SUSTAINABILILITY ROBERT MONDAVI TWIN OAKSROBERT MONDAVI PRIVATE SELECTION WOODBRIDGE BY ROBERT MONDAVI ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY HIS NAME IS ON THE BOTTLE. HIS STORY IS IN IT. Through tireless innovation, an uncompromising eye for quality, and an unshakable faith in California s vineyards, Robert Mondavi created a collection of California wines for the world to enjoy. With infectious enthusiasm he traveled the globe, making believers out of millions of wine lovers, and putting Napa on the map. He began exporting his wines in 1972, and today his legacy lives on as his wines are sold in more than 55 countries.

MONDAVI FAMILY HISTORY In 1906, Mr. Mondavi s parents, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, emigrated from Sassoferrato in the Marche region of Italy to Minnesota. Growing up, Mr. Mondavi was greatly influenced by Old World traditions of enjoying food and wine. During Prohibition, the family moved to Lodi, California, not far from where the Woodbridge Winery operates today. There, Cesare Mondavi established a successful fruit packing business under the name: C. Mondavi and Sons. Primarily used for home winemaking, grapes were packed and shipped to customers on the East Coast. The family later moved to Napa and took ownership of the Charles Krug Winery, one of just six wineries in Napa at the time, all of which were making jug wine. After Cesare died in 1959, Rosa, along with Mr. Mondavi and his brother Peter, took over responsibility for the Krug business. Mr. Mondavi long believed that the Napa Valley could produce grapes good enough to create wines that rival the world s finest. His desire to make fine wine fell on deaf ears and eventually resulted in his decision to leave the family business, at the age of 53, to start his own winery. My mother, Rosa, taught me the power of love and the virtues of hard work, strong family ties, an open heart, a generous spirit and fine home cooking enjoyed with good wine around the communal table.

ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY To succeed and have a happy life, you need common sense, a commitment to hard work, and the courage to go your own way. Interest is not enough you must be passionate about what you do.

THE FOUNDING of ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY With little money but full of energy and vision, Robert Mondavi would change the course of the U.S. wine industry. Realizing a long-held dream to create excellent Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the great wines of the world, he founded the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966, opening the door to the future of American fine wine. Mr. Mondavi knew that the place to begin was in the vineyard. For the home of his fledgling winery, he chose a 12-acre site in the To Kalon Vineyard a historic property long regarded as one of Napa Valley s finest. The vineyard s optimum sun exposure and rainfall combined with low-fertility, well-drained, gravelly clay loam soils were first appreciated by Hamilton Walker Crabb, one of Napa Valley s winegrowing pioneers, who purchased the land and planted it to vineyard in the 1860s. The outstanding quality of his grapes inspired Crabb to name the vineyard To Kalon, ancient Greek for the beautiful or the highest good. Robert Mondavi felt the same way. Mr. Mondavi hired architect Cliff May to design his winery as an homage to California s early missions. The warm, earth-toned arms of the winery soon embraced visitors for tastings, tours, and cultural programs common activities at many wineries today, but a radical idea at the time. Mr. Mondavi said, I had the notion that we could make great wines equal to the greatest wines in the world, and everybody said it was impossible. Robert Mondavi Wines is now the THIRD MOST POWERFUL WINE BRAND in the WORLD as determined by THE POWER 100 in NAPA VALLEY SAN FRANCISCO

WINE, FOOD, and the ARTS Educating the public about wine, food, and the arts has always been part of the philosophy behind Robert Mondavi Winery. It was one of the first to offer tours, culinary programs, concerts, and art exhibits. Mr. Mondavi established programs for tastings and tours to enhance visitors understanding of the world of fine wine, recognizing that the best way to encourage enthusiasm for wine was to educate visitors every step of the way. Mr. Mondavi s namesake winery has since become a quintessential Napa Valley experience for over 100,000 visitors from more than 25 countries per year. MARGRIT BIEVER MONDAVI :: Winery Ambassador As Vice President of Cultural Affairs at Robert Mondavi Winery, Margrit Biever Mondavi, the wife of Robert Mondavi, has been a driving force behind the initiatives to educate the public about wine, food, and the arts. A native of Appenzell, Switzerland, Margrit is considered a pioneering woman of the modern-day California wine industry. She joined the winery in 1967, pursuing a life-long interest in uniting wine with fine arts, music, and culinary artistry. Under her direction, Robert Mondavi Winery developed original cultural and culinary arts programs that are now benchmarks for the wine world. With the enthusiastic support of her husband, she created a showplace for painters, sculptors, photographers, jazz and classical musicians, and the great chefs and winemakers of the world. Margrit founded the winery s ever-popular Summer Music Festival in 1969 as a benefit for the Napa Valley Symphony. She also introduced a program of cooking classes to develop guests appreciation of great food paired with fine wine. She introduced the Great Chefs of France and the Great Chefs of America programs internationally respected culinary series that are now known simply as Great Chefs at Robert Mondavi Winery. An accomplished linguist, Margrit today serves as an ambassador for the winery to a wide range of international audiences.

