1 Learning Targets are used as a baseline for our learning in the areas of Reading, Writing, and Math. These are the ESSENTIAL skills that all first graders must be able to do by the end of each quarter. We will be enriching our teaching and going beyond these baselines.
2 Reading I can ask and answer questions about details in a text. I can retell stories and understand the message. I can describe characters, settings, and events in a story. I can read writings and poetry on the first grade level. I can ask and answer questions about details in a text. I can make single-syllable words by blending sounds. I can separate and say the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in spoken words. I can break apart single syllable words into their individual sounds. I can decode one-syllable words. I can read first grade level text with purpose and understanding. I can use pictures and details to describe characters, settings, and events. I can identify the main topic and retell important parts of a text. I can understand and use text features. I can tell the difference between information given by pictures and information given in the text. I can use illustrations and details to describe key ideas. I can recognize the features of a sentence. I can tell the difference between long and short vowel sounds in one syllable spoken words.
3 I can read words with inflectional endings (s, es, ing) I can read first grade text correctly with expression. I can use words in a text to check, correct, and understand my reading. I can explain the differences between books that tell stories and books that tell information. I can identify who is telling the story in a text. I can tell how the experiences and adventures of characters in stories are alike and different. I can ask and answer questions to find the meanings of words that I do not know in a text. I can find the things that are alike and different in two texts on the same topic. I can read informational text at a first grade level. I know the sounds for two letters that make up one sound. I know the silent e and long vowel spelling rules. I can use the knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel and this helps me find syllables. I can decode two syllable words by breaking them into syllables. I can recognize and read first grade irregularly spelled words. I can identify words and phrases in a story that show senses or feelings. I can tell how people, happenings, information or ideas are connected in a text. I can find the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
4 Writing I can print letters correctly. I can use invented spelling. I can use correct spelling for known word wall words. I can draw pictures to match my writing. I can write one sentence. I can use correct punctuation and capitalization. I know when to use a period or question mark. I leave spaces between words and sentences. I can choose a topic. I can write two part sentences using nouns and verbs. I can write three sentences when journaling. I can retell a personal experience. I can write a story with two or more events using words that tell order and have closure. I can focus on a topic, respond to questions, and add details to strengthen my writing. I can be part of a group research and writing project. I can write about a topic or book, give you my opinion, reason for it, and give a sense of closure. I can write informational text by naming a topic, giving facts and closure. I can use technology to make and publish my writing, including working with my classmates. I can remember experiences and collect information from sources to answer a question.
5 Math I can read, write and order numbers to 35. I can tell if a number is greater than, less than or equal to another number. I can show number partners up to 10. I can use manipulatives to solve a problem. I can make a pattern. I can tell the rule for a pattern. I can use drawings to solve a problem. I can read, write and order numbers to 60. I can draw a math mountain to solve a problem. I can write a number sentence to go with a problem. I can count by 2 s, 5 s, and 10 s. I can find the missing partner in a number sentence. I can tell if a number sentence matches a story problem. I can write a number sentence to go with a story problem. I can tell how many tens and ones are in a number. I can read, write and order numbers to 100. I can add 10 to a number. I can subtract 10 from a number. I can use make a ten strategy for adding and subtracting. I can read, write and order numbers to 120. I can count to 120 and count back from 120. I can make and read graphs and tally charts. I can show number partners up to 12. I can describe these shapes: square, triangle, rectangle, circle, cone, cylinder, rectangular prism, and sphere, using words like faces, sides, corners, and vertices. I can put shapes together to make different shapes. I can take shapes apart to find other shapes.
