National Sporting Code - Auto Cycle Union (ACU) 2013 Handbook. B. AGAI Vol 1, Chap 5. General 1. The first recorded Army Motorcycle Championship took place in 1938 in Rushmore Arena in Aldershot. Since that time the Championship has been in run on an annual basis (with the exception of the war years) and despite the regular changes and challenges that we face today still has a strong and dedicated following. In 2010 Army motorcycling ceased to be a training activity and moved to become recognised sport status, although this was a major challenge, the sport has come through it with a revised competition format. This DIN outlines the details for the 2013 Championships and builds upon previous successful Championships. 2. The competition will be organised and sponsored by RHQ REME by kind permission of Comdt ARMCEN with assistance from ARTD 3. The competition will be in the form of a three stage trial and will be held under these regulations and the Sporting Code of the Auto cycle Union (ACU).

2 Aims 4. The aims are as follows: Status a. To determine the Army Champion. b. To enhance and test the riding skills of individuals in a competitive environment. c. To decide the Anglo/Swedish competition. 5. This is an Army Sports Control Board (ASCB) authorised event and it therefore meets the criteria for public funding for travel to and from the event (JSP 752 Chap 4, Sect 8). Participants are considered to be on duty when travelling to, participating, officiating or organising authorised events; they are off duty in any activity not required to meet the primary aims of the authorised event, such as social events (Ref B Annex J). Locations 6. The locations are as follows: a. Pre-event training 9/10 Oct 13 at Tidworth, CCDA, SP9 7DX. An entirely off road circuit of approximately 10km in length. b. Championships 12/13 Oct 13 at Bovington Camp, Bovington, Dorset, BH20 6JA. Accommodation transit bed spaces are available in Stanley Barracks and will be issued on a first come first served basis. Details will be provided in the final instructions. Units should plan on bringing their own tented accommodation or equivalent. Meals 8. Feeding arrangements have yet to be confirmed. Units/Individuals should therefore plan on being self sufficient. Eligibility 9. The event will be run under the authority of the Army Sports Control Board (ASCB) and will therefore attract on duty status. An Auto Cycle Union (ACU) Restricted permit will also be obtained allowing for guest riders. The Championships will be open to: a. Serving members from the Army both regular and reserve are eligible to ride. A current BAMA membership card will be required as confirmation of eligibility or entries will incur a surcharge for BAMA membership.

3 b. Regular and reserve members of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force may ride on an invitation basis. A current ID card/bama membership card or ACU licence will be required as confirmation of eligibility. c. Retired members of the Army, MoD civil servants and guests may ride on an invitation basis. In this case ACU competition licences are compulsory and will be checked to prior to acceptance of their entry. The event will be run under a 3 Stage Trial permit and therefore day licences will not be available for purchase through the organiser. 10. The event is open to the following rider and motorcycle classes: a. Novice and Expert. Novice riders must negotiate the easy route and Experts must negotiate the hard route. Riders formally declared Experts may ride the easy route on a no award basis. b. Motorcycle classes; MX, Enduro, Trail and Trial. 11. Motorcycles may be Regiment/Corps owned or individually owned machines. The MoD shall have no liability for damage occurred to any machine, prior to or during the event. 12. Teams. Team entries must comply with the following criteria: a. Army teams consist of two riders on any class of machine. Riders must be on the posted strength of the same unit, but can be of any status combination (all Experts, all Novices or a combination of both). b. Veterans/Guest teams consist of two riders on any class of machine. Riders are not eligible for the main Army trophies, but can compete against each other on a non-award basis. Veterans and Guest (RAF) teams may wish to provide their own trophy; in such case the organisers would be happy to facilitate the running of a competition. Anglo-Swedish Competition 13. Due to the operational deployment of the Swedish team manager there will be no competition in Veteran s Competition 14. A veteran s class will be included in the event. A veteran is defined as a person who is 40 years of age or older and who has previously served in the Army both regular or reserves. The competition format will be identical to the main Championships and there will be a separate presentation during the main prize giving. Those veterans previously graded Expert may elect to ride the easy route on a no award basis. All veterans must hold a current ACU licence. Guests 15. The Army MCA has various affiliations with other motorcycle clubs, RAF MSA, CSMA, MCC and the Police to name but a few. Riders from these organisations will be known as guest riders and there will be a separate presentation during the main prize

