1 New Student Programs Summer Leadership 2011 SUMMER LEADER QUALIFICATIONS: There are a variety of qualities that a summer leader must have. We are looking for students who possess the following: A desire to work with students, families, guests, faculty, and staff High energy and positive attitude Positive and effective communication skills Ability to work effectively with and within a group Integrity and enthusiasm Problem solving and trouble-shooting abilities Good academic standing (2.3 cumulative GPA after both winter and spring quarters) Good disciplinary standing Must be a full-time student during spring 2011 quarter Must be registered for fall 2011 classes at Central prior to being hired Leadership development potential A sense of humor and fun A large majority of the students attending Discover! Orientation and Wildcat Welcome Weekend will be living in residence halls, so knowledge of the residence hall system is desired. Summer Leaders must abide by the Prescribed Code of Conduct for students set forth by the Division of Academic and Student Life and NEVER engage in unlawful or unethical behaviors with Orientation, Business Week, and/or Wildcat Welcome Weekend participants. PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE TIME REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION, STUDENTS WHO ARE HIRED TO BE ORIENTATION LEADERS AND/OR BUSINESS WEEK COUNSELORS MAY NOT BE ENROLLED IN SUMMER COURSES THAT MEET (YOU MAY TAKE ONLINE COURSES AS LONG AS THEY DO NOT INTERFERE WITH YOUR ORIENTATION LEADER AND/OR BUSINESS WEEK RESPONSIBILITIES) APPLICATION PROCESS: The application/cover letter, résumé, applicant questions, and two letters of reference are due in the Stephens Whitney Residence Life Office no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, February 25, Interviews will be conducted from February 28-March 15, Applicants will sign up for an interview day and time when they turn in their application at the Stephens Whitney Residence Life Office. There is a mandatory spring training session for Discover! Orientation Leaders, Business Week Counselors, and WWW Leaders on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
2 AVAILABLE POSITIONS (DESCRIPTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES) DISCOVER! ORIENTATION LEADER (OL) The Discover! Orientation Leader (OL) position is an outstanding opportunity for students interested in gaining leadership skills and developing future employment skills. An OL conveys information to new students and their families/guests about CWU s programs and services. The OL assists with all orientation events and plays a vital role in facilitating the adjustment of new students to the campus and the community. The OL assists with orientation events by leading discussion groups with incoming students and family members, assisting in the preparation of orientation activities and materials, explaining academic opportunities and procedures, acquainting new students with campus services and building locations, aiding in the advisement and registration process and discussing sensitive issues. In addition, the OL will attend the spring 2011 (Thursday, April 21 st ) and summer 2011 training sessions. Leaders will begin summer training on Monday, June 20 th and conclude work on Friday, July 15 th (dates may change slightly as the schedule is finalized). DISCOVER! ORIENTATION LEADER AND BUSINESS WEEK COUNSELOR (OL/BWC) The Orientation Leader/Business Week Counselor (OL/BWC) has all the responsibilities of the OL position in addition to assisting with Business Week events by providing supervision to assigned student groups, helping students to abide by the code of conduct of Business Week, facilitating and supervising free time activities, performing nightly bed checks and attending scheduled meetings with Business Week Director, staff, supervisors, and co-counselors. These students will also work with transfer student orientation sessions. Working as a Business Week Counselor does not require prior Business Week Experience or any specialized knowledge of the Business field. OL/BWCs will attend the spring 2011 (Thursday, April 21 st ) and summer 2011 training sessions. Leaders who are hired to work with Business week will begin summer training on Monday, June 20 th and conclude work on Wednesday, July 27 th (date may change slightly as the schedule is finalized). Because Business Week includes minor students, applicants who are chosen as Business Week Counselors must submit to a Washington State Background Check prior to hiring. WILDCAT WELCOME WEEKEND LEADER (WWWL) A Wildcat Welcome Weekend Leader (WWWL) conveys information to new students about the programs and services provided by CWU. The WWWL assists with all activities pertaining to opening weekend. This position requires the applicant to have a high level of energy. For those students who currently hold positions of leadership on campus, this is an excellent opportunity to receive compensation for the work in which you are already involved. Plus, WWWL are permitted to move in to the residence halls early. WWWLs will attend the spring 2011 (Thursday, April 21 st ) and fall 2011 training sessions. WWW leaders will begin on Thursday, September 15 th and work until Monday, September 19 th.
3 BENEFITS: Discover! Orientation Leaders are remunerated: $8.67/hour for hours/week (less applicable taxes) from June 20- July 15, 2011 (with July 2-5 off) 2 meals per day during all training days and Discover! Orientation sessions On-campus housing for duration of employment 2 Discover! Orientation staff shirts Discover! Orientation Leader/Business Week Counselors All benefits of Discover!
