There are plans to increase the number of hotel rooms within the next few years. 3 SkillsFuture is a national effort to promote and encourage skills mastery, so that every Singaporean can be enabled to develop to their fullest, in every job. A tripartite SkillsFuture Council, which is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, was formed to further the SkillsFuture agenda. Only Singaporeans and Permanent Residents are eligible for the Earn and Learn Programme. 1. Tight Coupling of Work and Discipline of Study Placement of graduates with best-matched sponsoring companies, with tight coupling of work and discipline of study. 2. On-the-Job Training (OJT) as one of the Key Components of Training Training leading to industry recognised certificates will be conducted at the workplace through OJT. 3. Well-Structured Training and Career Development Practical applied skills embedded in the programme through OJT, facilitated learning and work-based projects Guidance from Mentors/Trainers 2-year Career Development Plan Incorporation of job rotation and overseas attachment applicable 5 6

5 awarded by Company-based projects (120 hours spread over 12 months) Post-Diploma Certificate 1 in Hospitality Financial Management (120 hours over 20 weeks) Post-Diploma Certificate 2 in Hospitality Operations Management (120 hours over 20 weeks) Participants will undergo a structured training programme including on-the-job training, facilitated/e-learning lessons and company-based projects. The 12-month course will lead to a Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Business Management. Successful participants will receive a competitive starting salary as a full-time employee to the hotel. Upon completion of the programme, participants will potentially receive a commensurate wage increment and career progression to a position with supervisory responsibilities. Graduate Outcomes: The objective of the proposed Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Business Management is to develop graduates with the following graduate outcomes: Hotel Service Trainee 12 Months Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Business Management Hotel Service Executive or positions with supervisory responsibilities a. Possess strong grasp of key concepts and knowledge of the hospitality business b. Possess enhanced knowledge and skills in managing the operational departments of a hotel c. Manage fire safety and operational building costs by applying alternative energy and cost saving measures; d. Evolve operational processes by applying technology tools to enhance service quality in the hotel; and, e. Able to evaluate market trends and make strategic decisions that can impact the sustainability and profitability of the hotel business. 7 8

6 Specialist Diploma in Hospitality Business Management Module Post-Diploma Certificate 1 in Hospitality Financial Management Financial Management in Hospitality This module explores the principals of finance in hospitality. It will examine the mathematical aspect of finance, sales accountability, working capital and capital asset management. The module will also cover financing costs, property valuation and the ability to analyse reports. Students will be able to apply practical approaches to read, interpret and analyse financial statements, as well as management reports, of the hospitality industry. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of accounting principles to successfully manage a hospitality related business or department. Marketing and Revenue Management This module aims to instil in students the ability to identify and explore opportunities for revenue and operational optimisation in the Hospitality industry. Students will be able to appreciate how revenue goals of the hotel are directly impacted by the application of sales & marketing techniques. The module will cover strategies including the effective management of electronic channel of distribution, sales & marketing structures, and modelling of forecasting and pricing. These strategies will have a direct impact on the profitability of the various forms of accommodation. Students will also be equipped with the ability to form and evaluate hotel rate plans; identify trends & patterns; forecast length of stays and manage occupancy. In addition, there will be exposure to IdeaS and Global Distribution channels. This module will also provide students with the skills to manage and optimise revenues and yield. Business Law in Hospitality Synopses Post-Diploma Certificate 2 in Hospitality Operations Management Managing Service Quality in Hotels This module provides an insight to the key operating departments within the hotel environment. Students will analyse performances in guest service levels, as well as the different processes in place to manage service. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of concepts of operational brand standards of chain hotels, and examine how service standards can be used to improve the competitiveness of a hotel. Facilities and Building Management This module examines energy costs in a hotel incurred by Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems. Students will explore renewable engineering solutions to effectively manage these costs. These include designing facilities and systems for food and beverage provisioning, telecommunication systems, and also close coordination and cooperation with renovation projects. Topics on fire safety and equipment management will also be covered in the module. Strategic Human Resource Management This module aims to provide an insight into the relationship between the management of human resources, and the business strategies of the hotel. Students will apply knowledge to evaluate the functional roles, and examine specific areas of human resource management, in relation to a hotel. This includes an understanding of the various strategies on talent management and staff retention. In today s fast paced world, hotel managers are increasingly tasked to make decisions concerning their guests, which directly impact the legal standing of the hotel. This module aims to equip students with knowledge of hospitality laws covering injuries or accidents to guests whilst in the hotel. Also examined are topics on hospitality contracts, the hotel s due care and responsibility as an operator, as well as regulatory and administrative concerns in this industry. 9 10
