2 Letter from an Advisor of Florida Gamma: Dear Initiate, I offer you my most sincere congratulations! By now you are aware, if you were not before, that your scholastic achievement has placed you in a position of high honor. Tau Beta Pi was started 125 years ago, in 1885, to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character. You are now being offered the opportunity to become a member of our prominent chapter of Tau Beta Pi, Florida Gamma. Thank you for your hard work and dedication, two things which all engineers should know well and benefit from. Indeed, without people like you, our profession would be unsatisfying, and we would have no need for such societies. Throughout the centuries humans have applied science to better the quality of life for all mankind. With this great ability to manipulate our environment comes much responsibility. This responsibility requires us to be people of exemplary character, a trait of which is essential to our society. I ask that you not end your effort with mere academic achievement. Distinguish yourself not only as a scholar but also as an exceptional individual by becoming a member. Members of Tau Beta Pi span the country and are known throughout the world for their achievements. 3 Purpose of Initiation Process: The Initiation Process was developed so Tau Beta Pi chapters would have a more effective way to judge the character of potential new members. This process allows chapters to function more efficiently and incorporates training of incoming leaders while performing the tasks each chapter must accomplish for the National organization each semester. At the end of the process and initiation the members will be more competent and ensure the chapter functions will continue after the current members have graduated and are no longer present within the local chapter. Personal Requirements: Tau Beta Pi strives to initiate the new leaders of tomorrow who are competent in both their academic lives as well as their social lives. That is why we require that all new initiates attend at least 5 Tau Beta Pi events throughout the semester in order to be considered for initiation. One of each event type must be completed as well as 2 more events from any category. Professional Event Engineering Futures, Conference, Guest speakers, Business Tours, etc. Community Service Event Habitat for Humanity, Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, Paint Your Heart Out Tampa Social Event BBQ, Mixers, Movie nights, Game nights We provide plenty of opportunities to complete these events throughout the semester but if by some chance the dates don t work out in your favor you can create an event of your own but we ask that you have at least 4 TBP members in attendance and a project report is created. 5 An Initiate Quiz will be given. If you can not make the meeting contact to make alternate arrangements. Two Catalog Cards, filled out by each initiate, in pen, will be collected at the second meeting (Also a requirement of Nationals). Engineering Futures: The Engineering Futures Program was established to provide interpersonal skills for engineering students. Fortune 500 companies pay thousands of dollars (~$30,000/person) to send their employees to similar workshops. As a Tau Beta Pi initiate, you get to experience it for FREE and get recognition via certificate of completion! Please keep in mind you may invite as many other students as you wish to the Futures session, even if they are not an engineering major. The skills gained throughout the course of a session can prove extremely beneficial no matter what curriculum you study. Initiate Group Project Reports: For group social, service, and professional projects (4 or more TBP members), a Project Report must be completed. A template for how we would like the reports to be completed is provided on our chapter s website. These need to be completed as early as possible after the event is completed, and sent to the Corresponding Secretary. These project reports are compiled annually into a large document, sent to nationals to determine the success of our chapter. Our chapter is always striving to be awarded the R.C. Matthews Best Chapter Award. This is the most prestigious award, given to one chapter annually. It wasn t long ago our chapter was number one, and there s no reason we won t be again next year! Try to make your reports sound impressive and ask for assistance if you need it! Documentation is necessary for every event. The best form is a photograph. Fliers are acceptable if you can t get a good photo, but not preferred. Initiates will be required to participate in events throughout the semester. Many of these will be planned in advance by the chapter officers but, it is completely acceptable for initiates to instigate events. We are the chapter founded in the state of Florida, which is represented by the Greek letter in our chapter name. Our chapter has won the R.C. Matthews Most Outstanding Chapter Award. (True/False) If True what year(s) did we win it? What is the universal symbol of Tau Beta Pi? In order to be eligible for membership (undergraduate) in Tau Beta Pi you must be in the top of the Senior class or the top Junior class. Be able to list the officers and their positions.