BREAKTHROUGH INNOVATIONS For more than four decades, Robert Mondavi Winery has led California s wine industry and much of the world with innovations in winegrowing and winemaking. The vision of Mr. Mondavi, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 94, continues to inspire the winery and vineyard teams to always reach higher. WINEGROWING INNOVATION Natural Winegrowing Robert Mondavi Winery was the first in California to formally adopt a natural farming approach to the cultivation of estate vineyards. This approach extends beyond organic farming and considers overall wine quality and the impact on the greater environment. In 1995, the winery, with the Napa County Resource Conservation District, created the Napa Sustainable Winegrowing Group. Rootstock and Clonal Trials Robert Mondavi Winery has applied an innovative research-and-development process in matching rootstocks with soil to enhance wine quality. The 31-acre To Kalon Vineyard H-block is dedicated to the study of Cabernet family varieties. Vine Density The winery began experimenting with vine spacing in 1985, based on experiences with the Opus One joint venture. In the European-style high-density format, vines are forced to compete with each other for sustenance, resulting in lower yields, smaller berries, and more intense fruit flavors. Collaboration with NASA In response to Phylloxera, Robert Mondavi Winery teamed up with NASA and pioneered site-specific farming using aerial imaging and data analysis technology to study variables in cultivating wine grapes, leading to improved precision in pruning, irrigation, pest control, and other practices that impact wine quality. Recently the winery worked with NASA to develop vigor maps to measure vine stress. Napa Valley Appellation System In the mid-1980s, Robert Mondavi and his son, Tim, helped define the appellations within Napa Valley by using the valley s geographic features and history to create a meaningful structure of American Viticultural Areas, including Napa Valley, Oakville, Stags Leap District, and Rutherford AVAs. WINEMAKING INNOVATION WINEMAKING FIRSTS As early as the late 1960s, Robert Mondavi Winery helped introduce to California such techniques as cold fermentation, stainless steel tanks, and French oak barrels. GENTLE HANDLING AND GRAVITY FLOW The wines are transferred as gently as possible throughout the winemaking process through a gravity-flow system. FUMÉ BLANC Historically, Californian Sauvignon Blanc wines were sweet and ordinary. In the late 1960s, Mr. Mondavi popularized Fumé Blanc a name he coined for his high-quality, dry-fermented, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc. The move is acknowledged as the catalyst for recognition of this wine variety in the United States.

THE CREATION of TO KALON CELLAR Robert Mondavi had a vision to create a state-of-the-art cellar for producing and barrel-aging his Reserve and District wines, and combining traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovations such as: Starting with grapes grown in the highest-density-planted vineyard in California for more intense fruit flavors Handpicking whole clusters straight from the vineyard during the cool morning hours, where they re hand-sorted, destemmed, and gravity-fed directly into French oak fermenters Using oak tanks that naturally maintain consistent temperatures during fermentation and maceration, resulting in the best integration of flavors Extending maceration in the oak fermenters, providing deeper color, softer integrated tannins, and enhanced texture Gravity-flow handling, ensuring the preservation of subtle flavors and aromas Using all-natural techniques with minimal filtration and fining to produce the most expressive wines Aging all wines entirely in French oak Planning for the To Kalon Cellar project began in 1996, construction began in 1999, and the renovated winery was ready for the 2000 harvest. Establish a goal just beyond what you think you can do. When you achieve that, establish another and another. This will teach you to embrace risk.

