently to help structure the program c. to manage in-library reading activities by organizing creative weekly displays and contests d. to build partnerships with local schools and other community groups and participate in outreach visits and library tours e. to promote and advertise the program within the community and at events, as well as liaising with local businesses and service organizations for sponsorships/prize donations

6 f. to co-ordinate guest speakers and field trips g. to develop brochures and other promotional materials, including use of social networking and writing a column for the local newspaper h. to manage the summer program budget, report statistics, and submit program evaluations Other Requirements The applicant should have an advanced proficiency in the English language, excellent computer and technology skills, including use of social media, experience working with children, and knowledge of the workings of a public library. The applicant must demonstrate maturity, strong interpersonal skills, creative ability, and enthusiasm for working on this project. The applicant must have been in school full-time at some point during the previous 12 months, and must be planning on returning to full-time studies in the fall. As a condition of employment, the applicant selected must pass a Vulnerable Sector check. Duration of Work This is a full-time summer position lasting 16 weeks with an anticipated start date of May 4, The work week will be 35 hours. Occasional weekend and evening availability is required. Education/Work Experience A background in Library and Information Studies, Elementary or Secondary Education, Early Childhood Development, Music, Art, Drama, Computer Science or Engineering would be an asset.
