Sky Tower at University Hospital Healthcare San Antonio, TX 1 Million sf $778 Million
SKY TOWER To help meet the healthcare needs of San Antonio s growing community and trauma region, the University Health System Capital Improvement Program committed over $778M for the expansion and renovation of the University Hospital Medical Center campus. This new and updated facility will help reduce wait times, expand access and offer the latest technologies and advanced treatment options. The new trauma tower provides 35 surgical suites, an additional 420 patient rooms and an expanded Emergency Department (66 treatment areas, including 10 trauma rooms). Additional renovation of clinical spaces in the two original hospital towers is planned after completion of new construction. Other construction includes the expansion of patient and staff parking. Visitors will utilize the renovated 3.5-level, 320,000 sf North Garage, which has 535 parking spaces. Staff will use the new 11-level, 1.7 million sf West Garage which contains 3,324 parking spaces, as well as a heliport and a sweeping bridge connection to the new hospital tower. The amount of green space was increased on the site by one acre with the inclusion of a large park-like green space called the Jardin. This space provides visitors a respite from the main flow of pedestrian traffic while walking through a meadow of native grasses. In addition, two roof gardens were designed for public and private use, allowing access to secured outdoor seating areas and public art while providing visitors and staff space to relax in the shade and to be surrounded by native plants. Gold Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) through the US Green Building Council is being pursued. Green design strategies are being implemented to achieve energy savings, water efficiency and reduction in CO2 emissions, while creating spaces that are efficient, welcoming and healing. Evidence-based design suggests that recovery times are shorter and pain medication use is less when patients are able to see trees through a window or to experience nature. Relaxation facilitates healing and we believe that we have aided the healing process through the development of the green spaces at UHS Medical Center.

SITE + LANDSCAPE In addition to adding 1 million sf of parking garage, and almost 1 million sf of new patient tower, the UHS Sky Tower is increasing the amount of green space on its site with the inclusion of two new roof gardens and a large park-like green space called the Jardin. All green spaces may be used for areas of respite for visitors, staff and patients. Wide sidewalks lined by shade trees allow visitors and staff to comfortably walk from bus stops and parking spaces to the hospital. Visitors can walk through the Jardin to get away from the main flow of pedestrian traffic and relax while walking through a meadow of native grasses. The roof garden on the main floor provides a secure and comfortable outdoor area for families to gather while waiting for a loved one. The garden offers shady areas to sit and relax among native plants and public artwork. A small roof garden north of the public garden on the main floor is available for staff members only. This private roof garden provides a respite from the noise and busyness of the hospital. Outdoor seating amidst native plants with views of public art is available in this garden as well. The roof garden on the 10th floor is available by key access for staff and the accompanied patient. This garden also has enough space to accommodate luncheons or evening group events. Shade, native plants and artwork make this garden a comfortable place to relax within the secure walls of the hospital.
INTERIORS RVK was the local interiors team that developed and procured the architectural contract administration, interior finish, furniture, signage and art installation drawings for the 12-story Sky Tower. Each floor is associated with a color, through paint + art + fabrics + signage, that was envisioned to assist family members and nursing staff to navigate the 420 patient rooms. The interiors team developed the furniture selections through a Furniture Fair where many potential products were reviewed and tested by the hospital staff. To continue the LEED Gold Certification for Green Sustainable Design, all furniture maintains a percentage of recycled content. RVK interiors continue to facilitate the furniture standards for the building to ensure an interconnected expression throughout the building. 745 E. Mulberry Avenue, Suite 601 San Antonio, TX
NORTH GARAGE, WEST GARAGE & HELIPORT Because the West Garage had to be partially open before the Tower could commence, five permit packages were developed in coordination with the Construction Management team. RVK was also responsible for site planning, site development, landscape and hardscape, site circulation and surface parking. A total of 4,420 spaces are provided on site including all structured and surface parking. RVK also helped coordinate the art program for the garages. RVK was Architect of Record for the new 11-story, 1.17 million sf West Garage, which accommodates 3,324 cars. This structure also includes a security command center, AirLIFE operations, and a heliport for three medical transport helicopters on the 11th level deck. Fueling systems and fire suppression for the heliport are also included. This structure houses staff parking and connects to the hospital tower by means of a two-story, 200 bridge which also includes a separate trauma deck to connect the heliport to the trauma center. RVK was also Architect of Record for the renovation of the existing North Garage, which is 320,000 sf and houses 535 vehicles. This garage is the primary visitor facility due to its proximity to the Sky Tower, and includes Emergency Center parking and a hospital access atrium. Visitor revenue control and dynamic messaging are provided. A three-level bridge connects to portions of the West Garage for overflow parking capacity. Both garages contain extensive security and duress provisions and wireless capability. The West Garage is designed to LEED Gold and includes rainwater harvesting and T5 lighting. The program reconciles limited site footprint, existing parking requirements and displacement, construction sequencing, patient and staff safety, heliport and fueling, traffic planning and revenue control.