THE VINEYARDS OAKVILLE AVA :: TO KALON VINEYARD 450 acres/182 hectares Robert Mondavi selected To Kalon as the site for his winery in This vineyard stood head and shoulders above those around it, said Mr. Mondavi. It was a vineyard with a distinguished history and a magical nature. Ideal soils, sunlight, and rain to my eye, the vineyard was a treasure. To Kalon has since proven its worth when it was named the CALIFORNIA VINEYARD of the YEAR by the California Farm Bureau Federation in To Kalon Vineyard is largely planted with Cabernet Sauvignon along with the grapes that enhance the variety in a blend, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The vineyard s alluvial soils produce classically structured, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon. This exceptional site is also home to some of the oldest vines in the U.S. These 65-year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines, and the Semillon we blend with it, enhance the texture and complexity of our Fumé Blanc Reserve. STAGS LEAP DISTRICT AVA :: WAPPO HILL VINEYARD 311 acres/125 hectares Wappo Hill Vineyard is named for the Native American tribe which considered this hill a sacred place. Planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc, Wappo Hill Vineyard lies within the Stags Leap District, the first viticultural area in the U.S. to be granted AVA status based on the distinctiveness of its soil. Volcanic soils produce Cabernet Sauvignon of power and elegance, Merlot of structure and finesse, and Sauvignon Blanc of mouthwatering freshness. CARNEROS AVA Spanning the southernmost portion of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the Carneros AVA lies just north of the San Pablo Bay, where exposure to ocean breezes makes this the Napa Valley s coolest vineyard area. The location is ideally suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive in the cool, lengthy growing season a season filled with warm summer days tempered by marine winds and fog. 10 WINEMAKER GENEVIEVE JANSSENS In the years since its founding, a steady stream of winemaking talent has flowed through the winery including Warren Winiarski, the winery s first winemaker; Mike Grgich; Zelma Long; Mr. Mondavi s son Tim, who directed the winemaking team from 1974 until 2005; and presently, Genevieve Janssens. As the current torchbearer of Mr. Mondavi s vision, carrying on his legacy is both a joy and an honor for Genevieve who has been at the winemaking helm since Born to a French family in Morocco and raised in France, Genevieve s formal wine education began under the tutelage of the legendary three fathers of modern enology Jean Ribereau-Gayon; his son, Pascal Ribereau-Gayon; and Emile Peynaud with whom she studied at the University of Bordeaux, France. Making good wine is a skill. Fine wine an art. Genevieve was initially drawn to the Robert Mondavi Winery s philosophy of winemaking and winegrowing, but also recognized and appreciated Mr. Mondavi s holistic approach to quality. Inspired, she moved from Bordeaux, France, to the Napa Valley in 1978 and began working at the Robert Mondavi Winery as a lab technician and an assistant enologist. Deeply interested in California s winemaking revolution, Genevieve continued exploring the state for the next decade. Her connection to Mr. Mondavi was reestablished in 1989 when she became Director of Production at Opus One Winery. In 1997, she came full circle as the Director of Winemaking at the Robert Mondavi Winery. Genevieve says her mission at Robert Mondavi Winery is to, produce wines of great density and rich fruit character wines of elegance and finesse that complement food. In this way, we combine the structure of the finest French wines with powerful fruit, California-style. Genevieve has received one of the industry s highest honors, being named WINE ENTHUSIAST S 2010 WINE STAR WINEMAKER of the YEAR

WOODBRIDGE BY ROBERT MONDAVI Wine to me is passion. It s family and friends. It s warmth of heart and generosity of spirit.

THE HISTORY of WOODBRIDGE WINERY After the success of his Napa Valley winery, Robert Mondavi pursued his second vision of creating delicious wines for everyday enjoyment. Having grown up in Lodi, he knew the region s excellent reputation for growing grapes that were capable of producing quality wines at affordable prices. In 1979, Mr. Mondavi acquired the Cherokee Vineyards Association, a local cooperative of grape growers that was established in the 1930s. He renamed the operation, Woodbridge Winery, after a nearby town and began making red and white table wines applying the agricultural and production practices he developed in the Napa Valley. Mr. Mondavi s desire to create appealing, drinkable wines is the same vision that the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi team led by winemaker Todd Ziemann operates with today. LODI SAN FRANCISCO