4 giving. They may ride any class of motorcycle, either the hard or easy route. All guests must hold a current ACU licence. Officials 16. The following officials are appointed: a. Assistant Clerk of the Course WO2 T JAMES Sequence of Events 17. The following sequence of events is a guide only, exact timings will be issued in the final instructions. a. Training Camp. A training camp will be held at Tidworth over the period 9/10 Oct 13. The aim of the camp is to teach Novice riders the skills required for Trials and Enduro riding and will be organised and run by some of the top riders in the Army past and present. It will also include periods on motorcycle set up and maintenance. The camp will run from the afternoon of 9 th Oct through to pm on the 10 th Oct 13. The morning of the 11 th Oct 13 is reserved for maintenance and movement to Bovington for the Championships. Those attending should inform the Secretary of the Meeting by completing the box on the entry form. b. Technical examination. Machine technical examination will be open from 1600hrs 11 th Oct 13 and close at 2000hrs. It will be open for late arrivals from hrs 12 th Oct 13. After the technical examination, the machines will remain the responsibility of the owner for the duration of the Championships. All machines must be presented and pass a technical inspection prior to the start of the Championships. The organisers retain the right to refuse a competitor to start if the machine is deemed to be poorly maintained, noisy or dangerous. The following regulations apply: (1) Machine Preparation. Machine must be presented in a clean condition. Particular attention will be given to the brakes, throttle return and sprocket covers. Lights, Panniers, pannier frames, racks, directional indicators and ancillaries may be removed is appropriate. (2) Competition Number Plates. Number plates must be fitted to the front and sides of the machines. Numbers are to be 150mm high in the following format: (a) Experts Black numbers on a green background (b) Novices Black numbers on a yellow background (c) Veterans/Guests White numbers on a black background.

5 (3) To reduce land degradation only Enduro, Trail and Trials tyres (road legal with E mark) may be fitted. Used Motocross tyres will be acceptable for Novice riders only and this will be policed during the technical examination. Tyres must not be changed during the event without the permission of the organisers. (4) Crash helmets are to be checked at the technical examination and must be ACU approved, silver or gold standard or the EU equivalent. b. Documents Check. All competitors are to produce either a current Mod 90/BAMA membership card or a valid ACU licence at the booking in process. c. Competitors Briefings. On the Friday evening there will be a competitors briefing. The briefing will cover camp administration, details of the competition and other points of interest. A shorter briefing will be held on the Saturday evening to cover admin points for the Sunday. All competitors should attend. d. Riders Dress. Civilian pattern off road riding clothing is allowed. Body armour or similar protection is mandatory for Stage Three Stage Trial a. Stage 1. Saturday am. Up to 10 Observed Sections with a generous time allowance giving plenty time for riders to walk the sections; trials penalties apply as defined in the ACU handbook (TSR22B). The trial will be non stop. At some point during this stage a Graded hill may be ridden. b. Stage 2. Saturday pm. The same Observed Sections are ridden. The sections may be altered or ridden in reverse order, but timings are tightened considerably; trials penalties apply as defined in the ACU handbook. The trial will be non stop. At some point during this stage an Acceleration and Brake test will be ridden. c. Stage 3. Sunday am. Riders visit the Observed Sections but ride through the Section start gates only, a number of laps are to be completed making this a closed circuit Enduro-type Stage. A special cross country test will be ridden a number of times. d. Routes. In stages 1 and 2 multi-route sections allowing for different routes for the Novice and Expert riders may be used. Furthermore differing time allowances and numbers of laps may also be used for Stage 3. The intent is to make the event demanding for both Novice and Expert riders alike. e. Ties. The Acceleration and Brake test score will be used to decide a tie. If a tie still exists then Trials regulations will apply (number of cleans, etc). Prize Giving 19. Prize giving will be at approximately 1500 hrs on 13 th Oct 13. All competitors are required to attend. Dress is clean MTP, CB95 or equivalent for serving military personnel. Penalties, Exclusions