WINEMAKING and WINE STYLE As a fourth-generation Lodi native, Todd Ziemann, Director of Winemaking at Woodbridge, feels a tremendous affinity for the land and the wine it produces. His passion for crafting elegant wines for everyday enjoyment is a perfect fit for the small winery traditions of Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi. By tasting all of the lots separately to determine their specific flavor profiles, the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi winemaking team ensures that the final blends are rich and well balanced. Winery practices, such as leaving the wines on the lees for greater complexity and aging select lots in French and American oak, result in approachable, clean wines. A LEGACY of SUCCESS Winner of 25+ Platinum, Gold, and Silver medals in 2010 Named the Best Buy brand by WINE ENTHUSIAST in March 2011 The team spends as much time studying the vineyards as they do crafting the wines. Every decision we make, from harvesting the grapes at their peak to individual lot fermentation, results in wines with consistently great flavors, says Ziemann. We work closely with our growers to know the vineyards inside and out, which is just about the most important thing we can do. The team sources each grape variety from the vineyards that have the best climate and soil conditions. They check the vineyards daily, monitoring the development of sugar, flavor, and acidity harvesting only at peak levels of flavor. They also work to maintain the most natural vineyard management processes, in keeping with their philosophy of land stewardship. The end result is wines that are perfect for sharing with family and friends at a communal table. This honors Mr. Mondavi s belief that wines should enrich everyday experiences.

Whatever you do, pour yourself into it. ROBERT MONDAVI PRIVATE SELECTION

THE HISTORY of ROBERT MONDAVI PRIVATE SELECTION While the early part of his career was focused on producing world-class wine in Napa Valley and wines for everyday enjoyment at his Woodbridge Winery in Lodi, Robert Mondavi was also intrigued by the untapped potential of other areas of California. He quickly learned that California s winegrowing regions vary tremendously in terms of climate, soil, and topography. In particular, Mr. Mondavi was quick to see the potential of areas like California s Central Coast. Beginning in the early 1990s, Mr. Mondavi began buying vineyards in this area. His instincts were quickly rewarded with its moderate climate and diverse soils, the Central Coast AVA turned out to be the ideal location for growing many popular California varietals. Out of Mr. Mondavi s success in this emerging region came a new brand, Robert Mondavi Coastal, founded in 1994 and later renamed Robert Mondavi Private Selection to celebrate the diversity of California s coastal winegrowing regions, from the Central Coast to the North Coast AVAs. His winemakers were instructed to select only the best grapes from vineyards ideally suited for each variety. The result was quality wines that are elegant enough for special occasions yet priced for everyday. It s pleasant to review one s accomplishments, but it s exciting to grapple with new challenges. SAN FRANCISCO CENTRAL COAST

WINEMAKING and WINE STYLE Director of Winemaking Rick Boyer graduated from UC Davis in 1979 with a degree in plant science and spent most of his time crafting wines in California s Monterey County. In 2005, he brought over 20 years of experience to the winemaking team of Robert Mondavi Private Selection. Elegant and sophisticated, the wines of Robert Mondavi Private Selection reflect a strong commitment to selecting the best vineyards throughout California for each varietal. Combining time-honored techniques with modern innovation, the approachable wines of Robert Mondavi Private Selection feature bright fruit expression and exceptional balance. They are a reflection of California s diverse growing regions, as well as winemaking craftsmanship. Mr. Mondavi s belief that great California wines embody character and style is the signature of these elegant and affordable wines. WINES of NOTABLE DISTINCTION Winner of Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Named Value Brand of the Year by WINE & SPIRITS in June 2011 In keeping with Mr. Mondavi s vision of enriching life through wine, Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines go elegantly and easily to the table for every occasion. The California wine culture was built on the can-do spirit and will continue to thrive on the can-do spirit.

ROBERT MONDAVI TWIN OAKS Drink what you like, and like what you drink.

THE STORY of ROBERT MONDAVI TWIN OAKS Launched in the late 1990s, the Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks range of wines was the result of a successful partnership between Woodbridge Winery and its growers from the Lodi region. The range consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Zinfandel, and Zinfandel Rose, and was named in honor of the Twin Oaks series of vineyards, which uses many of the sustainable agriculture practices adamantly supported by Mr. Mondavi. In addition to the Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi wines, Todd Ziemann is also in charge of crafting Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks. In the words of Mr. Mondavi, his goal is to create wines that are clean and easy to drink, bringing the joy of wine to everyday life. Find a job you love and you ll never have to work a day in your life. LODI SAN FRANCISCO