6 20. The event will be run in accordance with the regulations contained in Reference A. They can be summarised as: a. Start. Failing to start the machine by the starting device fitted and ride over a line 20m forward of the start line - 5 points. b. Observed Sections. Missed sections - 10 points, Failure - 5 points (ceasing forward motion, riding outside or breaking the tape), Footing once - one point, Footing twice - 2 points, Footing more than twice - 3 points. c. Graded Hill. 0 to 10 points based on distance. d. Acceleration and Brake Test. 1 point per second. e. Enduro. Failing to finish within the time allowance - one point per minute up to a maximum of 60 points. f. Special Cross Country Test. The fastest rider will set the bogie time and record a score of zero. Thereafter 1 point per second will be awarded. 21. If a competitor is excluded from the competition he/she will take no further part. The following exclusions will be in force: Awards a. Refuelling outside of the nominated refuelling area. b. Speeding in the working area/camp area or when not riding the course. c. Riding against the direction of the circuit. d. Cheating and course cutting. e. Tyre changing in order to gain advantage f. Riding without a crash helmet in the parking/pits area g. Ineffective silencer noisy machine h. Any other rule infringement deemed serious by the organisers. 22. It is proposed that the following will be contested (subject to confirmation and the number of entries): a. Individual Awards. (1) Norton Trophy - Best Individual (hard route) (2) Motorcycle Industries Trophy - 2 nd Overall (hard route) (3) Silver Cup - 3 rd Overall (hard route)

7 (4) Motorcycle Industries Trophy - Best Novice Rider (easy route) 2 nd and 3 rd Novice riders (easy route) (5) John Clover Cup - Best RLC Novice (easy route) (6) Holden Trophy - Best Reserve Forces Rider (7) Soldier Magazine Shield - Best Army Private Soldier (8) Pascoe Trophy Best Special Test time (9) Noy Trophy - Best Special test time by a Novice (10) RLC Cup - Best RLC Rider (hard route) (11) REME Cup - Best REME Rider (hard route) (12) Turner Trophy - Best RE Rider (hard route) (13) Gwinnell Memorial Trophy Best AAC Rider (hard route, subject to entries) (14) Mills Trophy - Best Trials Rider (hard route) 2 nd and 3 rd Trials riders allocated subject to entries (15) Three First Class Awards (hard route) (16) Three Second Class Awards (hard route) (17) Paul Grace Trophy - Spirit of Event Award Note: No rider may win more than one major award. Trophies will be allocated to the next best placed rider. b. Team Awards. Teams are to comprise two riders on the posted strength of the same Unit. Entries must be submitted on the attached entry form which should be completed in full (including the training camp box) and sent, along with the correct remittance, to the secretary of the meeting. The following entry fees apply; Cheques are to be made payable to SEME Central Bank a. Serving members of the Army BAMA members 5 per rider, non BAMA members 15 per rider, plus 10 for each Team. Note: BAMA membership is 10 per year, thus current BAMA members pay a discounted rate. Non BAMA members will pay the full rate, of which 10 represents the annual BAMA membership. They are to complete the attached application form and sent to the Secretary with the event entry form. BAMA membership cards will be issued by the BAMA membership secretary at a later date. b. Veterans and Guests, 35 per rider. 25. Entries open on 1 st Aug 13 and close on 1 st Oct 13. Late entries will be accepted by prior arrangement from the Secretary. Entries on the day cannot be accepted.

9 Final Instructions 26. Final instructions will confirm riding numbers, start times, and other administration details, and will be issued by shortly before the event. Competitors are to ensure their address is on the entry form.
